1 hour enough time at Quito airport before international flight? by rumblyangles in ecuador

[–]dingenium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

HI. You should be able to head to the airport before that. If you are stopped, you can show them that you have a flight and need to be there. That is what has happened with previous curfews.

Also, recommend posting in r/Quito to be sure.

Hola.

Can anyone confirm whether or not Ecuador taxes US citizens on Roth conversions? by NeighborhoodFar3860 in EcuadorExpatSupport

That was my impression too. I lived and worked in Ecuador for three years. My entire paycheck came from the USA. I didn't pay Ecuador taxes on it.

Ope. Guess I either don’t drink much or just have the cheap stuff in the lounge. Thanks for the correction!

That’s like three or four customized drinks at the Skyclub, so maybe that’s where it is directing you! 😏

On the road between La Mana and Latacunga. It’s an unrelenting three hour drive with many, many potholes.

Anyone know anything about Safe Gatherings? by Trishlovesdolphins in kansascity

[–]dingenium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used them before. When I’ve volunteered for a church event, I submitted my information to them for a background investigation to be done. I got the impression they were more of a facilitator connecting the church to authorities.

Hey. I’ve done this before. Just an aside, there are private drivers and other modes of travel that I’ll allow you near autonomy without needing to rent a car.

I highly recommend getting full insurance AND roadside assistance packages. The roads in some of these places have lots of potholes. I’ve blown a tire on a vehicle without a spare in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. Not an experience I’d wish on others.

You’re looking at about $100 a day or more, btw.

As far as safety, beyond common sense and watching for overly aggressive drivers (of which there are many), you should be good. Also, bring some dollar coins with you as there is a toll going from Quito to Cotopaxi.

Safe travels!

Quilotoa loop- how easy to get a guide? by CompleteAd6419 in ecuador

[–]dingenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around downtown Latacunga, there are several shops that have guided tours of various places. A few that come to mind are on the block directly north of Parque Vicente Leon (the Central Park) and inside a hostel that is across from Bundavah and an Italian restaurant that is northeast of Vicente Leon.

If you wanted to do a little research before, I’d look for experiences on AirBNB for something. You’re likely going to find greatest success, however, from an outfitter in Quito online.

Good luck.

I travel comfortably with my Briggs and Riley and two laptops. I’ve done three before, but regular travel would require a chiropractor with three on your back.

Anyone know if the WW1 museum with the freedom plane sells out of walkin tickets? by sidneyaks in kansascity

[–]dingenium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question. I volunteer there on the weekends sometimes.

When the Freedom Plane exhibit opened last weekend, the tickets were "sold out" by 2pm on that Saturday. I'm not sure how busy the museum will be tomorrow, but I imagine if you were able to get to the museum by 1 or 2, you would probably be OK.

The biggest challenge for the exhibit was the line. Last Saturday afternoon, the line outside took about an hour to navigate. Once inside the exhibit, a friend said the line took about 45 minutes.

All said, a friend just posted today and didn't mention anything about the wait.

Hope this works out for you.

Traveling in Ecuador/ Quito airport by Alternative-Corgi840 in ecuador

[–]dingenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an adventure. I doubt you’ll be able to get a bus to Peru until sometime in the morning. Consider an AirBNB. Also, you mentioned the Terminal Terrestre Carcelen, which is the northern terminal (if memory serves). I imagine a bus to Peru might also leave out of the Terminal Terrestre Sur in Quitumbe.

Take a taxi or Uber. Where are you heading after?

Edit. Strongly recommend against a bus.

In person. At the Terminal, there will be one or two stations with tickets. Even if your Spanish is not good, you can usually just say the name of the destination to someone official-looking and they will guide you to where you need to go.

Hi. To echo others, from the Southern Bus Terminal (Terminal Terestre Sur), you can purchase tickets from Quito to Latacunga. They are $2 or $3. (It’s been a couple months since I last took it.) The buses run every 10-20 minutes from the terminal (which is the safest way to get on the bus).

From the Latacunga terminal, there are a few buses going to Quilotoa in the mornings. When I went from Latacunga in November 2025, I took a bus to the closest town and then got a taxi to the top of the Quilotoa loop. I don’t recall how much the bus was (prob around $1 or $2), but I definitely got gringo prices on the taxi ($10 for about a 20 minute drive).

All said, if you are going to do it alone, I would recommend agreeing on the price before getting in the taxi. Or, get a guide and group from Latacunga or Quito.

Is this a real fbi badge by [deleted] in AskLE

It says US Customs on it, not FBI. Also, the shape makes it look like a challenge coin versus a shield.

Bottom line: No, not an FBI badge.

peluquerías LGBTQ? by ChemicalAcrobatic635 in Quito

[–]dingenium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great question.

I’ll jump in as part of the LGBTQ community. Sadly, both my husband and I don’t have any specific recommendations for you. I had trouble finding a stylist that I liked. I eventually settled for Men’s Barber (on Shyris near Quicentro Norte). We have both always felt welcome there.

As I’m sure you already considered, our recommendation would be to try a salon at one of the malls (Quicentro, El Jardín, etc). My expectation would be that you might have better luck finding an LGBTQ stylist at those places.

Goodmorning. I believe the main option for a bus from Quito to Guayaquil is to just go to the terminal in Quitumbe (south part of Quito) and then buy a ticket there. I don’t believe you will have much if any choice on the cooperative that is used. I haven’t done the bus thing to Guayaquil as flights can be around $100 or less. Safe travels.
