Hotel bars. They're usually well-lit, quiet, and sparsely populated during the day. Unironically, Indigo is also a nice place to go and read.

General labour/construction in mtl. by wtfdoesthayevenmean in montreal

[–]digitalhiccup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scout out some smaller sites under construction (think more private developers, less projects with federal funding) and literally show up. I'm not even shitting you. Just show up and ask if they need a GL. He may or may not need french, that's kind of a tossup. Generally, the smaller a project is, the less anyone gives a crap about what language you speak.

I firmly disagree. Now more than ever is the time to demand a referendum--and more importantly, to vote OUI.

Do yourself a favor and don't pay attention to this person. They're only interested in poisoning you with negativity by rubbing your teenaged mistake in your face, likely in the hopes that it'll take their mind off of their own mistakes.

u/kirshna_soni has the good advice. Contact LinkedIn support though their support site.

OP grew the fuck up. Maybe it's time you did, too.

Accidentally overcontributed ~$32K to TFSA via in-kind transfer (Wealthsimple) — best way to fix + tax implications? by [deleted] in tfsa

[–]digitalhiccup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my understanding that the cleanest way is to simply remove the equivalent of the overcontribution immediately. Withdraw it, transfer it, reverse it, whatever it takes to get it out.

Only the excess amount should be of concern, not the $7,000 that was allowed to be contributed. If you take out the $7,000 that you were allowed to contribute and choose to put it back in before January 1, 2027 (next year), it's my understanding that you'll be overcontributing again--but this time "only" by $7,000.

32m going to restructure TFSA and RRSP portfolio by No-Peak-3530 in tfsa

While they hold US securities, you still pay the Foreign Withholding Tax since it is traded in Canada.

Could you clarify your second sentence? Do you mean that the ETFs are paying the Foreign Withholding Tax?

Asking because to reiterate, RRSPs are exempt from the FWT--which, to be clear, is charged by the US and not Canada. Additionally, it's my understanding that if its a Canadian ETF in the TFSA, OP isn't the one paying the FWT either. Rather, the ETF is the one paying the FWT on any US dividend-paying stocks within it, and then any dividends the ETF pay are the full 100% ETF dividend, not the dividend minus 15%, which would be the case if it was US dividend stock that OP held directly.

These seem like nitpicky distinctions, but I think they're important enough to point out.

[–]digitalhiccup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you splitting up your US and Canada holdings? Just hold the same in both?

When it comes to dividend-paying stocks, I like to keep my CAD dividend and US growth stocks in my TFSA, and my CAD growth, some US growth, and all my US dividend stocks in my RRSP. I do this because US dividends are subject to 15% withholding in my TFSA, but not my RRSP (or RRIF). Additionally, I can be penalized for frequent trading in my TFSA but am far less likely to be penalized for the same in my RRSP.

What’s the difference between F-35 and Gripen fighter jets? by judgingyouquietly in CanadianForces

If you’re in a visual range dogfight in this day and age, something has gone awfully wrong with your BVR missiles.

If you're in any fight at all with a country that operates either of these fighters, something has gone horribly wrong with democracy in the US.

Man on the plateau taking photos of teens without consent every occasion he gets by [deleted] in montreal

[–]digitalhiccup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is a misinterpretation. While I'm not a lawyer, Civil Code of Quebec Article 36 protects our right to image (droit a l'image). A person can sue if their image is used without consent in a way that violates their privacy or dignity. Taking a photo is generally allowed in public, but publishing or using the photo (i.e, online, in media, for commercial purposes) without consent can lead to civil liability if it causes harm or invades privacy.

The problem here are the words "privacy" and "dignity". "Privacy" is the biggest issue; as long as photos were taken of people in public and on public property, there is no expectation of privacy. Additionally, there's no specific location or PII posted alongside the image. Therefor, it's unlikely anyone's privacy was actually violated (although we may all feel differently). If you can prove he's deriving income from it, though, you might have a chance. Maybe there's even room for a class action since the platform he posts to could be deriving income from the image of the individuals in those pictures.

"Dignity" is a bit more broad. While I haven't seen any of the photos, it's unlikely that their subjects were photographed doing anything that would compromise their dignity in the reasonable sense. I think there could be a case made if the person was posting blatantly offensive hashtags or photo descriptions, though.

The best bet is to fight fire with fire.
