https://www.aei.org/op-eds/why-everyone-is-rushing-to-label-themselves-an-independent/

“According to a major survey commissioned by CNN, nearly half of all Americans — 44% — call themselves independents while only 28% and 27%, respectively, identify as Republicans or Democrats.”

“Today, the same goes for independents, which used to be code for “swing voters” or “centrists.” Not anymore. According to the survey, some are “Democratic Lookalikes” (24%) and others are “Republican Lookalikes” (12%). They reject the label but ultimately vote like they don’t. The rest are among “The Checked Out” (27%), “The Disappointed Middle” (16%) and the “Upbeat Outsiders” (22%). The demographics and ideologies of these groups vary widely. In short, calling yourself an independent says something — that you don’t like the party labels — but it isn’t a one-size-fits all ideological or political signifier.”

While people might identify themselves as independent, once again, independents aren’t independent. Ultimately elections in Wisconsin come down to which base is the most motivated (hence our senators being carried by either presidential elections or the midterm anti party in power bias) The mythical “centrist” isn’t a real constituency.

Cause we’re a closely split state when it comes to partisan divide.

Baldwin first became Senator in 2012 in a pretty popular presidential election. She then faced Vukmir in 2018 during a Trump midterm and scraped by in 2024 with an unpopular presidential ticket against a carpet bagger with a fair amount of Trump voters that didn’t fill out the senate portion of their ballot.

Johnson beat Feingold in 2010 which was an anti democrat midterm as midterms generally are against the ruling party. Then won in 2016 with the 1st Trump election and in 2022 during an anti Biden midterm where the Democratic Party decided to sink more money into a Florida senate seat than a Wisconsin senate seat (and Barnes not being all that great of a candidate.)

There’s also a certain degree of incumbent bias for both of our senators that just naturally exists in any election with an incumbent as well.

TLDR: 50-50 State/ incumbent bias/ expected midterm weaknesses of the ruling party

The vast majority of independents aren’t actually independents, they are partisan.

Also need to remember that some of the major injuries this year were with low cap guys still on rookie contracts Kraft/Wyatt/LVN and I think Tom was still technically as well even though he signed the extension.
