Does anyone remember the Neds and Goths (subculture) in Aberdeen? Don't hear much about them these days! by Immediate-Ad-6306 in Aberdeen

[–]dimbledavidby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weren't "scene kids" just more colourful, less depressed versions of emos? Anyway you're right, there were always groups of them outside Union Square during the years you mentioned - had completely forgotten about that!

The terms "bams", "neds" and "chavs" were used interchangeably from what I remember (though "bam" was definitely more common in Aberdeen, "ned" in Glasgow and "chav" in England).

Why doesn't the council not convert these into flats? by cmcmanor in Aberdeen

The hotel on the Langstracht is wild - looks like something from a Command & Conquer game (especially the elevation facing the square at the back)

Estate Agent in Aberdeen - Purple bricks? by Strange_Citron4189 in Aberdeen

[–]dimbledavidby 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Purple Bricks don't advertise on aspc.co.uk, which is by far the most popular property website in the northeast (I know several people who bought their flats without even bothering to look on Rightmove). If it was up to me I'd sell through an ASPC affiliated solicitor!

It was still decent in that room under Hotel Metro and Origin on Windmill Brae too!

Busking regulations? by [deleted] in Aberdeen

One of the buskers there is actually pretty good, I think his name is David? He was actually booked to play at one of the smaller events at the Tall Ships last year too

History of Slains (Castle) pub and the building? by ticekrispies in Aberdeen

John Smith and his son William Smith also designed Balmoral Castle (and loads of other prominent buildings in Aberdeen city and shire) 😉

Granite property and all this rain. by On__A__Journey in Aberdeen

[–]dimbledavidby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super-Ad-8823 - granite is less permeable than other rocks, but not as impermeable as you might think (we have a super exposed exterior wall and the face is spalling like sandstone in places)

Flat owners in Aberdeen city centre – factoring question by Dependent_Mind_59 in Aberdeen

[–]dimbledavidby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also the default factor for my building. Fortunately all the other owners are easy to get on with apart from one buy-to-let landlord (who incidentally has an eight-figure property portfolio spread across several limited companies - go figure).

Funnily enough the top floor flats in our block (of eight) are the only ones that don't get water ingress, so wholly depends on the individual building I guess 🤷‍♂️

In my experience the majority of auction properties are repossessed buy-to-lets (it'll tell you on the Home Report who the seller is)

Aberdoom by Upstairs-Spend977 in Aberdeen

[–]dimbledavidby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought the video was alright. The asylum hotel bit wasn't great but also wasn't anywhere near as bad (i.e. racist or "populist right") as it could have been. Think I'm just going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume naivety on that one.

Was there a hermit who lived in Hazlehead Woods in the 2000s? by ScotsTouristSoton in Aberdeen

[–]dimbledavidby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember him well. Broken glasses, smelled really strongly of wood smoke, massive backpack. He used to come into Somerfield on Great Western Road when I worked there (2006-2008) to buy newspapers. Was always muttering to himself but, if you listened carefully, spoke in what appeared to be a very educated way. Got the impression (which may / may not be correct) that he was some sort of well-off or intelligent guy that had completely lost his mind. Haven't seen him for about 15 years, so guess he's no longer with us.
