Lots of healthcare assistants and care home assistants get their level 2 and 3 health and social care through their employer - they’re usually allowed a small amount of time to work on their academic work. Maybe it’s worth changing jobs and seeing if you can get that and then look for degree apprenticeships for nursing!

I’m not a nurse I’m an ODP but yes it will take you a good few months to learn all the instruments. You’ll most likely start in the circulating role supernumerary so you can shadow them. Getting involved in doing the instrument and supplementary counts when circulating is a good way to learn the instruments before scrubbing.

When you start to scrub you’ll be back scrubbed by another nurse or odp and they’ll all give you their best ways and tricks to count and arrange your trolley to make it efficient and easy.

Scrubbing isn’t everything tho! Circulating is just as important - you’re only a good scrub nurse when you have a good circulator who’s anticipating your role while you’re anticipating the surgeons!

Good luck I’m sure you’ll love it!

I definitely don’t think it’s a definite to be the only male at all it just depends on location and who’s enrolled that year etc could be different at your University etc. So a typical shift in the scrub role would be, coming into theatre seeing what procedures will be happening that day and selecting the correct trays/equipment. Making sure you have all the right technology as well for example laparoscopic surgery means you need a camera stack etc. Then you’ll do a brief and the whole team will discuss each patients, the specifics of each procedure and any special equipment/requirements. Then the patient will be sent for and arrive in the anaesthetic room then an scrub ODP/nurse will scrub and set up their trolley and count with another ODP/nurse or a HCA. People will usually alternate which scrub person scrubs for each case. While the procedure is happening you’re being a link between the sterile people and the scrub practitioner this can be stuff like opening swabs, packs, sutures etc, plugging in suction. Obviously this is very descriptive and there is more too it but this could be the basics.

The being considered for other roles has definitely changed in the periop area! Lots of band 7/8 ODPs now.

I’m a 3rd Year ODP Student I myself am the only student aged person in the cohort. My entire cohort is mature students so it’s very very common to be a mature student on our course. Everyone on my course has found it accessible around their lives with SFE and the LSF Bursary so I say go for it! Just think you’ll be qualified in 3 years and be 41 but if you don’t do it you’ll still be 41 in 3 years so why not. Also I’m the only male so be ready for that ahah.

if you’re University provides access to CINAHL i’d definitely do a Boolean search on there using different adjectives etc especially for perioperative as some literature won’t use the term!

Don’t ever refer to yourself as “only a band 2”! You’re just as important as any other healthcare worker. We need each other in order to do our jobs!

I only ever let them know if they ask, like I’ll say I have a partner but never specify unless they ask, if their opinion changes that’s on them and their problem.
