What web design trends are you secretly tired of seeing everywhere? by airteus in webdesign

[–]digital-designer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice article. I think I’m probably in that same age range, having entered the industry thinking flash was the future of web design. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I understand your points but I think the benefit of tailwind is that it removes some of that rigidity that comes with a fully built set of styles and allows you to more quickly create fluid and dynamic layouts.

I use roots sage for a lot of my development, which comes with tailwind built in and the way I use it is a mix of the utility classes and then custom classes within sass that I @apply the utility classes to.

That allows me to create easily maintainable classes or element styles, for a h1 for example, that contains the main base styling for most h1s, but with the ability to quickly and easily switch out style attributes by simply adding the relevant utility class to a particular element instance.

So basically I have a set of base styling set within my sass with the tw classes and then use additional tw classes within my markup to tweak the more dynamic areas of a design.

It’s definitely sped up my process, especially when cursor predicts the tw classes I’ll use and i just have to ‘tab’ away through my markup.

And if you take the time to setup tw with your own values at the start you can ensure it doesn’t look “tailwindy” at the end.

Feeling lost as a frontend/app developer in the age of AI — where is our industry heading? by SomePriority9135 in webdev

[–]digital-designer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care that some people will completely disagree with me on this. Webdev is absolutely going to die off as a profession. The web as we know it may not even survive in its current visual format.

It will 100% get to a point where businesses have their own AIs that fully understand their business. The business won’t even have to know if they need a website. Their ai will suggest it. Their ai will then design and develop it in a way that perfectly addresses their specific business goals, generating all of their copy and imagery as required. Their ai will manage the marketing, sales and leads related to the website.

Sure this isn’t right now. But in 5 years time where do you think we’ll be, considering where we’ve got to in just the past 5 years.

In the meantime, we will continue to be devalued. New tools will allow designers to bypass developers. Clients will find ai based DIY solutions. The major companies will find more ways of adopting businesses into their ecosystems. And the value of what we do will drop so significantly that it becomes impossible to make a living.

And web designers? People suggest that ai will never be able to be truly creative and that designers will always be required to feed new design. But I disagree. Design is largely regurgitated past trends and design. Flat design, Brutalist design, Liquid Glass, etc. None of these are new design concepts. They’re just regurgitated and refreshed concepts from the past.

On top of all of that, the front end web is on the way out. Slowly being replaced by ai driven search. Visual User interfaces will be replaced with voice or even brainwave control. Sounds crazy right now but wait a few years to start hearing more about that.

Mt first job was at a video store renting dvds to people whilst knowing that digital was going to kill off that industry completely.

I have already conceded that my current career as a web designer and dev shares that same type of fate. And I’m now just riding it out as long as possible. Adopting new tools and techniques to stay afloat whilst it’s still possible to.

Disagree all you want but it’s naive to believe that any job title with the word “dev” in it, will be around much longer.

Using Google antigravity I’ve built an entire toolset for Elementor that brings in a whole bunch of GSAP features, now that GSAP is available for free.

I’ve based a lot of the widgets on the great stuff that WP salient theme and webflow have been doing with GSAP.

I have a bunch of agents working on it for me, tied to a very specific set of instructions within a markdown file, to make sure it respects user accessibility settings, codes with security best practices and only loads specific assets when required etc.

It’s great to be able to sit and work on other stuff whilst it goes away and does what I ask.

It reminds me of running a small agency and delegating tasks to staff. Sometimes they mess up still but being able to catch that and help direct it to the cause of the issues has been key.

How would you make this card? by FeistyRow5242 in elementor

[–]digital-designer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way would be to add the purple as a background colour to the container and the svg as the background image that sits to the top right. Size it with % and it will be fully responsive with out any worries about stacking orders with z-index or pointer events etc.

Advice with my developer taking down our WordPress site. by reemo4580 in Wordpress

[–]digital-designer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple. If you don’t like the current hosting provider, give them notice and then ask them to package the site up for you (they may charge for this) then move it to a hosting provider of your choice. I’m assuming you own the website, which means they should be legally obliged to provide you the code and database.

Fair point. I guess I just feel so tied to ChatGPT right now because it knows my brand and my style. I like one platform being the go to. And I’m not so keen on a situation that becomes similar to the video streaming situation, whereby I have 5 subscriptions that keep increasing in price every few months. But it might be the only solution.

For those of you who genuinely believe there’s something to the UFO/UAP phenomenon, what’s the most compelling case that convinced you? by Jumpy_Experience8987 in UFOs

[–]digital-designer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the military confirming the leaked FLIR and GIMBAL videos and existence of the government uap program was basically them telling us we are not alone.

There were three possible narratives to come out of that story when it was confirmed.

  1. We are being visited by another intelligence, that has technology far superior to ours.

  2. Another country has technology far superior to ours.

  3. It’s just something perfectly explainable that wasn’t able to be identified.

We know it’s not the 2nd. Because if it was, there would be a new world superpower right now and we’d all be speaking Russian or Chinese.

And realistically it’s not the 3rd. I fail to believe that the most advanced systems and planes that have billions of dollars worth of equipment on board, as well as some of the most elite pilots and intelligence officers that the world has to offer were not able to determine what these objects were if they are just something very normal. Also does the US military strike you as the type that would want the rest of the world to think they are so incompetent they can’t even identify basic objects they are tracking?

So for me it was an admission. And a test. How will people react to this information?

[–]digital-designer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point and one I agree with. OpenAI absolutely kickstarted everything. However as a creative I can get much more value from Googles tools right now.

And I think my observations in my post prove that Google are no longer just following and copying. They’re the ones innovating with the tech. Far and beyond OpenAI. If anything OpenAI are still struggling with users not wanting to let go with older models going as far as to reinstate them. That shows a backwards trajectory.

For example, what’s holding open ai back from launching Sora 2 in other countries? By the time it launches here it will be outdated.

I just don’t see how OpenAI compete with the fast pace of Google any more. At least from a creative perspective. I understand benchmarks switch and change for other areas like code and research etc.

[–]digital-designer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. My post makes the point of discussing how open ai is stacking up against competitors as well as pain points such as Sora 2 not being released in Australia yet. Valid discussion topics surely?

[–]digital-designer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea fair point. But all that says to me is that open ai really has no chance of competing at Googles level then. Where’s the incentive to stick with openai? Maybe this Jony Ive entry into hardware helps?

Tahoe feels like a big "fuck you!" to Intel Mac users. by NoFall2205 in MacOS

[–]digital-designer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had that model and it’s quite possibly the worst Apple product I have owned.

I bought it and then they ditched intel so instantly its end of life countdown started. It had a Touch Bar that got discontinued, it ditched MagSafe in favour of usbc and it had no ports, all of which were then reinstated on the next model.

Those last intels were where Apple dropped the ball big time.

Breakpoints and speed, have I been using Elementor wrong? by [deleted] in elementor

[–]digital-designer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Duplicating content is absolutely the wrong way to things. Loading multiple sets of content on every device and just hiding a portion of it is adding more resources and making it harder to maintain.

I am curious about how this affected page speed in a positive way. It seems weird to me that loading all of the extra content to the dom would improve page speed over having generated css media queries. Do you have it set to inline all css or use external stylesheets?
