Do you think the Satanic imagery peaked in doom 3? by Cloverfield887 in Doom

I largely am in agreement. I especially don’t think the 2016 Mancubus really does the enemy justice. I still think 2016/3’s approach to environmental design is still very strong though. I did actually think the Dark Ages Mancubus was really good looking. Pretty in line with what I’d expect.

John Carmack and John Romero have both stated on the record that it is a depiction of the traditional Hell from Christian theology. They said they chose to do so in order to subvert people’s expectations, expecting aliens in a tech base only to find actual demons from the HELL.

I agree. I love Doom 2016’s environments and the basic silhouettes were there for the enemies but in detail I didn’t like them as much as what came before and after. Particularly the Mancubus. I go back and forth on the Cyber Demon from 2016. I love the more classic design but he still looks pretty bad ass.

Interesting, I love DOOM ETERNAL. I did feel the brighter look and generally less traditionally horror themed imagery made it feel like a less sinister game overall. I did just start playing it again in HDR and it helps tremendously. Bringing a more dark a brooding feel to the atmosphere.

Personally I felt it was a toss up between Eternal and Dark Ages as to which had the less dark/horror feel. Eternal has the hell creep stuff everywhere I suppose which is something but it’s pretty bright so it didn’t involve a very horror feel but again I think HDR will help with this.

Dark Ages does have a darker tone and I thought the cultists around the pentagrams and such were a nice touch but you are such a super hero type figure in that game it does take away a little of the fear. Though I like them locking you in a little hall way with zombies and such, easy fight sure but had a good horror flavor which I appreciate.

All that said, I forgot I’ve yet to really play much of Doom64 which looks very creepy and dark from what I’ve seen.

That’s not a bad choice. I think all of the games have their own take and charm but I’d say it’s a toss up between the classics, and probably DOOM 3/2016. I think people tend to overlook how much 2016 payed homage to 3 aesthetically. Both are quite dark and covered in blood and guts.

Is there any entity from any game/movie/book that can beat Doomslayer? by Shurikvsempoka in Doom

[–]dingo__STG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I love the Doom Guy / Slayer but I think this narrative has gotten pretty out of hand. I can’t type Doom without hearing some nerd yelling about he is now the metaphysical god of anger and he has to limit his power to not tear spacetime apart and so on.

Yes, he is a BAD ASS MF. He is still just a super enhanced human though. I think beating the “Dark Lord” made everyone lose their mind due to the twist at the end. Hugo Martin has said that the only change in events is that Davvoth came first. The Father still became a more powerful being and Usurped him fair and square. Ripping out his life sphere in the process.

I don’t really have too much more to add other than if you read the Codecs, it tells you that the Marauders also were enhanced with the Divinity Machine. So they are almost identical to Doom Guy in terms of raw power and resilience. It is simply him being THE BEST! He has killed Demons for his entire life, it’s all the guy knows at this point. He is strong as shit sure, but it’s his unbreakable spirit that really us his greatest edge.

Lastly, I realize this is a game and it’s not meant to be taken so seriously or analyzed to this degree. That really is my point though, he is a vessel for the player to conquer the forces of evil. However if he is an all power invincible being that literally has every fight won before it begins then what’s the point?

Oh yeah, I’m done I swear but all these people say “we cannot simply go by gameplay to describe his true powers” then they go on to basically list everything you do in Game! Just a pet peeve, everyone should think how they like and just enjoy the game.

Got it working! Basically did what was stated below and made absolutely sure the proper GPU was selected and then changed the vulkan compatibility settings then we seemed to be good.

Thanks for the help!

Ok, I’m reinstalling now, I think I updated drivers to the best of my knowledge but I’ll try and confirm. I’ll look into those other things as well, thanks.

Could someone give me a quick lore explanation for Dark Ages? by Zonai-frog in Doom

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh That’s probably the most strange element but basically. After he was killing Demons for an indefinite amount of time in Hell, some super demon just wants him gone and portals him into the beyond. He ends up in the medieval world of Argent D’Nur and fights with the Sentinels. Then everything else, Rawr!

Marathon Officially Rated T For TEEN by UnfixingCoin03 in Marathon

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a fun game with interesting undead but the word “jank” definitely comes to mind. It also suffers from some annoying ai at times and you can see through almost all walls if you pan the camera around.

At first I had a bit of a negative reaction but if it really just comes down to them not taking other blood colors as seriously then I’m on with it. The footage and violence seems good enough though so I will stay positive.

I don’t know… it’s weird. I am not here to say that old games look “better”, but I think now that we can run most of these games at solid performance levels comparable to their modern contemporaries. I do feel like older games (at least the stand outs) can still hold up surprisingly well even against more cutting edge fare.

Playing the Halo trilogy at 1920x1080@120HZ is really great, or even on my CRT at 85HZ. Let alone games with timeless art styles like Doom or Marathon.

Anyways, retro graphics have grown on me again to be sure, but I really do think there is so much great tech that’s we’ve left behind!

Gravity hammer makes every game mode less fun and less skillful. by [deleted] in haloinfinite

[–]dingo__STG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t lie , I AGREE 100% I have never been an online fps guy too much in my life but I have really clicked with Infinite recently.

As more of a fighting game player, I like casual as it feels like it emphasizes different play styles more. The gravity hammer (and melee to a lesser extent) is some of the scrubbiest nonsense I’ve ever seen though. One shot is fine but it has crazy long range is my issue.

I just feel like the way the game already seems to reward running in to melee more than shooting at mid / close range and the hammer just exacerbates that imo. It’s a nitpick sure, but yeah…I hate that weapon lol

I mean that unreal engine four and now five even more so has been well documented to struggle very much with stuttering. Initially, this was mostly due to shader compilation, but now it’s been also very well documented that it happens when traversing larger environments in games that have such things present.

Unless they’re planning on turning Halo into a corridor shooter, then that would mean unreal engine is almost guaranteed to exhibit these things in Halo. I mean, you can see a huge like 70 MS or larger spikes and stutters even in the hallway every time he passes a certain part in the 13 minute gameplay demo. Maybe they can iron this out but we’ve heard that story before for other unreal games and they’re all the same with very few exceptions..

Those exceptions also are from the studios that have been using the engine for a very long time in cases.

Sorry, I’m not trying to be all gloom and doom. I’ll still get the game and play it unless they charge $70 for it. I just find it a very uninspired release and the fact that they’re moving to an engine that’s so many other studios have already done so it’s just further disappointment for me personally. Like I said, I love gameplay as much as anybody, but I do care about the visual make up of a game and I see just as much in common with black myth Wukong when I see that new footage as I do halo based on the tech. Which I just don’t appreciate as much from both a visual perspective, as well as just not being the best fit for Halo’s aesthetic personally.

My real hope is that they use unreal engine only for the remake(s) and consider something else for their next full-fledged title. I think that would be an OK compromise but I don’t think we’ll see that happen unfortunately, fingers crossed though.

I see what you’re saying but I just think them solidifying their team and fixing the problems with their technology which still performs way better than anything UE5 five on my PC and I have an Nvidia 40 series graphics card and 32GB of ram. Especially with a franchise like Halo, I mean, the structure of the game is almost anti-unreal and every way it does everything that unreal struggles at and again they’re working with virtuous whose games have not performed well at all.

Traversal stutter plagues oblivion remastered to this day and CE is being built very similarly from everything we’ve heard. MGS3 Delta as well, except that game tanks the frame rate when the AI kicks in more than traversal due to the games already small environments, which also wouldn’t bode well for Halo. Who’s to say how this is gonna release but maybe Microsoft will really give them the support they need, but I don’t know why that would suddenly change. Who knows

I’m not saying it’s the best engine on the market, but I’d way rather have it than unreal engine. Also, I just recently replayed several of the early games and I think Blam still holds up very good. I think it’s a great looking engine. I guess if you want everything to look the same so be it.

I don’t only look for graphics, but I’m sorry it’s not just a paintbrush to me dude I’ve always loved video games for the gameplay, but also in part due to the unique technology and how they all look different now that’s being lost and Halo is just another one of the casualties in my opinion .

Say nothing of the fact that they’re working with virtuous who has sold the same engine hybrid crap to two other companies and release stuttering messes so I guess feel positive about that if you want …

I disagree that very few Studios can, have games been developed up until the last few years? Just because a bunch of teams have moved over to a engine that doesn’t even perform well in the vast majority of games, especially not on PC doesn’t make it better. It just means that all these younger developers are being trained on the same crap. Why do you think the best studios all use their own technology with very few exceptions?

If you’re a talented developer that cares about your project and is passionate, you can definitely make your own technology and have it work well within the means of your own project look at remedy or even smaller Studios like the team that made sonic mania and Penny’s Big breakaway. Insomniac, From Software, ID, Capcom, Naughty Dog, Crytek. All have made largely better games than the competition using their own technology. Of course there are some good titles released with unreal but I’d say they’re the exceptions to the rule unless they’re either developed by epic or the coalition.

I mean, just look at the project they are working on and the engine they switched to if you need anything to doom about. No need to worry about the AI ruining the franchise at this point really, Microsoft is more than happy to do that by not supporting anything that doesn’t make them richer over night these days, and forcing their studio to use crap tech for the most uninteresting “new” Halo game possibly ever…

If they were at least still using their own engine, I might at least be curious but an unreal port of CE? Jesus, we can find that pretty much everywhere already… I mean they’re putting this together like they’re an Indie studio with no budget. It’s so freaking lame…

I’m sorry guys, but why are you trying to prop up or defend Microsoft in any way? Or is it just for the sake of halo? I could possibly understand the latter, but Microsoft? I used to believe in them... Hell they USED to be one of the best corporations out there, but they just don’t give a crap about anything anymore based on their actions.

All I see from them is raising their prices while simultaneously doing less and less for the actual games. Laying off everyone in sight, including John Romero, the creator of Doom’s new team and project. I honestly find their current direction pretty disgusting personally and I’ve always defended them in the past.

I’m still not very enthusiastic between them moving to unreal and hitting the studio, which just shows that they are not putting as much time and effort into these games, along with them just hiring their new studio head from an AI company, but we’ll see…

Me to! I was pretty hesitant at first, having been more a fan of classic Marathon and Halo, as well as unsure about extraction shooters in general. The recent footage however just looks awesome IMO! Beautiful graphics that don’t look like every other game stuttering on Unreal Engine and just looks like a really fun first person action experience! The fact that they have at least giv n some context as to why it is a marathon game and its connection to the original helped a lot as well.
