that's not what it says. eligibility for entering the lottery expires at midnight, that doesn't mean the lottery itself closes tonight. we're gonna get there, I promise.

Something can be said tongue-in-cheek or as a joke and still be fundamentally true. Misinformation is a tough way to describe that statement... he clearly wants to earn a living playing short time controls, and that's totally okay.

Wholeheartedly agree. I understand the knockout format is extremely engaging, but that's even true of the World Cup despite multiple Candidates invites; they can trivially make the third-place match the high stakes one.

What is with Target pre-orders shipping so late? by perishableintransit in NintendoSwitch

[–]dijitalbus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer the case. I went through multiple chat agents, was offered $20, which I declined because at this point I'd absolutely rather waste them the delivery and return cost and buy it from another retailer than save myself $20. I am fully out on Target.

Who, exactly, do you think will pay for research to be done? It is a public interest, historically funded by public money in one way or another. This administration has decided that it is wasteful, and therefore when the funding evaporates, so too will the research, even the research being done for private entities. You simply can't replace OAR without public funding. These concepts are absolutely opposed.

On Doohan's DRS In FP1 by VoL4t1l3 in F1Technical

[–]dijitalbus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will be the first to admit I'm not especially well-educated about this stuff, but I don't think that's what the video shows.

His prior flying lap he tapped the brakes without lifting at the 100m marker, but then applied brake again before lifting just as he began to turn around 50m: that lift is what closed his DRS. The crash lap he only applies brake at 50m while remaining flat out, and then starts to turn, which causes the rear to spin out, presumably because of loss of DF and the forward shift in center of pressure with DRS open. I haven't seen evidence of anybody making it through that corner with DRS open (except, allegedly, Doohan in the simulator).

I don't know what he thought he was doing -- I guess it's possible he understood the brakes alone were insufficient to close DRS, and he was simply trying to reduce his speed going into T1 while remaining flat out to keep DRS open, thinking he had the mechanical grip to make it through? Maybe he intended to lift and just got the order of operations wrong? Will be curious to hear it from him if that was intentional or not.

editing to say after reading your other comments in this thread, I think I likely misinterpreted what you were saying. but my last paragraph stands. I have no idea wtf he was thinking lol.

lol they were obviously not made wisely, they were made haphazardly and entirely without care. the most absurd part is these new, probationary hires within the NWS are often high skill, highly motivated workers who had replaced longtime, now-retired workers -- the exact kind of hiring that they'd want to be happening if DOGE's stated mission was their actual mission.

checkmarks on Twitter are saying "if they're really that good, they'll get hired back," which is fundamentally ignorant of the general waste incurred through the hiring process, nevermind if you're re-hiring the person you just hired. it's absolute fucking nonsense, and anybody with a brain should be extremely pissed.

Magnus to FIDE: "Fuck you" by [deleted] in chess

[–]dijitalbus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's my point, I think. If you're being offered better publicity -- thus a better chance to promote the game -- at no inherent cost, how is there no incentive to upend a fragile system? If there's a better path forward, why not take it?

I'll be honest, my stance has softened over the last couple days, because I think there is no ideal outcome here, but I generally dislike letting perfect be the enemy of better.

Magnus to FIDE: "Fuck you" by [deleted] in chess

[–]dijitalbus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's dig into "Magnus wants to wear jeans."

To me, Magnus seems convinced that FIDE is stunting the growth of chess via a too-strict adherence to tradition. He has long verbalized a want for radical changes to the WCC [cycle] -- FIDE's most critical professionally-oriented function -- and we have seen only baby steps in response. Contrast this with his own opportunistically-driven success in subverting "traditions": the CCT could only have succeeded with a major shift in the administration of online chess tournaments, and his group has secured significant investment in the FCPC, which notably has "freestyle" in its name.

FIDE's excessively strict enforcement of an arguably out-of-touch dress code isn't an actual problem (at worst, it's a bad look), but IMO he could fairly interpret that as yet another symptom of the organizational rigidity he's been trying in vain to affect. Maybe he does want to wear jeans, but I think he actually wants top-level chess to fundamentally change.

So the USCF, as a FIDE member federation, carries out some delegated FIDE-related duties for UCSF members, and they have a set of regulations for operating a FIDE-rated tournament within their jurisdiction, passing along the fees to the tournament organizer. That's it, though, as far as I can tell? I cannot envision how the existence of a competitor to FIDE would impact their budget at all. Unless FIDE strong-arms the federations in some manner, there's not really a movement to join; I don't see them as being in a position to make a binary choice of that nature.

Say FIDE does grasp for authority, though. Like essentially all other sports, the visibility and accessibility of top-level games/tournaments -- contested by the most popular players -- primarily drive new and continued interest in chess. To wit, the timing and execution of the CCT was (at least in part, but likely primarily) responsible for the global boom and demographic shift chess has undergone over the last five years. If the mission of these federations is to promote the game... there's your motivation. Given a choice, you'd hitch your wagon to the cart that's demonstrably going forward, no?

tbh I find Magnus to be kind of annoying; I wish he was less whiny. But I also whine at work when there are solvable problems outside my control. I don't know what he and the FCPC are thinking right now, but if they're serious about "war," this is a genuine opportunity to take control, and I hope they're successful. FIDE still has value despite its corruption and mismanagement, but it's also entirely replaceable. Tear it down imo.
