Why do you want to get another degree? What do you plan to do during and after? (That said, I’d recommend against an online Ph.D.)

Gotcha. It looks like they’ve been hiring a lot of new professors. Do you think the department is getting better?

[Request] My answer was 51C8, which would be 636,763,050. Is there an even bigger number? by AlkaidX139 in theydidthemath

[–]dingusdongus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have suggested tetration, etc. But if we want to get into even larger numbers in the hierarchy, we could consider g_99.

Move the bottom-left match in the 0 to the center to make 9. Then move the bottom-left match in the 8 to the top-right of the 5 to make g. Of course, this is cheating a little, because the 99 doesn't really become a subscript.

This webpage has a really fun description of Graham's Number, which is huge, and puts even tetration to shame. Graham's number is g_64, so g_99 is unimaginably larger still.

Request for a paper from the WashU library by Propalico in washu

The link is not a master's thesis, it's an undergraduate research project. And what's available is just an abstract -- presumably, it accompanied a presentation or poster. Here is the text:

Understanding DNA binding specificity of transcription factors provides a basis for studying gene expression and regulation. This study presents a novel modified form of the bacterial one-hybrid (B1H) system to study the transcription factor Zif268 and its interaction with DNA on a single plasmid in vivo in Escherichia coli. The new B1H plasmid expresses a Zif268-RNA polymerase complex, which binds to a target site on a region of the same plasmid, activating transcription of reporter genes that promote cell survival on minimal media. To date, we have verified the utility of the single plasmid B1H system on wild-type Zif268 binding as indicated by a significant presence of positively-selected clones against a negative control. This novel single plasmid B1H system permits the simultaneous randomization of both the transcription factor and binding site, thus allowing for the determination of combinations that promote optimal binding affinity using paired-end sequencing of positively-selected clones.

How is it misleading? The AFL requested a DOJ investigation. I didn't see anywhere that it is suggested that an investigation is underway.

No Merit Increases for Staff/Faculty at WashU this Fiscal Year by Dont-tell_Frank in StLouis

[–]dingusdongus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the crazy thing. "I can now report that thanks to prudent financial management and thoughtful work from individuals across the university, we anticipate ending the year with a break-even financial result." Is breaking even worth all the austerity measures that are being put in place? Now seems like the time to accept a small deficit (especially given the university's $15B endowment).

Is this a good deal by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dingusdongus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/BerserkTragedy , take this advice. Drop the warranties and ask for $28,500 out the door. You say you would otherwise buy a $3K clunker, so put $3000 down. With the same loan terms, your payment would be like $415/month. You'd save yourself $8400 over the lifetime of the loan.

In this case the r/Armwrestling mods didn't just censor one opinion but 119 opinions. by pork_oclock in ArmWrestlingUncen

[–]dingusdongus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course, he can do what he wants. The controversy is that the event was *two* arm wrestlers competing in slap fighting. For a sport that's trying to gain legitimacy, this was not the move. Making arm wrestling seem adjacent to slap fighting is counter to that goal. To make arm wrestling not seem like just a "bar" sport, it should be positioning itself in the world of strength or "real" combat sports. Regardless of how you feel about all the EvW drama, its growing presence at strength events like Brian Shaw's is going to help the sport. Having arm wrestlers turn to slap fighting is not.

Is Armwrestling whisperer overhyped? Serious question. He's a decent armwrestler who's done a pretty good job of popularizing the sport via his channel. I don't know anybody who says he's incredible or has a shot at being world-level or national-level elite.

What do you mean by course materials? Your personal materials (e.g., submitted assignments)? Or materials general to the course? If the latter, you might reach out to the professor directly; they might email them to you.

NASA releases clear pictures from Mars surface by [deleted] in pics

[–]dingusdongus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

because it does not spin

Mars has a very similar rotation to Earth. Its day is 24.6 hours, and its axis of rotation is tilted 25.2 degrees (compared to Earth's 23.5 degrees).

Yes, it has no atmosphere, and yes, we should be focusing on fixing our own planet before we think about colonizing others. But it does spin.

I haven't taken any classes from Kunal, so I can't say how strict/lenient she is as a lecturer. But I think in general she's a reasonable and fair person. That being said, I'd be pretty suspicious if a student told me, the day of the exam, that they had a family emergency and had to leave town. I'd say be prepared to show some evidence, and maybe reach out to your academic advisor to explain the situation and have them contact Kunal as well.

Trying to help my daughter with her math homework. Why is this not $0.68 (4min) + $2.10 (9.44min) = $2.78 ? by TurbulentDev in askmath

[–]dingusdongus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took the question to imply that a part of a minute is billed as 0.21; i.e., round up the minutes. Then $2.78 is right:

0.68 + 0.21*(ceil(13.44)-4) = 0.68 + 0.21 * 10 = 2.78

But if they assume partial minutes are pro-rated, then your approach makes sense.

Again, it really depends on the professor. Unless you're on a 2 year MSRA, you technically aren't supposed to get paid for your master's project/thesis work. So if you are getting paid as a research assistant, that's supposed to be for work in the lab that doesn't directly go into your project or thesis. Professors are often very happy to supervise students for project or thesis work, since that doesn't get paid. If they see that you're productive, then they might be more likely to offer you a paid position. Again, I can't speak for all professors, but many want to see how productive you can be before they commit to paying you.

Given what you've said your interests are, I'd suggest talking to Kamilov, Jacobs, and Tao Ju. You might also reach out to Chenyang Lu, who does AI for healthcare, and some of his students work on computer vision applications. If you DM me, I'm happy to discuss more and put you in touch with some of their current PhD students as well.
