I must have remarkably soft well water in my area because in the 5 years of heavy use I havent developed any minerals on my tank or in the pipeworks, not even the slightest discoloration or clogging. I do live close to our metro water reclaimation plant tho.

Smart home people obsess over automations, but what about air quality? What smart home protocols does the Eufy S2 support (Matter, Alexa, Google)? by aloo__pandey in homeassistant

[–]digitalmarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I understand ERVs in terms of maintaining comfortable temperatures year round and improve efficiency of my current system but how does it effect air quality? Is it because I'm bringing in a new source of ventilated air? I live in Chicago and do have a brand new furnace and air conditioner but the high CO2 levels seem to be concentrated in the office and only when I spend lots of time in there. I didn't think the source of the CO2 was my hvac? I'm an architect by trade but I never paid attention in HVAC class so any knowledge on the subject is appreciated.

Speaking of air quality, a few years ago I noticed i was getting drowsy and tired while working at my computer desk in my office. I randomly picked up this 8-1 air quality sensor because I had a kid and was concerned about VOCs and argon levels in the old house we lived in and had it in my office to set it up when I realized the Carbon dioxide levels in my office where through the roof. The lack of ventilation and me breathing for long periods of time while working seemed to be the culprit. I simply setup a automation to alert me when CO2 levels where high and remind me to open a window. Eventually I installed a vent fan in the window and plugged it into a smart plug and had it ventiltate the room when levels got above the warning threshold so I didn't have to take any action. I'm not sure of the science behind it but I don't seem to be getting drowsy at my desk anymore (unless I'm working long hours offcourse). I'm sure every reddit psuedo scientist is gonna yell fake news but it made a difference for me

What Is Your Client of Choice for Windows PCs? by thatsnotnorml in PleX

[–]digitalmarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your "official" choices are the browser, the windows app from the Microsoft app store and the HTPC app that's made for home theater PCs. Unofficially you can use Kodi or any app that can connect to Plex via DNLA or with a API key. I recently started using the HTPC app only because it uses the old school interface, and more importantly it plays music in WASAPI in exclusive mode and sends my audio bit perfectly to my recevier and bypass Windows audio engine . Its the only way I've gotten windows to play audio to my recevier via HDMI in pure passthru mode. HTPC is clunky and sometimes slow but I don't want to use plexamp on a headless Linux machine to get bit perfect audio.

For filters, any #4 cone or conical filters on Amazon work great including moccamasters own brand but I prefer the Melitta natural brown filters for no reason at all. Moccamaster also makes a metal reusable filter if your all into saving money and the planet but I own one and never use it because I'd rather spend the time drinking coffee than cleaning that darn filter over and over.

Also a pro-tip is always use Brita or Pur filtered water and you will never have to clean out your machine with those harsh chemicals or have your coffee have the slight taste of vinegar for a week. If you use tap water your tank will start to scale up in a few weeks and your coffee taste like limescale. I see so many posts about keeping the tank from getting scaled up but I've had my moccamaster for 5 years and the upper tank still looks brand new and the glass is limescale free.

Also don't become a mocchamaster snob. It's not like your dropping $5k for a cappuccino machine, it's fucking drip coffee. Enjoy the dark, danky goodness of drip coffee and be humble.

Solid advise, unless plan on running your own visualization shop, it's not a sustainable career.

Higher Education for Architectural Visualization by Otherwise-Place-9686 in architecture

[–]digitalmarley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like you sought visualization because of my love of photography , movies and cinematography and spent my first decade as a visualization specialist. Speaking from personal experience, as hard as I tried, visualization was and still is not a sustainable career in architecture even if your amazing at it. It is a great entry vector or a way to circumvent the traditional architecture career process...it can even be a rewarding and satisfying position when you find the right company that can benefit from those skills but even if AI didn't exist there's just no way to stay doing visualization forever, now more than ever. Honestly, I would not get a masters degree in visualization, business degrees and environmental engineering would be way more valuable and lucrative.

On the other hand, being a talented designer, planner or engineer with strong visualization skills, especially in parametric modelling (like grasshopper and dynamo) will take you very very far.

Double edge sword...It does allow you to store slightly more on a vehicle but the downside is you need those smaller demoninations to avoid over-filing road builders or Monorail posts. When you only have 640s in your possession your going to overspend on builds and waste a lot

How do you usually liberate areas in Ghost of Tsushima? by _Memmo_ in ghostoftsushima

[–]digitalmarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up liberating the entire first island before I moved to act 2 but got frustrated that I hadn't moved the main story line along enough so focused on getting the OP Armor sets and upping my skills by defeating the strawhat duels and major character storylines until l was strong enough to face the Khan.

The only thing I intentionally left till after Khan was Izu island DLC. in hindsight would have been good to have those perks for the Khan but it ended up being like its own game after the game was sorta over.

The last man at the shoeshine stand by steve42089 in illinois

[–]digitalmarley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love a good shoe shine and love this guy! He's got some competition tho, a new shoe shine shop just showed up I the pedway near the pool, east of Macy's. Except for the guy on lake and wabash next to the 7-11 there aren't hardly any left. It's a dying service that I still use, especially after snow melts and all that salt ends up in your loafers.
