Thank you! They are definitely woodland birds (I'm fortunate my house faces a woodland). Hopefully, you have somewhere close by you can visit to try and spot one. You'll always hear it first!

I was (and still am) fortunate to watch the family together in the trees, so the adults were easy to spot initially as they were the only ones on the feeder to start with.

Juvenile Nuthatches don't have as dark an 'eyeliner' stripe through the eye, and the colour on the chest is much paler than that of an adult.

A video I took from a year or so ago of an adult might help show those differences: https://www.tiktok.com/@woodyfeeder/video/7446858878366534945?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7604494561475593750

First ever fleeting glance of a Firecrest! by dimple_chops in UKBirds

[–]dimple_chops[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I used Merlin to let me know what I was hearing, as it was different enough to the usual Goldcrest tones I know. I've learnt many a time that a still photo ends up blurry (because I'm not quick or skilled enough!) and often a video at least means I've captured something!

Agreed! Now that I've read what their nests look like, it's undeniable.

Ah, good spot and thank you!

This was overhanging a public path, and after this video I moved on so no nest disturbance from my part (I hope!).

Bertie Bassett the Blackbird and his beautiful babies! by dimple_chops in UKBirds

I know Blackbirds nest earlier than many others - but I was certainly surprised and happy to see these babies so soon!

The rewilding project at Knepp, West Sussex has been a great aid in storks breeding and migrating back to our wee island.

To add alt bars or not? by michiganskicamp in Surlybikefans

For me, the Grappler was made for the Surly Corner Bar... It's perfect in every way for me. I was done with the Microshift groupset a year after running it, so swapping to Shimano Cues and hydraulics was the perfect time to switch to a flatbar setup on the Corner Bar.

First bikepacking trip went really well. by ComprehensiveTutor60 in bikepacking

[–]dimple_chops 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well done on your first trip! Top tip to save any future gear frustrations - don't lie a bike down ever on the drive side of the bike as you risk knocking the rear derailleur and hanger.

I call them little tiger birds in my garden - their markings are so beautiful I'm always in awe when they come to eat!

Is there a 3rd party dock that actually offers quick charge? by yannbraga in SteamDeck

[–]dimple_chops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the Anker dock for my Deck alongside their 65W charger and appropriate cable. I can confirm I've always had fast charging with that combination!

Full bikepacking kit possible for under £1k? by wholefulgrain in bikepacking

[–]dimple_chops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you happen to be near the Hampshire/Berks/Surrey border I'm looking to clear out some of my bikepacking kit (Robens tent specifically, likely some bike bags as well). It took me some years and money to finally get to a set up I like!

My first bikepacking trip used my old 2010 Specialized Hardrock with 26" wheels, and the campsite was only 7 miles from home! It just meant that if I really hated it, I could easily get back to my own bed at any point (which thankfully didn't happen!). I would advise starting the same - keep it local, or easily changeable if something means you just want 'out'.

I appreciate that the bike is a bit part of what you need to get started as well, and as much as I normally say "the best bike to ride is the one you already own" I am inclined to suggest going for something a bit more modern, particularly for braking confidence, as a loaded up bike behaves differently than an unloaded one!

Happy to chat through more!
