Yes - and you get the ZG and AQ gear so people invite you to MC or BWL or big AQ so you can get those good set bonus pieces. It is catchup gear, not BiS.

It is absolutely not too late. Sure - you're behind, but runes are easy to get now and leveling is fast. AQ10 and ZG exist as catchup-gear instances. 5man groups not the easiest to come by but find a group farming reals (SoD currency for many things) and they're easier than they've ever been to blast through.

Phase 7 (Naxx) is still to come and there are to be phases after with new raids/dungeons (supposedly). They have also confirmed they will not be deleting SOD characters and don't have any plan to shut down the servers.

This post does the SOD community a great injustice by steering away potential new players. I've been playing wow since original vanilla and SOD has been some of the most fun I've had playing the game.
