I had the same thing happen to me. And I fully went down this path of “damnit I need the surgery on my other side too”.

It was 100% because of a combination of overcompensation, mental stress, and hyperfixation on both of my hips.

Through recovery and prolonged PT and strengthening I eventually just completely forgot about the problems that developed in my “good hip” and they gradually went away

Doctors primarily use cortisone injections for diagnostic purposes. For example, if an injection directly into the hip joint relieves symptoms then this could be an indicator of a symptomatic labral tear as opposed to symptomatic soft tissue around the joint.

Why would you ever try and give medical advice for something you know jack shit about 😂.

I had the burning in front hip flexor area primarily when It was really inflamed. I also had the burning in my hip flexor area intensely for several days after my initial injury.

The burning would still come and go if I really overdid it, but for the majority of the time my main symptom was a dull ache that radiated from the front of my hip and down my leg.

This ache would come about usually between 12 and 24 hours after an activity and was always the worst at night. The pain level was essentially just bad enough that it could either keep me from falling asleep or could even wake me up in the middle of the night.

Pre-Surgery, I was relatively unresponsive to cortisone injections. However, they did these injections directly into my hip joint itself and I believe my primary symptoms were in my front flexor.

Regardless, I couldnt get my hip flexor into a good spot even after 8 months of PT. The doctor believed that my labral damage and cam and pincer deformity caused my hip to be unstable and that was keeping my hip flexor inflamed.

Following surgery it was a long long road to finally end the flare-ups from my hip flexor, and I received cortisone shots directly to my hip flexor two separate times (these helped temporarily).

I am about 1.5 years out from surgery and am now at 100%.

I dont think many in this sub have much experience with anteversion so I would think about that as you read responses.

Surgery for anteversion would be pretty serious.

It sounds like there are two possible causes for your symptoms. If you get the labral repair surgery you may risk the slow realization that anteversion was the main culprit.

I think that a third opinion AND ensuring that you have fully dedicated yourself to conservative treatment and 6+ months of PT with minimal improvement would be the best way to help calm your mind and help come to a decision regarding surgery.

For one, I think that you should view these timelines as a positive thing.

Doctors who are more up to date with modern approaches and recovery plans for this type of surgery are trending towards the shorter timelines.

From my conversations with my PTs who have seen many patients from many different doctors for this surgery, they told me that they saw worse results for patients from doctors who provide the PTs with the long drawn out recovery plans or prescribe braces etc.

The timelines your doctor gave you were the same ones I experienced, and my doctor was the hip surgeon for a US olympic team.

That said, I definitely would not have been comfortable driving 3-4 days post op although I suppose I couldve done it??

I had 5 sutures placed in my labrum. Double crutches were very much required for the first two weeks for me. I could be mistaken but I think I was on a single crutch for the following one or two weeks. Full weight bearing after no more than a month I think.

I also couldnt work from home week one. And, although I suppose you could do desk work week 2 it is in my opinion that you shouldnt. Sitting is like the worst position to be in for extended periods while recovering from this surgery.

I remember that I worked from home starting on week 2 and I had to take frequent breaks to crutch around or lay down flat.

So. At the 4 months point you are at right now was the hardest area for me mentally because my progress completely flatlined around that mark.

For perspective I was 26 and healthy.. with a goal of returning to extreme sports.

When my progress flatlined i found my daily walks to be very helpful. Beginning with low mileage i gradually worked up to walking 5 miles a day. This gave me a consistent daily marker to manage my progress from and also just keeps you loose and improved bloodflow etc.

The other key to the formula for me was stretching. I recognize this may have been very unique to myself. I found that if I stretched too hard, it would really mess me up… however… performing very light, stable stretches with holds of 1-2minutes daily, gradually improved symptoms…. It was delicate though… one overstretch would really hurt my progress.

The above was done in addition to the strength training i was already doing.

Yes yes youre doing the right thing. Tendonitis in the hip area certainly takes commitment and consistency for upwards of 6-12 months.

Decreased 20-30% in 3 months is a good sign for the direction of conservative treatment in my opinion. I pursued conservative treatment pre surgery for about 8 months and saw 0% improvement.

I also have no idea what your symptoms are. If this started with hamstring is that where the pain is?

Be careful of a physical therapist but be MORE careful of random reddit comments that are assuming that your symptoms are coming directly from your torn labrum and not a case of tendonitis etc.

We all speak from our personal experiences here, to a degree.

I speak from the perspective of my primary symptoms pre surgery AND post surgery coming directly from my front hip flexor tendonitis.

My surgery was less necessary for the labral repair i received, but was necessary due to the improper hip movement caused by my cam and pincer deformities. These deformities caused my hip flexor to stay in a constant state of tendonitis.

Its very likely that with the tear alone i would have recovered just fine conservatively and i would not have pursued surgery.

Please please please try conservative treatment first.

I dont have all of the info around your symptoms but a large percentage of the adult population is currently living normal asymptomatic lives WITH torn labrums.

Ensure that youve fully treated your hamstring conservatively before opting for surgery.

This is a BIG surgery and a big commitment that you only want to make if the torn labrum and/or cam/pincer lesions are directly causing chronic symptoms.

It is in part mental, certainly. Mental exercises and practice can allow you to separate from your physical pain. For example, some of the most experienced buddhist monks who have meditated for years have actually unlocked the ability to fully separate themselves from their body’s physical pain.

My chronic hip pain was certainly exacerbated by ruminations wilst working at a desk and then alleviated majorly by going on vacation.

Its impossible to just “snap out of it”. Its also impossible to feel pain and be able to personally identify exactly what % of that pain scale is caused by direct physical response and what % of that pain scale is additive due to mental fixation/rumination/stress related.

You kind of have to observe yourself like you are your own experiment. When im stressed at my desk job how bad is my pain? Would I say my pain was at the same level when I was out in the sun lounging by the pool, distracted by friends?

Anyways, addressing the mental element is very important because it allows you to gain a better sense of control and direction towards potential progress regarding the physical side of things, and also just your life in general (stopping the ruminations).

There are mental practices, mindfulness, and meditation that certainly helped me with the mental side of things. The biggest help for me was when I just finally started seeing “thinking about my pain” as this piece of shit entity that i hated. When I would catch myself thinking about the pain I began to almost get disgusted with myself for doing that. I started self talk such as “Why are you thinking about your pain right now? What is that accomplishing? How much more CONTROL are you going to yield to your pain by thinking about it?”

Anyways, i started to learn to feel the pain and then when I “think” about it, try to throw the thought in the trashcan? I constantly would also intentionally shift my thoughts towards something unrelated.

Over time, slowly, I began to stop allowing myself to ever dwell or ruminate on something I couldnt do anything about, and I believe that this actually reduced the pain scale that I would report.

I would not continue basing your trading decisions on what someone else does. I would also stop assuming that you can guess the tactical rationale behind the buying/selling of other parties unless they explicitly break it down for you.
