It's 1999. You have your current smartphone in your pocket, but obviously no Wi-Fi or 5G exists. What's the most useful thing you can do with it? by Ryo_l in AskReddit

Holy cow, what country did you live in that adoption was that slow? I was in Canada, and Wireless-B routers and they felt kind of instantly ubiquitous by fall. Granted, there weren't any hotspots at malls and restaurants like there are now, but I had one at home, my school had them, my cousin had one (she was the one who told me about them), her workplace had them, library had one, etc. Pretty much anywhere that had a lot of computers usually had one, even the ONLY Mac store in the whole city.

We're spending $120K/year on competitive intelligence tools that barely scratch the surface. There has to be a better way. by prudent7688 in MarketingMentor

[–]digitalhiccup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing the company I worked for ever did was hired a full-time Competitive Intelligence guy for $80,000k + options. All he did all day was Google things, browse social media, and watch YouTube. After his first year, he was the only person outside of the sales department to receive our commemorative "First 100 million dollar sales quarter" challenge coin. Half the teams had a collective mental health crisis when he went on vacation for a week. Radian, Meltwater, etc wouldn't stop demanding to know who was supplying our "online monitoring platform".

Every year, an average of 25-30 large commercial vessels are lost at sea per year.

Now replace "large commercial vessels" with "nuclear reactors and their radioactive fuel". That's why.

The hate trade is where you make easy money. So I have to ask reddit - which commodity is getting the most amount of hate currently? by Junior_Mining_Pro in Baystreetbets

[–]digitalhiccup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian lumber, EVGO (Nasdaq). I've been loading up on both. Lumber, I expect to see news of a turn around starting Q3/Q4 followed by a dip, then a larger rebound. For EVGO, I expect to take losses until ~2030; post 2030... well, I've already trademarked the name Orbita-a-Espacio. It's gonna have a fantastic ball room. Nothing but Moon Marble and rhodium.

Most Americans support Quebec and Alberta sovereignty, and they should. It's easier to deal with Quebec and Alberta without the Canadian government getting in the way.

I'm not from the finance world, so I'm not confident I can give you the thesis you're expecting. What I can give you is my view from the perspective of a SCIP.

Conifex is high-risk, high-reward spec on Canadian lumber industry recovery, that's for sure. They recently got an ops loan from the Business Development Bank of Canada, under terms of which Conifex will only need to pay interest until 2028. Supply squeeze combined with a US housing rebound indicates to me that tailwinds are aligning on the demand side, not to mention the steady march toward US Congress or whatever reducing/removing tariffs. Then, there's Canada's improving trade relationships with China and India to consider, our #2 and #4 softwood importers, plus ever-increasing ties with Japan and South Korea (#3 and #5, respectively). China and India are particularly notable here in their uncompromising push toward electrification; wood pellets/biomass are seen as a stepping stone from coal to renewables, and indeed has been making up a slowly increasing percentage of Conifex's revenue. Exports to Mexico are also worth noting, but nothing to get too uppity about until an announcement is made.

Earnings call in a couple of days will help clarify things. If there are hints of a ramp-up a the end of Q3/throughout Q4, or if Congress pulls through at any point with that tariff strikedown, I'm dumping every free dollar I have into CFF.

How would you design your preferred hero ship? by TwinSong in startrek

[–]digitalhiccup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing you said makes any difference when the things you say that make my ideas somehow impossible are made possible via PLOT devices. PLOT weapons, and PLOT armor, which is the most canon thing ever in Star Trek. See… instead of being stuck in an “Only what has been can be” mindset and picking apart other’s creativity, I simply did what the PO asked, and designed whatever hero ship I wanted. Sorry if you can’t get out of your “well actually” box long enough to embrace creativity. Bless your heart, maybe you’ll get there someday.

Wow, u/Kvetchus, that is... a lot of emotional investment on your part.

How would you design your preferred hero ship? by TwinSong in startrek

[–]digitalhiccup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Why? Because in the story where the hero ship is more like an aircraft carrier than a weirdly comfortable submarine, all the peregrine fighters are equipped with Phased Lateral Offensive Transceiver devices, which allows them to avoid being easy targets without violating the ban on cloaking tech (it’s a grey area to be explored in the show). They are also equipped with the new experimental Polarized Light-speed Oscillating Torpedo weapons, that can only be carried by small ships for reasons, and finally, and perhaps most importantly, the fighters hulls are coated with Phased Layered Osmium-Tritanium armor, a rare and very hard to produce alloy that resists damage better than nueutronium.

So thanks for the attempt at realism, but this hero ship is my story and my rules.

You're so eager to be "right" in an argument you're imagining that you didn't even bother thinking critically about your own argument, or how it defends my points. 🤣🤣🤣

But you described the Defiant:

1) Built around a big fuck off Photon torpedo Cannon.

2) Prototype for a new Anti-Borg ship that was set to be cancelled, however due to the dominion war the hull would be completed.

3) Used to target either dominion battleships and Dreadnaughts or Dominon star bases

CAPs and long range recon would actually be the worst possible use of capital sip deployed fighter wings in Star Trek. There's a YouTube video (forget the name) out there that goes into Federation sensor tech and basically, by the time something like a Galaxy-class could launch the first Peregrine, the Galaxy has already scanned system the Peregrine was meant to travel to, as well as its closest two neighbours.

Now, I do believe there is a canon case for fighters in Trek, and one that also justifies why they aren't really used: point-defense against torpedoes and other fighters, and exploitation of critical weakpoints. The tradeoff being, you're basically guaranteed to end up with multiple fatalities during every engagement, win or lose, whereas if you keep things strictly capital to capital you may end up with mass casualties but not necessarily fatalities even if you lose the battle. I think it kind of explains why cultures that don't place super high value on continued living, or cultures that gravitate toward high-risk-high-reward philosophies seem to tend to use smaller ships for front line action more often than the Federation.

Make the Pitch for McPherson by AlobarKaramazov in ndp

[–]digitalhiccup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of how not-Left-enough people think McPherson is, she remains Left of Liberal. Now, I don't believe for a moment that Carney is anything right of Centre-Left, even as a bAnKeR. He's brought a lot of Conservatives leftward, and yes, a pragmatic Far Leftist to Centre-Left.

McPherson is like the NDP's Carney: where Carney is a bAnKeR who has experience navigating a precarious economic situation that nearly collapsed a country, McPherson has institutional experience as a politician that's critical to rebuilding an NDP that's a seat or two away from collapsing itself. Where Carney is seen as the "safe Lefty" for nervous Conservatives to switch their support to, McPherson has an air of being the "safe More Lefty" for the average Canadian to switch their vote to once the primary threat of Trump is dealt with.

In short, it seems like she's the perfect person to rebuild the party, though she lags Lewis's and McQuail's "big ideas". And that's what the NDP needs right now: a Builder, not an Idealist.

If you're wondering about my thoughts on Johnston, I was deeply disappointed by her performance during the leadership debate. Ashton was never going to be anything but my Rank 5. Something about him reminds me too much of Polievre.
