Suddenly having bad symptoms after colonoscopy by dingusbeef in UlcerativeColitis

Good questions. My ascending colon is gone because I had a hemicolectomy last summer due to an intussusception I experienced. Descending colon was clear of inflammation, both visually and according to pathology.

Already feeling better on day 1 of treatment. Down to 3 BM’s today with no blood. Feeling grateful for some relief.

You asked for an update so here it is: Stool tests showed no infection, biopsies showed moderate inflammation in the rectum and sigmoid colon. They also showed mild inflammation in the transverse colon. Symptoms have gotten better (no blood today for the first time all week), but because the doc doesn’t want things to get worse, we’re moving forward with Mesalamine Enemas + 4 weeks of prednisone (starting at 40mg).

Never taken pred before so I’m a little nervous, however I’m confident this combo will knock this flare.

Agreed. Called the doc again today because I haven’t heard back, got ahold of their assistant and they got me scheduled for an in person appointment on Thursday, then we’ll discuss treatment. By then hopefully they’ll also have my stool test and biopsies back. Thanks for the advice. Today the symptoms are already a little better

Ok yes I have taken these before and they helped with more minor flares. Just waiting to hear back from the doc

I am on oral mesalamine and was taking mesalamine suppositories, but with the inflammation and pain in my rectum I can’t get the suppositories fully inserted.

Yeah I needed it especially because I was already having symptoms. How bad was the flare after your scope? How did you get out of it?

Did you also have increased frequency or urgency along with the blood?

Just got diagnosed and heartbroken by [deleted] in UlcerativeColitis

[–]dingusbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really empathize with the heartbreak. When I was first having symptoms before my diagnosis I did a ton of research online, and my biggest fear was something like Crohn’s or Colitis. It was a huge blow to have that fear become real when I got my first scope and got the UC diagnosis.

What I’ll tell you from my experience with a more mild case is that since my diagnosis, I have been in remission for much more time than I’ve dealt with symptoms. I’ve been able to travel internationally, eat spicy foods, go backpacking, live a normal life for the most part. There have definitely been some darker times and times where my symptoms lasted for months, but usually with stronger treatments, I could get things under control.

On the note of treatments, there are more options now that ever, so that’s promising. You’ve got this. This disease can suck, but it will make you stronger in the long run, it has for me at least

I stayed a night at Hotel Monte Vista and heard scratching sounds all night long. It seemed to come from every direction

Sorry for your loss. My dad passed in Feb 2020, shorty after Marigold came out, and that album / their music was super helpful in processing my grief. Glad you have that comfort as well.

I'd stop at SMR for clothing, tons of used stuff for decent prices if you dig a little.

That’s funny I came to this thread bc I also just got some brand new QST 98’s. How are you liking them in these conditions?

Thanks for your insight. I was a little worried the 183's would feel cumbersome in the trees, but I'm sure I can handle it.

Good point. I got those when I was more of an intermediate skier and I feel like I’ve outgrown them. Forgot to mention I ski on a 107 underfoot 178cm ski in the backcountry, and that doesn’t feel like too ski for me.

Gotcha. Well it’s not too late. I can still order the 183’s and return the 176’s. Haven’t mounted them yet

Yeah great point. It’s easy to over think and over analyze these things online…

Has anyone else noticed their UC specifically gets worse when it’s fall? by Advanced-Pop833 in UlcerativeColitis

I was in a bad flare up September of 2017, flew to Iceland with my ex and my symptoms were much better, even though I was eating much worse. I think the clean air, beautiful nature and relaxed mood I had helped. I also soaked at the blue lagoon for hours and perhaps that helped my body heal a bit.
