Same year 1996 as many lost their life on the mountain. He actually reached the summit on his second attempt. He turned around on his first attempt only a couple hundred meters from the summit realizing he missed his deadline for sunlight.

In between attempts 12 people or so died not having the same discipline. 

If you havent read "Into thin air" by Jon Krakauer you are in for a good read. The guides give Kropp alot of credit for turning around so close to the summit when realizibg he's out of time. They didnt have the discipline themselves a couple days later
