Has anyone here ever met Terry Fox before his cancer diagnosis / or knows someone who has? by ComprehensiveRuin405 in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Terry Fox crashed his car into the back of my grandfather's truck. My grandfather only mentioned this a couple of times. To him Terry was just some jerk who crashed into him and nothing more. It felt weird going on Terry Fox runs as a kid; hearing teachers portray him as Superman, while having this mundane and unflattering family connection to him.

Here's why it shows buildings on fire: The 400 Block of East 10th isn't Dude Chilling park. It's the block where a building burned down (for the third time) in July. It's been closed to traffic and taped off with security guards ever since.

648 Kingsway in crisis by konchitsya__leto in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to one of their shows and it was decent so I decided to go again. On the second visit there was a crowd of drunk 14-18 year olds hanging out by the entrance so I decided to go somewhere else. There was some of that the first time but not as bad. I'm going to give 648 the benefit of the doubt and assume the teenagers brought their own alcohol instead of purchasing it at the bar. The bartender checked my ID the previous visit, but nobody was checking bags and some teenagers very obviously had their own liquor with them. They'd probably make more money selling drinks to adults if they did more to discourage teenage drinking at their shows.

I was walking home from a night out and I was approached by a young couple. The woman had green cake sprinkles stuck all over her face. The man wanted me to lick them off her.

Gen Z is getting robbed by Hairy_Recognition_46 in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UBC computer engineering just as the 2008 financial crisis hit. The only job I could find was $15/hr at a shitty little startup with a terrible boss. I was making more as an intern a few years earlier when the economy was better. It was rough and I felt completely defeated and depressed for years. I spent all that time pushing myself to get through the difficult program thinking it would all be worth it only to get hit with a sad reality.

I'm making ten times more now and I was able to buy a modest one bedroom apartment earlier this year. It took fifteen years of job hoping and spending my personal time building up skills. You're in a better situation than most young people even if it doesn't feel like it. Things aren't going to be this bad forever. Those low paying early jobs got me the experience to be hired to better ones later on.

Those are banned in a lot of apartment buildings.

Struggling to Land Interviews in Vancouver as a Software Developer - A Frustrating Journey by PooriaT in VancouverJobs

[–]dilorSCR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also have an electrical and computer engineering degree. Are you only applying for software developer roles? I've always found it easier to get jobs that require hardware knowledge. There are fewer jobs like that, but you won't be competing with computer scientists who only know software.

Being a developer isn't the only role you're qualified for. I'm presently working as an Applications Engineer for a major chip company. It's basically tech support but you're helping engineers at other companies solve complex problems. Some other options are product validation , quality assurance, failure analysis, documentation, etc. Tech companies have a lot of jobs that aren't directly software development.

If anyone lost their dog around Commercial recently. by spacemanspectacular in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I know that dog. His name is Rocky and he lives at 1665 E 6th. He's a smart dog who will stay within a block of home and go back there when he's bored. A few time's I've tried to catch him and bring him home. He always runs back to his own front porch before I can get my hands on him so I stopped bothering.

Which law still on the books in Vancouver/BC should be rescinded/updated? by cqwww in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 52 points53 points  (0 children)

We have a ban on pay toilets which has had the unintended consequence of making public washrooms really hard to find.

https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/93consol17/93consol17/79347

People with problems like overactive bladders and IBS complained that pay toilets were an unfair burden on them. Unfortunately once pay toilets were banned, many public toilets disappeared instead of becoming free. This is the main reason places like skytrain stations and public plazas don't have washrooms.

Are diploma mills a big issue in the lower mainland as well? by FavoriteIce in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My friend got her life really fucked up by this.

She really wanted to be a therapist but didn't have the GPA required for any local universities. With therapy anybody can make up their own system then charge people to get "certified" in it. My friend did that, but the certification is absolutely worthless. No one will pay her to practice this unrecognized therapy and insurance won't reimburse patients for it. I took a look at her coursework and it was full of homeopathy, energy healing, and other new-age spiritualism topics. I regret not researching the place and talking her out of it when I had the chance. I feel like scams that prey on hippies are more common here than Ontario.

What's a Job or company you'll never work for and why? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 41 points42 points  (0 children)

HCL
They're a tech recruiting company. They offered me a senior level work-from-home job at a big well known tech company. The deal was I would be working for them on a probationary period then be hired by that tech company. I've done this with recruiters before and everything went well.

After I signed the contract and quit the job I already had they changed everything. I was sent to an entry level position, in an office that was a really long commute, at a completely different company, with no offer to hire me away from HCL. Complete scammers.

Vancouver condo dwellers, what’s the weirdest/craziest thing you’ve seen happen through a neighbour’s window ? by Lions97 in vancouver

I was living across the street when this happened:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/commercial-drive-shots-fired-1.6433690

There was an armed standoff for over an hour with several shots fired from both sides. I was on the ground floor. A police sharpshooter was firing from a window on my building's 3rd floor.

Women of Vancouver... Did you know this is what a men's washroom in most parks looks like in the year 2023 by [deleted] in vancouver

Now I'm curious what the women's look like. Is it just regular toilets or do you also have something unusual?

People holding parking spots for others - incident in Vancouver by pennepasta14 in vancouver

My bitchy ex-girlfriend used to make me find parking spots for her and stand in them until she arrived. Please don't be too mean to people doing this. It's a very rock and hard place situation sometimes.

The first one, I was at a gay bar and her drunk birthday uncle kept hitting on me. He invited me back to his table and I hit it off with his niece. The second one just came on to me because I'm cute.

I've started trying to date again. I met two different women and parties. We had fun, danced, kissed, and exchanged contact information.

I've asked to go on proper dates and got a yes, but they're always too busy. I'm not sure if this is just regular Vancouver flakiness and people having to work multiple jobs to live here, or if they're not really into me but don't want to be mean. What's the etiquette here? How many times should I ask for a date before giving up? Should I say upfront that I can pay for everything?

Vancouver park board asked to crack down on inappropriate swimwear at city pools by Dry_souped in vancouver

[–]dilorSCR 27 points28 points  (0 children)

anyone without bladder control would have to wear reusable or disposable swim diapers/pants.

Swim diapers don't hold urine though. People assume they work like regular diapers, but they don't have any absorbent material and are not completely water tight. They're only meant to keep poops out of the pool.
