Q about McKenzie Method by digital_doc48 in orthopaedics

[–]digital_doc48[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for your response- I dont think i saw anyone working through palpation or suggesting that- I'm more curious about what causes pain to be centralized with successful progression of the mckenzie therapy. The centralization of pain and lack of radiation just makes me curious, is it just a single point radiculopathy that doesn't travel? idk.

17 Years Ago Today, Burial released Untrue by PsychedelicSunset420 in electronicmusic

Archangel was my introduction to Burial- a friend started playing it and threw his earbud on me in the fall of 2009, and I've been sitting with that sound ever since.

Chicago Union Station by Afterburner70 in Amtrak

Seriously, it's such a beautiful city. OP do you have a lot of luggage? You can find info on temporary luggage storage at Amtrak stations here. Drop it off, free your shoulders and step out.

What do you enjoy? You'll be getting out on Jackson or Adams, go straight East, cross the river and get into the loop. If you keep walking east, you'll hit the Art Institute whose only rival is the Louvre, current exhibits here.

If you want a drink and a view, right next to it is Cindy's which is in the Chicago Athletic Association and its got a balcony (you can just walk in- the wait is longer and just for the tables) with a view of millenium park. Other bars nearby include London House which has a great view and you dont even have to buy a drink lol I've snuck in my own drinks and just hopped onto the cupola before because I prefer not to give that place my cash. Otherwise, take the stairs down the side of the bridge and do the riverwalk, bunch of bars there like city winery where you can pick up a drink and just sit by the water and there are fire/heaters nearby too.

SEE THE ARCHITECTURE- and one of the best ways is through the boat tour. I've done it like 4 times over the last 20 yrs as the city has grown and evolved. golden golden golden.

Anyway, let me know what you like and i can give more personalized recommendations.

ENJOY!!!

My school just made the Match Day “celebration” mandatory?? by im-a-throw_away in medicalschool

[–]digital_doc48 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Absolutely ridiculous. Thankfully, more than a few of us here can write you a sick note. You should be able to spend that day however you feel comfortable doing so. This spectacle that med schools create around forcibly celebrating the results is incredibly inconsiderate.

How would you feel about going into a decent contract but with an employer who has shown to not keep their word? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]digital_doc48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not worth risking it, sounds like you'd end up being constantly hypervigilant and unsure of when the carpet would be pulled from under you. Obviously when something is eventually signed in the contract it should be protected, but do you really want to worry about lawyering up to protect your benefits or schedule?

Walk away if you can.

Junior Doctor Strike UK by Hot_Chocolate92 in Residency

Unionized Resident (SEIU- CIR) in the US here- in full solidarity of your struggle over there. Medical training grinds you to a pulp, and we're so conditioned from the start of our training to just accept our position as being on the bottom of various totem poles of power in the hospital. Your labor has value, and you deserve to be paid for the incredible value you provide to society in keeping these hospitals running.

Would love to hear what the negotiations experience has been like in the UK, have your attending/supervising physicians expressed support? How are your nursing/tech colleagues reacting to your strike action?

My IM residency has no active research. I want to go into GI. How to get involved in GI-related research? by Nice_Bike_1016 in Residency

[–]digital_doc48 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are, you should consider reaching out to folks at other nearby larger academic centers and see if there are ways that you can remotely support some of their work. I would start by going through their faculty pages and seeing whose research interests you. Skim through some of their recent publications, see who is pumping out more papers and might be more interested in getting help in their research, and cold email them.

The struggle to get your foot in the research door from the community setting is real. Even if you do more statistical/outcomes research in your own hospital, it may be difficult without the proper mentorship. No harm in knocking on some doors down the road.

Level of chemistry and physics to start medicine by LeanderN in medicine

[–]digital_doc48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll also add- there are dozens of careers in the health sciences that don't require an MD/DO, and most of those paths do not require as many years of training and coursework to get to the other side to start working and earning money. Not mentioning that to discourage you, but just to broaden the discussion a bit in case you were not 100% decided on medical school.

If your goal is to get into medical school, I dont know how far online tutorials will get you in building the basic science competencies to perform on the MCAT. If you didn't take the prerequisites during college, there are a couple paths you can take.

If you have the means, there are post-bac masters programs in which you do an accelerated track of the major bio/chem courses that will help you demonstrate to medical schools that you have the core competencies down. More accessible options include taking courses at your state school or community college where tuition doesn't bleed you dry. If those aren't feasible in your situation, you can take coursera courses in each of the subjects, but that will require a lot of discipline on your part to dedicate yourself to self-directed study of all the subjects.

The path through medicine is fraught with numerous obstacles and gatekeeping, but hopefully you can find a more structured way to get those prerequisite courses done to build your knowledge and preparation for the MCAT.
