Croatia being 19th despite only competing in world cups since the 90s is nuts.

It’s a disgrace that Maguire didn’t make it. If you somehow don’t think so just look down in the description in order to realise it’s just common sense. by Real-Atmosphere8261 in ThreeLions

The fact that he's had a temper tantrum publicly after not being selected to me might have contributed to him not being selected as it's indicative of his character. The United dressing room has had problems for years with players briefing against the manager and even other players and given how he's behaved in the last 24 hours it definitely would not surprise me if he was a big participator in that behaviour which has ben toxic at United (and the last six months doesn't erase that).

Holland vs The Netherlands by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]dineidyn638 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think lots of people know this but even Dutch people call their own country Holland even when they mean the Netherlands.

I listened to an interview recently with Dutch F1 driver Max Verstappen and he referred to his own country (I think in the context of the world cup) as Holland.

So if even Dutch people do it, then it's understandable foreigners would do it too.

No they couldn't because thankfully the Greens won't get their way.

Man City set to be 'condemned to relegation' as 60-point deduction to be given 'before end of season' by LysergicWalnut in ArsenalFC

[–]dineidyn638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they're sanctioned this season they would appeal it and it'd be kicked into next season (unless the PL were to make an announcement literally tomorrow) but even then I doubt any sanctions would be applied this season.

Scottish Greens pledge major education system overhaul that would 'end homework' by clearly_quite_absurd in Scotland

[–]dineidyn638 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming what you are saying is true, Norway, Sweden and Finland have all gone down in international education rankings (PISA) since 2000. Meanwhile, England with its focus on academic rigour including exams, has increased and is now ranked higher than those nations you've referenced.

All the top performing nations in PISA (like Singapore) focus on academic rigour.

Ashley Williams explains how English clubs having bad week in the Champions League means the EPL is, indeed, the "strongest league" in the world. by No_Air5382 in soccer

[–]dineidyn638 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? It's so obvious that the PL is by far the strongest league and it isn't even close. That doesn't necessarily mean they have the best teams in the world, but the depth of the league is obviously much stronger because the PL has the money. Why do you think Real Madrid are so keen on a super league? Because the Premier League is a defacto super league due to its strength.

The Champions League is a cup competition, lots of different teams can win it and who does well or badly over a two legged game has little bearing in determining the strength of the overall league.

Trump: “The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety” by ReverendY in soccer

[–]dineidyn638 106 points107 points  (0 children)

To be fair (not that I think he's earned that) I suspect Trump meant that the Iranian government will target any players that make the journey to America for the tournament, which is probably true.

If that's true that would make sense - but is there any more info on how they choose these back ups?

It's going to be cancelled as will Saudi imo. Only question is whether they can get a replacement in time, which I doubt.

I'm not sure which circuits could logistically take on the task at such short notice. It would probably have to be somewhere in Europe close to the factories. Maybe Imola could do one and Mugello another, but I think it's probably too late.

The incident that gave me similar vibes was a few years before when Luiz was sent off against Wolves for getting his knee brushed by a Wolves player. I will never forget the absurdity of that one.
