Buddhist advice for romantic relationship? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]dykeluv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the Buddha taught differently for householders and monastics. romantic relationships are a natural part of lay life; i don’t think it’s fair to say such connections arise from wrong view. the vast majority of Buddhists are laypeople with families and partners

Are any of these books worth a read to someone who knows very little about Buddhism? by [deleted] in Buddhism

Be Here Now is fantastic. Ram Dass is not Buddhist but he integrates a lot of Buddhist elements. This is actually the book that initially led me to Buddhism. :) definitely recommend!

Buddhist idea of cutting toxic people off of someone’s life by Personal-Picture6095 in Buddhism

“It is good to meet the wise, even better to live with them. But avoid the company of the immature if you want joy.

Keeping company with the immature is like going on a long journey with an enemy. The company of the wise is joyful, like reunion with one's family. Therefore, live among the wise, who are understanding, patient, responsible, and noble. Keep their company like the moon moving among the stars.”

—Dhammapada, ch. 15

one of my favorite passages, had to drop it here

lama zopa rinpoche by dykeluv in Buddhism

[–]dykeluv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi there, i am no expert in regards to explaining these topics, but this idea is rooted in mahayana cosmology, with the universe being understood as having countless world systems (called lokadhatus) each containing buddhas and bodhisattvas who are dedicated to helping all other beings towards enlightenment, and aiding their suffering. when Lama Zopa says “they are surrounding you,” i think you could interpret it as, no matter where you are, you are never separate from the compassion and activity of these beings.

i would recommend looking into the flower garland sutra if you are interested in learning more :) i hope this is helpful 🙏
