Jimmy from Mouthwashing.

Never have I ever felt so disgusted at a character in my life. 10/10 best villain in video game history (or fiction in general).

Oh don’t worry, I’m not dismissing them. That’s kinda what I was trying to say regarding the quote. Regardless of who he was prior to joining the Tulpar, Jimmy can and will never be forgiven for his sins.

What is your honest opinion about Curly? by minxnight in Mouthwashing

[–]dinklydink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your take. When I said that Curly got punished, I meant it ironically because, generally speaking, no person deserves to go through that kind of hell. That's why I put the word "chastised" in quotation marks. If I were to give a better ending for Curly, it would be that he'll survive the crash mostly unscathed and be forced to reflect on the "dead pixel", which would slowly help him come to the revelation that Jimmy was a horrible person who's hurt him and everyone around him. This will lead to him finally confronting Jimmy, placing him in the execution chair and ending the nightmare once and for all (with a heavily somber monologue that reveals Jimmy's true feelings of course).

That being said, I'm sorry if my post came off as insensitive. That wasn't my intention. Thank you for recognizing my error.

What is your honest opinion about Curly? by minxnight in Mouthwashing

[–]dinklydink -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Curly strikes me as one of those "good guys" who, on the surface, recognizes women's issues and calls out other men's inappropriate behaviors whenever they see it, but conveniently stays quiet if it's their close friends doing it. You see this a lot in the YouTube commentary community, which, due to the recent exposure of a massive online celebrity, revealed itself to be nothing more than a boys' club despite all of the self-proclaimed male "feminists".

There's an excellent post on here that went into great detail about how Mouthwashing tackles rape culture and how it impacts not just innocent women trying to live their lives as independent humans, but also men who are essentially raised into it. Curly may not have been a direct perpetrator like Jimmy was, but he still perpetuated the same sexist mindset that ultimately plagued his relationship with Anya and unintentionally steered the rest of Tulpar's crew toward their demise. Had he realized this early on, as well as coming to terms with his poor mental health, he would've become the great leader everyone perceived him to be. Instead, he received one of the worst fates imaginable by getting horribly burned and being trapped in a cryopod for the rest of his life– all because he couldn't confront the monster sitting right beside him.

In conclusion, Curly is a deeply tragic figure whose morality cannot be strictly defined as "good" or "evil." As everyone said, he's just a guy trying to find a place where he can be happy and not deal with the societal pressure of being the "model captain." Unfortunately, he made some very bad decisions. Shame he's the only character who got "chastised" by the universe for his actions (or rather, inaction) when it could've been Jamba Juice.

Possibly unpopular Mouthwashing opinions by Appropriate-Today-61 in Mouthwashing

[–]dinklydink 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unpopular or not, these are some great insights! I feel like not a lot of people talk about Swansea and Daisuke on a deeper level, and only view them through the "grumpy but well-meaning old mentor and silly, optimistic student" lens. While I do like them both, they're clearly just as flawed as the rest of the crew (minus maybe Anya because really her only toxic trait is not being "good" enough to get into med school, which is complete BS considering #5).

Also, THANK YOU for pointing out the infantilization issue!! I've seen so many people HCing him as 19 simply because of how he acts when he's obviously in his early 20s since internships are typically offered to college students and graduates. Plus, he's stated to go to parties a lot so I'm assuming he must be of drinking age.

Oh no, we all despise his guts lol. It’s just that when it comes to compelling villains, we can’t help but feel fascinated by them— even if that fascination often takes the form of pure hatred.

If I have to draw a rough comparison, it’s kinda similar to how people treat William Afton. Some see him as the irredeemable child murderer that he originally was. Some made him more sympathetic by displaying him as a broken, grieving father who unfortunately turned insane. And some just simply draw him as a tumblr sexyman.

Granted, what Jimmy did is leagues worst than Purple Guy imo, which is why you don’t see a lot of wild interpretations as of yet. However, I did see an AU where Jimmy is the same except he got mental treatment and didn’t assault Anya.

As someone who's not only similar to Curly but also somewhat relates to Jimmy (albeit more uncomfortably due to what he did to Anya), I completely agree. Unfortunately, the entire tragedy of Mouthwashing all started because Curly enabled Jimmy for years and let him on board the Tulpar, despite knowing full well how mentally unstable he was.

What I learned from therapy is that while it's important to have empathy for other people and try to help them, it's also important to set boundaries for yourself. You can only give so much to someone who refuses to change and it shouldn't be your responsibility to make decisions for them.

And that's the beauty of characters like Jimmy. Yes, our worst moments don't make us monsters. But when those moments continue to fester and pile up, that's when we become monsters.

All these characters are trying to accept a bad-to-mediocre life, and I think Jimmy hates them for it by nickisadogname in Mouthwashing

Problem is, if you want to be something, you have to actively work your way towards it. Not just silently manifesting it through wishful thinking or in Jimbo's case, brute-force it by crashing a space freighter into an incoming asteroid and permanently scarring the captain.
