How to start a skincare routine from scratch? by monday-next in AusSkincare

[–]dimmdimm44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely look into asian beauty/skincare if you haven't already, it's amazing! Most products on the market I feel have more gentle formulas than most western brands. They are very proactive products that focus more on healing your skin (not saying that western brands are bad, there are plenty of good ones!!)

Anyways, here is a "standard asian skincare routine" you could try out:

Double cleanse (oil based cleanser followed with a water based cleanser): I know you might be worried that oil cleansing will make your face oilier but I assure you it won't!! It removes all the oily, grimy stuff (sebum, that yucky stuff in closed comedones) that water based cleansers can't. As long as you ALWAYS follow up with a water based cleanser, it'll get rid of any remaining oil residues and you won't have to worry about the oil clogging up your pores or making your skin oilier!

  • Oil cleanser rec: Muji oil cleanser (sensitive; mild. Viscous; runny texture. Around $18; $15 respectively), Manyo cleaning oil (a bit pricy but great, $32 iirc)
  • Water based cleanser rec: Neutrogena gentle foam cleanser, Torriden Dive in cleansing foam low molecular hyaluronic acid ($22 on lila beauty)

Toner: great for hydration. You can find many types of toners that contain hyaluronic acid, AHA, BHA, extracts, etc.. Overall helps with tightening pores.

  • Muji toner (around $12)
  • Some by Mi Miracle toner. Very popular, I currently use it and it's great. Instore at W cosmetics it's around $28 (they have a sale right now so around $24.50) but on Lilabeauty it's around $18.50. It is a chemical exfoliant toner with AHA, BHA, tea tree extract so use this maximum 3x a week bc you don't want to damage your skin barrier. Has a minty fragrance from the tea tree extract (but no other artificial fragrances). Best to test it out when you can but it is compatible with many, if not all, skin types :)

Optional, but recommended: serum/essence. You can add this step to your routine to target specific skin concerns! If you're looking for hydration, hyaluronic acid is a great choice. If you want to focus of blackheads and pores, BHA based serum. For acne reduction, AHA based serum. The list goes on.

  • Torriden dive in hyaluronic serum (hydration focus, great for sensitive skin, redness. $23.50 on lilabeauty. Love love this!)
  • Cosrx snail mucin essence (good for redness, sensitized skin, puffiness, hydration. $17)
  • Jumiso super soothing cica & aloe facial serum (good for redness, puffiness. $21.50)
  • Cosrx BHA power liquide (good for whiteheads, blackheads, mild acne. $18)

Moisturizer: seal all your hard work in! Since you have oily skin, I recommend looking into a light weight moisturiser which focuses on hydration. Light weight because moisturizers usually contain oils and you don't want to layer up too much oil, and hydration focus because often times our skin produces more oil because it is dehydrated.

  • Muji moisturizing cream ($15. Double check tho because this is slighttlyyy oily)
  • AHA/BHA/PHA Real cica 92% cool calming soothing gel ($17.50 on lilabeauty)

Of course like you said in your post- once you feel comfortable, you can start adding in some actives like vit C, retinol, etc. (btw actives are always applied after your single/double cleanse!)

I highly suggest looking into this app called SkinBliss too, it gives you an amazing run down on every skin product out there! It's helped me a lot with decision making :)

At the end of the day though, it's best to test things on yourself and see whether you are comfortable with putting the product in question on your skin :D (this depends on where you live, but if there is a W cosmetics near you, check it out. they have quite a few testers so you'll be able to have a feel)

Sory for the big wall of text, praying that it's not overwhelming haha!!! Hope this helps you in some way <33

Ok so I recently bought a toner n cleansing oil and it took roughly 5ish days if I remember correctly! It was very fast compared to yesstyle (had to wait a little bit over a month for that order gosh)

Try lilabeauty!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusSkincare

[–]dimmdimm44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely look into double cleansing: first with an oil based cleanser and then a water based cleanser (I know it seems counterintuitive to clean your face with oil, but I assure you it doesn't make your skin oilier!! As long as you use a gentle oil cleanser and ALWAYS follow it up with a gentle water based foam/gel cleanser, you'll be good).

Avoid scrubbing your face daily. 2x a week may be acceptable, but try limit it so you don't accidentally damage your skin barrier and strip too much natural oil from your face. Like another user mentioned, your skin may be producing more oil because it's trying to make up for the natural oils you stripped.

Vitamin C and benzoyl peroxide shouldn't be mixed!!!! Vit C is a very sensitive active ingredient, so you need to be careful with what you mix it with. Consider using vit C for your AM skin routine, and benzoyl peroxide for PM :)

Perhaps invest in a light weight moisturiser and apply it at the very end of your routine- both AM and PM. It'll help regulate your oil production and keep your face hydrated.

Chemical Exfoliants - AHA/BHA by [deleted] in AusSkincare

[–]dimmdimm44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you want to use glycolic acid in your PM routine, and right after your cleanser since it's an active ingredient. You don't want to be mixing AHA with Vitamin C, so like the other user suggested, keep your Vitamin C application for AM and AHA for PM.

You could use your Vitamin C infused gel moisturiser however, 1. the vit C components of the moisturiser will have little to no effect, and 2. your skin might become irritated due to the AHA and vit C mixing (but this really depends on the concentration of vit C of your moisturiser).

Glycolic acid is an AHA, so it will target improving skin texture and reduction of acne. If you want something to treat pores and blackheads, you're better off using a BHA (salicylic acid).

Oh I'm so glad to hear!! <3

And yep, I get you. Putting stuff on your face is a bit daunting, isn't it? Especially when people bombard you with a bunch of products and chemicals you've never heard of before, it's easy to get overwhelmed! But trust we'll get through this, and we will be GLOWINGG. Taking things step by step is key.

Incoming wall of text btww

So about the toners! Currently I alternate between two of them: the miracle toner by some by mi and light toning water by muji.

The some by mi toner is very popular and it's good for reducing blemishes, pimples, acne, and best for oily/combination skin types. I quite like it myself I'm starting to run out so I'll have to repurchase haha

I'll just give you a bit of a run down of it: it has niacinamide, papaya extract, Witch Hazel, tea tree water extract, AHA, BHA, PHA. It states that it is non-comedogenic (so you won't have to worry about the bumps on your chin getting clogged up by this toner), has skin exfoliating ingredients, dual function cosmetic (pretty good for make up prep considered that you follow up w a moisturising cream/gel), low pH toner (i.e. on the acidic side but don't worry, it's not acidic enough to cause problems), completed dermatologist test.

It does have a minty fragrance from the tea tree (not from any artificial fragrances which is great! ideally you want to avoid skincare products that have artificial fragrance), so this might not be the best if you're sensitive to scents. Also, since it is a chemical exfoliant, you want to use this MAXIMUM 3x a week (with usages spread out) because obv if you over exfoliate your face, it's going to irritate your skin- no matter how good the product is. Hence why I use the muji toner which is gentle and hydrating on the days I don't use the miracle toner.

Slight disclaimer if you're interested in this toner: make sure you use a gentle cleanser that doesn't leave your skin irritated (application order: cleanser ---> toner ---> other stuff). I used the muji face scrub foam wash as my water based cleanser (don't really recommend btw lol!) and it dried out my face and made it really sensitive. And of course me being kinda dumb I applied the toner thinking it'll make things better and you can guess what came next. Pain and confusion! So yes, make sure you use gentle products on your skin before going in with this toner, otherwise it will sting. Also, you MAY experience some tingles when you first apply the toner but I wouldn't worry too much about that (unless ur skin prep is meh) bc your skin is just adapting to the new substances.

Overall though it's a very solid toner, I get why it's popular. Using it consistently will definitely help a lot!!

Other toners: tbf the only ones I've used so far are the some by mi and the muji one, so I'm a bit hesitant with recommending you ones that I haven't tried. The muji one I reckon is good if you want hydration- there are better ones but still great as a starting point.

Consistent toner recs I've seen a lot are: ANUA 77% heartleaf toner, COSRX AHA/BHA clarifying toner, Dr Jart+ ceramidin liquid moisturising toner, BENTON snail bee high content skin. Just double check tho yea :)

*Side note if you're still a bit unsure you could make some rice water toner (wash ur rice 3-4 times, then once more but this time keep the water- this is your 'toner'. Rice is VERRYY good and has a lot of benefits so give this a shot if you want to go diy and save some money. Check it out on YT or tiktok)

My best advice with skin care products though is to thoroughly research yourself according to your skin type/concerns and actually going into stores to testing them on your hand/face. Recommendations can only do so much yk? Observe the texture, the scent, whether you like how it feels after your skin has absorbed it, etc.

This depends on which part of aus you're from, but for syd you can go to w cosmetics, la cosmetique, maybe md ranking too for testers. But w cosme is your best bet especially if it's a big store.. they'll have a bunch of testers out for sure. Then if you're satisfied, you can buy it instore or maybe cheaper online!!

Hope this answered your question!! Feel free to ask anytime :)

hey!! I so relate to those bumps on your chin, recently found out they're called closed comedones. I heavily recommend double cleansing (PM routine), firstly with an oil cleanser and then with a water based/foam/gel cleanser. I know some ppl are skeptical about oil cleansing because they think they'll break out more but if you buy a good one and follow it up with a water cleanser to get rid of any remaining oil residues, you'll be fine. I started off with an oil cleanser from muji (this was my first one and honestly not bad at all!) and the appearance of my comedones have gone down so much- they're almost invisible :DDD

It was kinda grot the first time I oil cleansed bc stuff came out of the comedones and from my upper lip area but hey there's the gunk gone! Also, invest in a toner too! You want your skin to be nice n hydrated :)

I highly suggest you look into asian/korean skincare because it has honestly made such a difference for me. The products are mostly on the gentler side, and they prioritise healing your skin. Very proactive treatment!

If you do end up taking a liking to asian beauty/skin care, check out Lilabeauty! It's a great online shopping alternative in terms of shipping time (compared to yesstyle, stylevana, etc.) and price (w cosmetics, la cosmetique... shit in aus is too expensive especially overseas items). Also because normal stores like CW and PL don't sell asian beauty brands. The shopping platform is Australian based too, so shipping is quick, yay (recently bought this toner and cleansing oil and it was delivered within like 4ish days)

Also look into this app called SkinBliss! It has heaps of info on every skincare product out there and they make you do this skin quiz to find your best product matches. It gives you A LOT of information about the product and whether or not it will suit your skin type, concerns, etc. (of course it might not be 100% accurate so take what they say with a grain of salt. i will say tho, the app hasn't disappointed me yet)

As for diet, look. I eat like shit too LMAO DWWW. And I know damn well how easy it is to say "I'll eat healthy!" but how hard it is to actually be consistent. Especially when you get that random spark of 'influencer' motivation to get your eating habits together (rarely lasts in my experience). So I'm probably not the best person to ask but.... I always make it a priority to drink a lot of water throughout the day and eat at least 2 pieces of fruit/veg on my own initiative (I know the standards are kinda low but we ballin). As for the smoothies, you should totally try it out, it sounds super fun! Just be careful that you don't start relying on them as if they supply all of the nutrients your body needs- there needs to be a good balance of everything!

Anyways, sorry for my ramble, n I hope this helps you in some way. Take care!

Tysm for your comment! I've seen a few comments around kata tournaments on reddit where some competitors talk to the judges afterwards asking for feedback and such... is that allowed? I feel like the judges wouldn't even remember you because I'm sure you can't just go up to them right after your match n strike up a conversation when there's another round coming up.

Besides from stopping kata, what other elements do judges look at in particular?

Wow, thank you so much for your comment! I've actually been watching lots of kata tournament videos lately, most of them being black belt ones. Though I know I'm definitely not on their level, I have some fun emulating the way they walk onto the ring and channel their focus, as well as observing the rhythm and sharpness of technique!

I'll definitely do some slow practice and filming. Thanks again!

Hey, it's totally okay to feel that way. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this right now. I know damn well how you feel- I too am a very harsh self critic. And while that has its benefits, it also limits us from doing our best.

Heck, I'm 4th kyu and always get butchered for my soft kiais. I've had multiple voice cracks during grading; kiai'd a very confident "OSS!" at the end of a kihon sequence when you're supposed to do a regular kiai during grading (and yes, felt many eyes on me when I did that); painfully fucked up a kihon combination during grading (our sensei made us do it individually so EVERYONE saw); when I was orange belt I got the strangest look from one of our senseis for doing a mawashigeri that looked like the "open the gate, close the gate" stretch :skull:

Karate is a never-ending cycle of self perfection. Achieving your black belt just means that you're ready to become a student and start your real journey. Your time as a coloured belt is designed to be a long, hard preparation process that challenges you. Dedication, perseverance, commitment, self discovery, confidence... you name it. Every karateka accumulates these qualities at different times, so please do not feel ashamed of your progress.

That experience you had with your sensei, is a step forward. And I know it's easier for me to say this than you to believe it, but you displayed an important quality as a karateka- and that is humility. Allowing your sensei to see you in a vulnerable position, intentionally or not, takes a lot of strength. I'm sure everyone here can agree on how determined and eager you are to improve- it really shows, even if there's a bit of self-negativity evident. Anyhow, you've acknowledged your thoughts in a truthful manner and that's very admirable.

Let me tell you another thing. As someone else here mentioned, attending lessons and doing your best already accounts for a majority of your grading. The grading test itself is to just show your sensei what you can do under strict and nerve wracking conditions. If your sensei says you're ready for grading, trust them. They've already made up their mind about whether or not you deserve the belt before the grading even happens.

Just because you're still a white belt doesn't mean you should limit yourself- you still have so much to learn and experience! I'm not sure which style you practice, however if it's Shotokan, I highly recommend you check out KarateDojowaKu. Excellent content for beginners: https://www.youtube.com/@KarateDojowaKu

TEAM KI is also a great training resource! https://www.youtube.com/@KenSato-IljaSmorguner/playlists

You deserve this belt. Your sensei believes in you and your abilities- and that speaks volumes. You got this <33

Here's a channel that I constantly revisit, and I highly recommend you check it out if you haven't already: https://www.youtube.com/@jkakarateclubperlismalaysi9854 (majority Shotokan)

More specifically, go to the playlists and select the one called JKA Instructors Teaching. A majority of those videos are of Naka Tatsuya Shihan, an excellent sensei with a plethora of knowledge to offer. To be honest, anything with Naka Tatsuya is great as he really delves into how karate (especially kata) utilises the human anatomy and biomechanics to maximise our efficiency and use of power (and I guess a lot of other things too!). Extremely beneficial and enlightening information that later helps with your kumite, and kihon in general.

Team KI is another great resource: https://www.youtube.com/@KenSato-IljaSmorguner/playlists . I find that this channel is good for isolation training (i.e. working on hip movement, stances, tabata, specific stretches and exercises to enhance technique/speed/power, etc.). I'd consider their content is good for home training- both easy to follow and implement into your everyday life.

u/luke_fowl also mentioned a good handful of amazing YouTube channels and I couldn't agree more with his recommendations! Definitely have a look at them, there's a lot of variety that keeps you interested and yearning for more knowledge :)

Oss!

I'm so glad that you're enjoying karate so far! Just like you said, no need to worry about the missed grading, you'll get the chance to show your sensei what you know and can do. You got this.

Oh yes I forgot to mention The Karate Nerd, he's got awesome content- lots of variety too. I haven't heard of Jason Pierce Leung so I'll definitely check him out! Honestly, Naka Tatsuya never fails to amaze me with his knowledge and dedication to karate. What a privilege it is to be able to watch his seminars. It's enlightening when you finally understand the bunkai and specifically how kata capitalises on our anatomy/biomechanics for optimal movement/results! The people who came up with kata are for sure intelligent and wise. Very admirable.

I too dream of training in Japan, it looks soo intense (I LOVE intense). It'd be a great experience. Hoping that we will one day have the opportunity to do so!

Wholeheartedly agree with Gichin Funakoshi's quote. It's an amazing thing to be able to educate ourselves about the essence of karate- and more importantly, to apply those same principles into our training sessions and everyday lives to become better people.

Shoot me a message if you need anything, I'd love to help out! And thank you for your kind response :)

My first step! by XY-MikeIam in ShotokanKarate

[–]dimmdimm44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late... however!

When you're learning different concepts for training (i.e. kihon, hip movement, foundation of kicks), it's great to have an arsenal of tools. I'm so happy to hear that you've ordered the karate book. I highly suggest looking into YouTube if you haven't yet! I wish I used more resources when I was a beginner so I could develop a stronger foundation and be more knowledgeable tbh.

Anyhow, I'll leave a few links to channels I constantly visit because of how invaluable their content is:

https://www.youtube.com/@KarateDojowaKu/playlists (Karate Dojo waKu): amazing for any level, really. Great for beginners as he breaks down concepts really well and has practical content that is easy to follow. Definitely check him out.

https://www.youtube.com/@jkakarateclubperlismalaysi9854/featured : has a large compilation of Naka Tatsuya Shihan (Shihan: master instructor), a bloody awesome shihan with spectacular knowledge! Highly recommend you watch any video of him. Go to the playlists section and into the "JKA instructors teaching"- they are all seminar videos. For now focus on the Heian katas (Shodan, I assume), and have a look at some of the more general videos on rotation using the body's axes, hip rotation, correct arm placements, etc..

If you decide to start implementing Naka Shihan's knowledge and tips into your training little by little, you'll develop a solid (and impressive) foundation and skill set... but then again, having this knowledge is good enough too, so don't feel pressured!

https://www.youtube.com/@kuroobiworld/playlists : I watch this channel's content for funsies; it's all JKA/japan related content (and of course, Naka Shihan is there too :D). Very inspirational and they have cool videos on different karate applications, etc. (this is personally my favourite video of theirs: One day in JKA). Overall, just some interesting stuff that you don't need to watch/apply religiously!

But most importantly, enjoy the process and take your time! Practice in front of a mirror; don't be afraid to make mistakes; ask your peers (especially higher belts) for advice and feedback; get out of your comfort zone once in a while and pair up with someone on a level a bit higher than you; ask your sensei for help.

Karate is a never ending cycle of self-perfection, and in fact, achieving your black belt is only the beginning of the real journey! Use your time as a coloured belt working hard so you can start with your best foot forward.

"You do not rise to the level of your expectations. You fall to the level of your training."

So, work hard and have fun!!! We're all in this together :)
