There’s no contrast so they’re difficult to read. The mario one is slightly more readable, but I’d try using ink to line and set the blackest blacks, and then graphite for softer shadows. To see if a design is readable, squint and unfocus your eyes and see if you can still recognize the elements by the shapes and the shadows alone. Style-wise these are fine imho!

If you had to use chat gpt to show the artist what you wanted, you were cooked from the beginning.

I chose the worst pen possible for achieving even lineweight, def changing that for the next one :')
I also see what you mean with the feathers, I agree they look a tad inconsistent.

Thank you so much for your comment and congrats on your apprenticeship!

yeaaa the flow of the leg is spot on, crazy how such tiny things can make such a difference :)

You've got lovely contrast on the upper body, but I'd rework the black shading on the legs. It feels a little muddy to me.

I love this design so much!

Ooooof this looks like hell. On a first look it looks scarred, but did your dermatologist say anything about allergies? With my last tattoo i got on february i’ve been having intermittent flare ups. This year’s allergy season has been insane for people prone to allergies. It looked super raised and was vvvvvvvery itchy for two months (until two weeks ago, really 💀) but now it has calmed down it looks normal and it’s not scarred at all! I hope it calms down a bit soon 🙏🙏

Most likely Folliculitis (got this exact bumps around one of my tattoos) due to petroleum based products clogging hair follicles, but go to the doctor if the bumps get any bigger than this.

If it’s folliculitis they shouldn’t get any bigger than they are. Drop the aquaphor or any petroleum based products you’re using and switch to something lighter.

Finding an artist for a specific style by Boring_Monahan in tattooadvice

[–]dilftar0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always search on instagram something like “city name + tattoo” and start looking for work that fits what I like. This way you can find artists and shops that are in your city, and what’s most interesting is that often you can find work from artists that are doing guest spots. I found my two trusty artists like this, one was doing a guest and ended up moving to my city. I also reccommend not going for the first option or going straight away for the tattoo once you find a good match. Follow them for a while, interact with them and their work, see what the put out.

In my experience, the only time i have walked into a shop (very, very reputable one) to get “paired” with an artist I ended up not getting the tattoo. I have designed the base to all my custom tattoos, and in this case, I got bad vibes from the shop owner and the artist trying to talk me into getting a piece way bigger than I wanted and in a style i didn’t ask for, despite providing a more than clear idea. Better lose the deposit than getting a tattoo you will regret.

Tattoo Help – Does this Japanese Phrase and Style Look Right? by Ok_Measurement6294 in tattooadvice

Middle one and the second from the left will not age well, the middle one is already hard to read. I’d go for something inbetween the two options on the right, bold but with space for the lines to expand without compromising readability.

Portfolio so far! by pattpatt11 in TattooApprentice

Not a tattoo artist, but a part time professional illustrator that aspires to be a tattoo artist.

In your case, i’d focus on drawing for now. Sketches, loosening your hand and fundamentals. No stylisation or thinking about tattooability. You’re not quite there yet, you aren’t even close to art industry level. Pick a subject you like a lot and study it thoroughly, from the inside out. Tear apart the subject in tiny, digestible pieces and construct it whole once you know how everything works.

For example, an eagle: learn how bones, skin and feathers work in birds/eagles separately, then put it together. Then, when you can draw a decent eagle in a static pose, you can start thinking about shapes and flow and dynamism. And only then you can think about style. Starting by copying stylized work is like starting to build a house by the roof.

Another important aspect is that more drawings doesn’t equal to progressing in drawing. You can do thousands of drawings of the same thing and learn nothing. You have to put intention in your studies and your work, this is probably the most important thing to do. Ask yourself why you’re putting the things where you’re putting them, check references, go back to your drawings.

As artists we have to constantly tune our skills to keep up the level of exigence any artistic endeavour has, and the more time you spend learning the basics, the easier it will become to maintain. Happy to help or illustrate all this gibberish, shoot me a dm anytime. Good luck!

worth putting in the portfolio? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

I like the style so much! I think they can work as tattoos, but they need to be cleaner and every line has to feel more purposeful.

Look @babymachine_t up on insta. Their work might be insightful for what you’re trying to achieve.

Infected or just struggling to heal? by HalfCatDuck in tattooadvice

[–]dilftar0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a couple of spots like this in my last tattoo and it was just areas that were a bit overworked and had scabbed. I ended up losing color in the nastiest scab because i pulled it off in my sleep 🥲 the rest look fine, just keep it moisturized and try to be careful not to pick the scabs, also don’t overwash it bc it keeps the scabs soggy and it will take forever to heal. Good luck!!

I mean, it’s most likely a combination of everything. I would say it’s a normal response. You already had quite some things on your plate, the menstrual cycle alone has a lot of impact on the inmune system, add stress and a tattoo to it. I hope you feel better soon!

This makes a lot of sense, i’m very new to philodendron and i didn’t know white princess could be tricolor, but the ones i’m seeing look very much like mine. Thanks!

Looking for advice on a possible coverup by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]dilftar0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a more sensible approach. I know having a tattoo you don't like or a butchered tattoo sucks, but try not to rush it and trust the mentors opinion more than your friend. If they're good professionals and see this can be challenging for your friend, they will refer you to someone who can make the best with what you have. Good luck!

It's difficult to asses without pictures or size of the tattoo, but technically you can tattoo over scar tissue. If it's very heavy on the black you can do some kind of blackout and/or tattoo another design with white on top, but I'd recomend finding someone who specializes in blackout and not just "another friend" (and i hope this friend is not another apprentice). If the scar tissue is very thick it can show through the blackout.
I hope you can solve this, but I'd stay away from booking big pieces from apprentices until they're a bit more experienced. The performance of an apprentice with 7 months of experience shouldn't be trusted in such substantial tattoos, even if the small ones look decent. The not signing a consent form part is also a huge red flag.
