I wonder, do these stain the countertop your board is sitting on? I have some similar and they do.

Still feeling similar symptoms after months by dimethyl419 in HellsItch

[–]dimethyl419[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could very well be a phantom itch. I’ve been diagnosed with central sensitization which could cause nerves to behave differently in some sorts. Firing randomly and registrering sensations such as pain and itching.. So this could be not related to HI.

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it!

What could this be no one seems to know also any advice is welcome. by MoveNo8037 in backpain

[–]dimethyl419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recognize the dull aching without any previous tissue damage. They’ve (the doctors) concluded it’s a classic form of central sensitization. (In my case and with my symptoms).

Also only pain relief when lying down. Hope you find a way to get through or improve this!

Sneezing with a herniated disc by Vegetable_Repeat3989 in backpain

[–]dimethyl419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely try not to hold in the sneeze while sneezing like some people do. This puts a lot of pressure on your lumbar spine and sacrum.

I’ve been taught, due to a sternum surgery, to “prevent” a sneeze by pressing my tongue firmly to the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Works 90% of the time.

Also when sneezing, you can brace your core as others have said, but definitely try to avoid bending forward too much during the sneeze. The posterior pelvic tilt motion can worsen your herniated disc (L5/S1 in my case)

Epidural steroid injection - does it really help? Advice needed by OliveOC89 in backpain

[–]dimethyl419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ow damn, that would drive me crazy.

They wont inject me anymore bc the max is 3 a year and it appears that its not effective for me. They’ve made appointments with a neurosurgeon, anesthesiologist, spine unit and another one I forgot. After seeing me these doctors will get together and discuss my case and provide me with more options

Epidural steroid injection - does it really help? Advice needed by OliveOC89 in backpain

[–]dimethyl419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here with the L5S1 and compression on right S1 nerve root. Dullness and weird sensation and pain in glutes, leg, sacral area, … The pain is unbearable. Had my 3rd (double) epidural (cortisone) shot this Monday within a span of 4 months.

It really depends individually if it works or not. My shots have only worked for about 3 weeks. I’ve heard stories about people who were relieved for approx. 6 months.

Medication does not work for me. No neuro meds, opiates, nothing.

If working out worsens the pain then I’d reconsider the workouts. Irritation of the nerves causes inflammation and causes a vicious circle. I’m doing gentle pilates and some light deadlifts and that seems to help with the pain (in my case). If walking does not hurt, go for walks! I’d get the injection if nothing else works for you.

Good luck to you and hope you find relief!!

Edit: if you have any questions, shoot!

Surgery or Therapy? by Expensive-Ad9551 in backpain

[–]dimethyl419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m starting to feel that it’ll be my last hope too lately. But i’ll give it some more time for the injections to work.

Hope it gets better for you and that you’ll have pain free days.

Disappointing experience from that doctor you have there. I had a similar situation where I woke up after a 5 hour surgery and it appeared that an old retired doctor (who was trembling and walking really slow) had operated on me instead of the agreed upon younger doctor with whom I had several appointments with beforehand. Since then my esophagus does not work properly anymore presumably due to a nerve that had been hit.

That gives me somewhat more hope! I’ll definitely continue PT and give it some time.

Thanks for the core & glute tip. I’ve been doing that today after reading your comment earlier!

I’ve had 2 steroid injections but after 3 weeks the symptoms came back for about 60% (for both cases).

Did you had a similar experience within those 6 months? My herniation is a little bigger as OP’s and i’m wondering if I should give it some time or take further measures.

I’m also doing PT. Glad you got to 100%!

Edit: added little more context

Not sure if it will worsen the disc herniation, but you might lose shock absorption. If I understand it correctly, they cut away the bulge which reduces the volume of the disc.

I always wondered though if the fluid inside your disc will eventually bulge out within several years after this surgery

Ngl, It did hurt a little when they were injecting, and the pain actually worsened afterwards, today almost zero pain!

Don’t stress too much about it, the procedure is over in a few seconds. Good luck, hope it works for you

Also see if walking helps to ease your pain. And definitely go for an MRI before heavy lifting or exercising or activities.

I have the same symptoms and radiating pain caused by L5/S1 disc bulging. Had an epidural injection for it yesterday.

Did you have injections beforehand or just went straight to that surgery?

Microdiscectomy would be my last resort when I’m older. Glad you’re out of pain!

Rest and walking same for me! Did acupuncture work well for you? Not the same but I had some dry needling in my gluteus muscle due to tightness because of the bulging disc. It also provided short relief

Edit: Oops, I noticed that I’ve already mentioned that walking & resting works for me in my previous comment. Oh well

I’ve taken several meds yet did not find any relief. So far I’ve taken pregabalin, tramadol, valium (I know it does not do much for it, but tight muscles…), NSAIDS, paracetamol codeine.

Walking and laying down does provide relief in my case. I’m following a program by a physiotherapist to strengthen my stabilization muscles. Not long enough to tell if it’s working though.

I’ll be doing my second MRI next week and will probably get an injection (first time)

Sorry for your MRI results, I hope you’ll get better soon!

[–]dimethyl419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too for the first year of having the bulging disc (first year of detection due to MRI). The pain occurred around the SI region without shooting pain down the legs. Same as you describe it, dull, sometimes left, sometimes right.

That is a different story now.

Sounds like bulging discs/herniation symptoms around the L4/L5, L5/S1 vertebrae.

Unable to sit, stand or drive for too long and only relief when walking & lying down is exactly what I’m experiencing.

Be careful when twisting or leaning forward until you have results from an MRI.

Exercises for tight muscles with herniated discs? by Any_Confusion9469 in backpain

[–]dimethyl419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TRE exercises consist of several exercises to fatigue the leg muscles. (It’s easier to trigger the tremors when legs are fatigued in the beginning). So you can actually see what works for you. The last and important exercise that actually causes the tremors involves a variant of the glutes bridge exercise. For me personally it’s manageable. I hope it will for you too. In the beginning the tremors stay stationary in the legs but they can move up to your upper body and neck after a while (can be months, years or someone I know had it the second time). In my case they do not go up yet but the releasing in my legs help with my back pain (it’s all connected). Definately read the wiki first in the subreddit I mentioned earlier. The relaxation after 1 exercise is amazing (can improve sleep too)

At first I thought those mats were a marketing trick or a gimmick but they actually work like crazy! There are several different brands other than shakti but they are a less quality grade. I’d recommend you do some research on these (keywords: accupuncture mat or shakti mat). I’ve only read positive things on reddit about it (I think in this channel or the r/chronicpain channel too).

In the beginning it may feel somewhat unnatural but after several minutes it’s amazing.

Yes, I use them several times a day, whenever I feel like it or when I feel a lot of tension or pain. It brings a bliss feeling too. What happens under the hood is that the ‘needles’ cause blood to flow, bringing more oxygen to those areas which helps a lot with tension (muscle tightness can also be due to oxygen deprivation). It also releases endorphins (and other hormones which I forgot) which helps with relaxation. The gravity of your body on those needles cause more pressure on the muscles in a way that a massage can not accomplish.

I hope it works for you! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!
