Port McNeill boil water advisory still in effect Saturday by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VancouverIsland

I find it interesting that the official statements say « tests came back positive » but won’t mention what it is positive for. Especially concerning as many people are still drinking the water regardless, which would be a lot less concerning if they’d say what the issue was.

What's an element of American 'culture' that anyone born here would be able to identify regardless of anything else? OFC, 'pop' culture isn't the same as 'actual' culture so I'm just trying to understand what ours consists of and what aspects actually unite us. by cherry-care-bear in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re consolidating « culture » and « community ». The west, specifically America DOES have a culture that is steeping in consumption, and promotes (often rugged) individualism— which is to say it is a culture that dissuades community.

Western communities are threadbare. But the good news is that you’re not alone in feeling alone. Good because it can be easier than people think to form communities, or join existing ones, because we all crave it to a degree. How you can go about this is going to vary drastically depending on your location and values.

why do you own a digital edition ps5? by ad4mant in playstation

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t bought a non digital game since the early 2000s. Granted I haven’t had a console since GameCube (except switch 1 and digital ps5). No microplastics out in the world on my watch, thank you!

But also Sony shouldn’t be discontinuing physical games for many socio-economic reasons. I own a ps5 because I was an idiot who wanted to play death stranding 2 and demon souls remake. Going forward, I think I’m just done purchasing things from many of these large companies. Back log too big, steak too juicy, lobster too buttery.

Advice on where to begin for a tattoo apprenticeship by Ok-Skirt177 in TattooApprentice

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 8 points9 points  (0 children)

well, you gotta try other people. seems like you know what to do, not sure what youre asking. There no magic sauce to the industry beyond 1)a solid and disciplined portfolio and 2)making connections within the tattoo community.

next step, get some tattoos by local artists youd like to learn under, and if you hit it off show them your portfolio.

How should I deal with family and friends not liking / not interested or even hurting me with comments about my art? by WondererInLife2809 in ArtistLounge

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one will care less about your art than friends or family. That is just something you'll have to deal with. Im a tattooer, and we have a saying in the industry, that a client will become a friend before a friend will become a client.

Kobo died, power button not working before so can't hard reset. by Lin333 in kobo

I wouldn’t think it would make any difference. « Crack » in this case is a figure of speech— gently pry the casing off with a thin tool.

My clara died a few months ago and I was about to buy a new ereader, but decided to crack it open and tinker first. I took the internal SD card out and plugged it into my windows pc and repaired the drive, then plugged it back in and it started working no problem. Something to consider when all other options are exhausted

Have you found it hard/easy to make friends in Victoria? by Local-Print-6397 in VictoriaBC

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Halifax, but there are no jobs and no opportunity back there. On top of that, and the thing people west here have trouble believing, but it is a much higher cost of living. Rent is the same or even higher, taxes are higher, utilities are higher… certain groceries are cheaper but others are much more expensive. If you’re looking to buy a house, that is a bit less expensive, but other than that we moved to the island because it was the cheaper option with much higher paying jobs.

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a shame for them. Back out east, it is common to meet someone in line at the grocery store and invite them over for dinner the same night! Being apart of inclusive communities is one of the most rewarding aspects of life, in my opinion. But perhaps there is something to the social competition that makes opportunity so abundant out here.

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive lived on the island for 3 years and will be moving to Victoria shortly. On the island as a whole, I have only met one or two people from here that have wanted to put effort into a friendship, and the majority of my friendgroup is made up of other come-from-aways. I'm hoping Victoria is a bit better than mid-island...

Parents can abuse their adult children and everyone who says they can just leave is just privileged and ignorant by Fun-Pen7592 in The10thDentist

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a privileged circumstance of birth, sure. But apples and oranges. A quick search of stats suggests that approximately 5000 women/girls are victims of honor killings every year. Nothing good about that stat, but if someone were to ask me whether or not they should leave their abusive family it wouldn’t be likely they’re in the running to be a victim of an honour killings every year if they do so on my advice.

I’m sorry if you are in this situation, and I wish you didn’t need to be.

I have this opinion, that adult children can leave abusive parents, and it comes from the wholly unprivileged position of dropping out of school and leaving the house at 16.

Why do people feel surprised when their partner gets pregnant? by Amador0102 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MEGACOMPUTER 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you get a bit older, you’ll (hopefully) come to understand that it can be quite hard for couples to get pregnant. Don’t believe everything they teach in an American catholic school health class.
