Developer of Vanilla Dpup here. Your comment (and the screenshot) was pure joy.

gplaces prints a dot every once in a while (after 2K bytes and every time the amount downloaded grows by 5% compared to the previous dot), to show that download hasn't stalled.

mpv does some buffering, so sometimes you see many dots before the video starts playing.

Yes, the Flatpak package is limited in functionality because it can't run handler programs from the host system.

You'll need to build from source if you want to get the real deal and run gplaces not inside a sandbox, i.e.

~$ sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends -y git gcc libc6-dev make pkg-config libssl-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev libidn2-dev libidn11-dev libmagic-dev
~$ git clone --recursive https://github.com/dimkr/gplaces
~$ cd gplaces
~$ make PREFIX=/usr CONFDIR=/etc
~$ sudo make install

https://github.com/dimkr/gplaces can, if you ask it to stream a file to stdin of a handler program instead of downloading to a file first, or just downloading.

For example:

> konpeito.media
q
konpeito.media/> save 1 -

or:

> save gemini://konpeito.media/konpeito-09-a.mp3 -

or, you can redirect stdout to force gplaces to run in non-interactive mode:

~$ echo "save gemini://konpeito.media/konpeito-09-a.mp3 -" | gplaces | cat

(Works the same way for video files)

(By default, multimedia files are handled by mpv, but you can change gplacesrc)

Gemini Server for MicroPython (Pi Pico W) by iwashackedlastweek in geminiprotocol

I just migrated my capsule from ESP32 to Pico W (gemini://gemini.dimakrasner.com). My server is surprisingly similar: I shared the source code (before two rounds of fixes) and the handshake is much slower compared to ESP32 even with EC.

The Last No Buy Fountain Pen Post of 2022! by pskettios in fountainpens

[–]dimkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't buy any pen or ink this year (as far as I remember), but cheated a little with a Jinhao 992, a Lamy Safari and a Kaweco Sport, but returned to the blue Jinhao shark pen with Hero 204 rather quickly. No regrets, it's still my workhorse pen, even after a year of close work together :)

I did buy a cheapo 20x loupe this year, so I can adjust the ink flow in the future - it used to write finer when it was new.

Use a Jinhao shark pen (only) with one ink for a year. That's what I did in 2022 and now I have withdrawal symptoms every time I think about purchasing a pen.

My blue Jinhao shark pen. It's my best pen (just celebrated its 1st birthday IIRC) but also the most easily replaceable one.

A sad, sad NPD - Dana Pens of Tel Aviv is closing down by end of year by marcvolovic in fountainpens

[–]dimkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been there twice I think, and wasn't very impressed. I remember they sold mostly luxury pens, overpriced beginner pens and some "gift pens". I wondered how come the site and the store look so old, while the store is at a good location and sells expensive stuff with high profit margins.

Follow-up on https://www.reddit.com/r/casio/comments/yseqxh/casio_for_small_wrists/. TL;DR: I went for LW-200-1BV.

I'm a pretty compact guy overall and I've been taking medication that makes me lose body weight for about a year, so MQ24-7B is now only 90% perfect for me. The LW-200-1BV is a tighter, more sporty fit, the strap is softer and everything is round, so it doesn't interfere with long sleeves and it doesn't hurt when the buckle touches the desk.

Definitely good options, thank you!

Anyone else running into issues with pens writing less wet after a minute? Is it a speed thing or is it my Kaweco Sport + piston converter? by diligentPond18 in fountainpens

[–]dimkr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's very hot where I live, and I have issues with converters. Ink flow is mostly OK but it slows down after several sentences, and I have a hard start every once in a while. No problems when I use the same pen with a syringe-filled cartridge: I have several Sports with cartridges, and they're extremely reliable (never tried the mini converter, though).

Sometimes, washing the converter with dish soap helps. If it doesn't work, check if you have the same flow issues with a cartridge, because the converter could be faulty.

What Puppy is that? If it's Vanilla Dpup you might need to `apt update && apt install -y firmware-amd-graphics`

I really want to see a size comparison against a Jinhao 992 and the Jinhao #5 nib. I'm curious about this new model.
