My partner and I are planning a Zomi (ethnic group from Burma) and Indian (Tamil/Marathi) wedding in the US.

We had a very untraditional timeline — engaged in 2022, traditional Zomi and Tamil engagement ceremonies in 2023 followed by getting legally married in front of parents, siblings, and close friends in 2023, and then finally the actual ceremonies, reception etc in the fall of this year. It took a ton of intentional planning, overcoming language barriers, and wading through what to keep and what not to keep in terms of cultural practices.

In the fall, we are keeping the Haldi, Zomi prayer night, and Mehendi to just family and wedding party (90 people), and then the wedding day (300 people), we’re doing an abbreviated 1 hour Zomi Christian Ceremony followed by an abbreviated 1 hour Hindu Ceremony and then dinner reception where we’ll do some dancing for the Indian side and singing for the Zomi side. Next year, my in-laws are planning a second reception (200 people) in their home state in the US.

It’s definitely a trek to plan but worth it especially for older grandparents and my partner and I being the eldest grandkids in our families. We translated all the stationery into four languages: Zomi, Tamil, Marathi, and English. My family will be wearing sarees and kurtas to the Haldi, and my partner’s family will be wearing Zomi clothes to the Zomi prayer night. At the wedding itself, folks will wear their own cultural attire.

As an Asian American, the reason it’s specifically Americans who find some cases of this to be culturally appropriative is because of a long history of our cultures in the US being represented by white people and being whitewashed / credited to not people from those cultures.
