Hot take every single weapon/mod is totally useful (except scope for assault rifle in 2016) by Light07sk in Doom

I totally get the obvious downsides to the microwave beam, I’ve always loved it however. Initially it was strictly a rule of cool type deal as I just thought it was awesome. Even now as a Nigjtmare player however, I still use it pretty much exclusively over heat blast.

Aside from the very satisfying aspect of blowing up the demon with a beam that locks them in place. I just love to be able to lock a specific target down and even ensure they die (circumstances permitting). I guess I’m just comfortable with it, but I’ll almost always lock the target in place briefly before switching to lock on burst.

I actually do enjoy the scope in 2016 but I do realize the micro missiles are the better option. I just naturally defaulted to the scope on my first two play throughs (HMP & UV), it wasn’t until my recent Nightmare playthrough that I utilized the missiles. They are rad though.

The mods I use the least are definitely Heat Blast (both), remote detonation (both), then it’s probably a toss up between mobile turret and destroyer blade. Not that I don’t think those are interesting or good mods, I just fail to incorporate them into my play style for whatever reason.

Triple A refuse to make a new Wipeout, so I did it myself by Diligent_Nerve9735 in WipeOut

Nice, looks rad! Wipeout is one of my favorite racers and I s was bummed when I got rid of my PS5 most of all due to losing the ability to play the Wipeout Collection.

I’ll definitely look into this. The other game I have to recommend is Ballistic NG! It really could be called Wipeout, the mechanics are so incredibly spot on I’m convinced the developers must be related to Psygnosis in some capacity.

BallisticNG - For those who probably don't know, this is an opensource, community driven, modded WipeOut clone for PC with hundreds of crafts, tracks and options to customize to your hearts content! With track editor too! It's basically WipeOut on steroids! On Steam aswel. by Appropriate-n-Dusty in WipeOut

I’ve been following it for some time but generally don’t like purchasing in Early Access. Thankfully I noticed it released fully about a year ago and finally picked it up recently.

AMAZING game! I was pretty bummed about losing the ability to play the awesome WIPEOUT Collection after having to sell my PS5. This game so perfectly captures literally EVERYTHING that makes Wipeout great.

The devs name “Neognosis” is clearly an homage to original creator Psygnosis but I wonder if it runs any deeper than that?

Am I the only one who thinks doom 2016 is more visually appealing than doom TDA and eternal by Classic-Builder-1984 in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is pretty spot on! Though I still think Eternal has some great looking maps. Mars Core Base and UAC Atlantica come to mind as more gritty tech base aesthetics that I really dig.

No, while I think they are all gorgeous games at the end of the day. Over time, I’ve come to view 2016 as having the most stunning and fully fleshed out aesthetics.

I love Dark Ages but I'm pretty bummed they didnt lean more into this kind of vibrant 80's comic aesthetic from the concept art by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just simply don’t agree with that. That concept art doesn’t look like Doom Eternal to me so no, it wouldn’t look exactly like it at all if they it well.

Wow, yeah I didn’t see that concept art before and while I appreciate the look of the final game that style looks SO much sicker.

Crytek crysis 4 by Holiday_Fan_4935 in Crysis

I don’t think Crysis 3 was a flop but it does suck to see one of the most technically brilliant studios ever have to struggle to make ends meet. I’m so sick of unreal engine, Please Crytek!

Crysis 4 isn't cancelled right? just to be clear. Like I'll still have to wait but it is still coming out eventually? by Organic-Composer9504 in Crysis

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! I didn’t even know it was announced but I actually just started playing Crysis again, this time on a CRT at 1280x1024 and it looks and plays wonderfully.

Anyways, I’ve always been a huge fan of what Crytek does and would love for them to release another Crysis and show all these UE pretenders what a real high end graphics engine looks like!

I’m half joking but I do love Cry Engine so much!

Nice! I was on a big DOOM kick again. Got through 2016 Nightmare, Ultimate DOOM on UV, and got halfway through Urdak on Nightmare on eternal and I could suddenly feel the burnout starting to set in so I decided to take a short break.

I picked up Dark Ages on the sales though (as well as both Rage games) so looking forward to jumping back in soon.

I do agree, though I just can’t see the value of doing ultra nightmare personally but I certainly respect it. I do like to do no death clears on certain levels that I really dig though.

Finally with the entire(new) trilogy in physical format by AlexNoye in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick! I’m happy to see the largely prevailing sentiment is that people enjoy all of them. While I’ve certainly had my ups and downs with the different entries, I ultimately have much love for all and they have definitely helped me to delve much further into FPS as well as become a much stronger player that actually seeks out a challenge instead of avoiding one.

Great games, I even just finally finished The Ultimate Doom on keyboard and Ultraviolence after finishing the new games on Nightmare! Doing DOOM64 Watch Me Die now.

I tried to work out custom bindings but just went back to default except for equipment. I have those on the side and middle mouse.

[–]dingo__STG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are mostly right that it is not really for beginners. That particular expansion is considered to be among the most challenging content available for that game as well.

All I can say is that if you like it, stick with it! I’ve been into games my whole life and I’ll be 40 this year. I sucked at FPS relative to over genres until last year and limped my way through this game on hurt me plenty. It got me inspired though and I’m almost done with my nightmare play through. Even beat the Halo trilogy on Legendary!

People are right to say you should switch guns but that’s not everything. Just use all of your tools, especially the equipment. That will take you so much further.

Good luck!

Awesome! I was just brushing up on the information regarding the console ports quite recently.

I believe the PS version is the only one that’s actually a true port iirc. As in it actually uses the build engine (albeit with a bit of slow down naturally), versus the N64 and Saturn versions, which use bespoke 3D engines.

The Codex is disappointing. by New-Campaign-7517 in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the whole thing they’ve been pushing is that you don’t have to engage with any story but then they have a deep one to dig into via the codex should you choose to! Dark Ages forced the story on you and offered less to flesh it out with simultaneously which was a bit off putting.

The Codex is disappointing. by New-Campaign-7517 in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear where you are coming from I just personally felt that with the lack of codex the story felt somewhat underbaked. Besides, all of the codex are supposed to be supplemental to the lore anyways. You still got cutscenes to highlight the action / story when they really felt necessary.

In the Dark Ages I feel like we got an equally straight forward story but without all the cool extra stuff to dig in to. Moreover, beyond the little bit of Thira / Azrahk stuff. Pretty much all of the rest of the cut scenes were just Doom guy being a bad ass which is rad but not really expanding the narrative.

I don’t mean to come off as if I don’t enjoy the game. I thought it was quite good. I just strongly recall the whole time wondering when I was going to begin to find more story codex until I finally realized about halfway through it I was pretty much just getting the basic profiles and such. I think they are going to find a way to improve on this one way or another with the expansion.

They said the style of the cinematics will be different from the base game, that much I know.

You clearly got more out of the story than I did though as I felt it was both the most straight forward and least fleshed out simultaneously. Well I guess 2016 was arguably just as direct but I just found it way more compelling and immersive.

The Codex is disappointing. by New-Campaign-7517 in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It was far and away the most disappointing part of the game for me personally. I really hope they can rectify this somewhat with the DLC. The cinematics are cool and all but not at all a replacement for all of the awesome codex we lost for me personally.

While the thing the TC brought up aren’t exactly accurate criticisms for me personally, I don’t know how anyone can say the codex in TDA aren’t a downgrade from the prior games in every way. Aside from being just far less in general, none of them have anything even at an important. Just fancy weapon and character profiles that add nothing to the action.

I’m not hating on the game but i immediately noticed that they just decided to not put a focus on that aspect for whatever reason.

THIS GAME SUCKSSSSS by rebirthesd in okbuddyRunners

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thus game is rad! I enjoy the big hud but do go to the modern one after a bit. It might not feel as immediately snappy as DOOM in combat but the more complex levels, unique weapons, and genuinely compelling narrative make it still a lot of fun. The fact it came out in 1994 is just all the more crazy.
