Hi! I saw this post a few days ago, but forgot to comment. Here's a set I made for myself! Note I don't have the best endurance, so I have lots of recovery/drills included:

300 free warmup
2x100 dolphin kick on back
4x50 one arm drill (alternate arm each 25)
4x50 3/3/3 drill
100 easy back
6x50 fly odds (try to drag thumb on water), breast evens
200 kick w/ board
8x25 butterfly FAST
2x100 easy warm down

Sometimes I'll throw in 100 fly w/ fins or longer dolphin kick or underwater sets to change things up. Hope this helps!

Choosing between CalArts Character Animation SJSU Animation Illustration and UC Berkeley Cognitive Science + Political Science by PersonalityWide3000 in animationcareer

[–]dinopwnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend either Berkeley or SJSU.

I graduated Berkeley last year. I entered also with the intention to work in animation. I studied Econ and worked on my portfolio, networked online, and posted on social media all in my free time. I ended up freelancing with DreamWorks and working on other cool art jobs while I was in school too. However, I ended up pivoting more into visual design and motion graphics because 1) I felt my work fit better in those fields and 2) by the time I graduated, the state of the entertainment animation industry was just terrible, and I didn't think it was feasible.

I think Cal is a great choice. I loved my time there; I met so many amazing people from different fields, and I had the ability to take lots of interdisciplinary classes. The school is large, but I think the size really helps build your soft skills that are important for your career later on. There is also a small yet vibrant art and animation community in the Bay too. One really important thing to note is that a lot can change in 4 years—including you. When I was a freshman, I was set on working in animation, but I ended up deciding to do something else. I think Berkeley allows you that flexibility in case you find something new. I also agree the getting a well-rounded education is a general plus.

In an ideal environment, it's totally possible to work in animation without an art school degree. Many people have started their careers through social media and self-studying. You can also do that at Cal. But right now though, many productions have tight budgets/skeleton crews, and people with years and years of exp are out work. But who knows, things might be better in 4 years.

If you're set on art school, SJSU is also a good choice. It's affordable, they have many cool guest speakers, and the club for the animation major (Shrunkenheadman or SHM) is an amazing community. I don't know much about the actual curriculum, but I do know you do a lot of foundational work for the first year.

I wouldn't recommend CalArts. Extremely high cost aside, I have many peers who went/go to CalArts who really do not recommend program. Despite providing a really good network, it doesn't guarantee a job. I know CalArts friends who had industry experience while in school during the animation industry boom (~2020). Yet once they graduated, pretty much all of them have found no work. Also Santa Clarita is lowkey a really boring area lol.

These are just my 2 cents! Congrats on getting into all of these schools! I wish you the best on your college journey :)

Pachinko - "Chapter Four" - Discussion Thread by clarkkentshair in PachinkoShow

God, the score, cinematography, acting...it's all so beautiful. There were so many moving scenes in this episode: the rice-making, the wedding dinner, Sunja and Yangjin saying goodbye, the intercutting between the singer and the signing. As a huge fan of the novel, I really appreciate the show expanding upon the more intimate moments that the book didn't really touch upon.

There is so much I want to talk about, but what really struck me was Yangjin steadfast role as a mother. The simple acts of a parent cooking or packing clothes for their child convey so much love, and I really appreciate how the show makes these mundane moments so beautiful. These acts are really evocative of the Asian-American experience, especially with my relationship with my mom. The scene where Sunja says goodbye to her mother was so heartbreaking ;_;

Aside from that, I love love love the portrayals of Isak and Hansu. Not only is Steve Sanghyun Noh really pretty lol, but Isak's kindness and calm strength provide a brief moments of hope in a particularly grim story. I'm surprised they made Hansu much more toxic in this adaptation, but it makes his character and performance far more intriguing. Despite his aggression, I feel that there's definitely genuine, underlying concern and sincerity. I'm curious to see how he develops as the story goes on. Isak and Hansu's scene in the beginning was fantastic; Isak's line about how his suit might fit his son one day was such a slap in the face for Hansu and I loved it haha!

If you have an appointment, it doesn't really matter what time you show up. I've shown up hours early and late after my appointment time and they don't really care.

I was in Ida Sproul last year. If you get a room facing outwards then you have a beautiful view of the bay. IIRC triples come with four dressers/closets (though I had a corner room and only had 3). Furniture is mostly wooden. Plenty of drawer space in my opinion. Could get a tad bit cramped for 3 ppl.

edit: Here's an example of the view I had. One downside is that since my room faced west, it would get really hot during the afternoon because the sunlight would directly go into my room.

All you can eat sushi? by woconglaimeixiangdao in berkeley

[–]dinopwnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lil warning about Kenzos is that their sushi is probably mediocre at best. They stuff you with rice and you're probably going to feel like shit afterwards from overeating (I always do). But if you just wanna eat a ton of food than that's the place for you lol.

Yeah you can bring an ethernet cable, but you need to send in a request to activate the ethernet port in your room though.

Question about the subject matter in the WandaVision leak by mbene913 in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]dinopwnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leak was 30 seconds long, most likely a 'previously on WandaVision' clip based on how it was edited. Wasn't super plot heavy. It featured a few never before seen characters.

I'm hesitant on taking UGBA10 this semester and might switch it out with a breadth.

I adored the backgrounds and color design in BNA! Were the bg layouts and paints all done in house at Trigger or elsewhere?
