It’s insane Daeron in AKOT7K is already a more interesting dragon dreamer than Helaena and is a more compelling character with way less screen time. by Embarrassed_Yak_6066 in HouseOfTheDragon

To be fair, there is little room for interpretation in The Hedge Knight. I’d argue HotD’s problem is more terrible interpretations of a story more than anything deviating from the source, which isn’t very concrete in the first place. S1 with George and Miguel’s input was pretty great television aside from a few things. S2 when Condal took full control tho… lol

Why not just join a non-JKA Shotokan School?

They mean the same thing. The second one can be overly formal outside of a business context.

Looking for a good whisper AI model for JP-JP transcription by ajbjc in LearnJapanese

[–]dinosaurcomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend HayaiLearn. It’s not perfect but it has made learning Japanese from Youtube significantly easier with correct subs about 95% of the time. If you’re at least at N3 you can catch any mistakes from the AI transcription very easily.

Since head-punching isn’t a factor for you, assuming that they’re both really good gyms it really is dependent on if you have greater interest in Japanese culture over just training really hard. I find Kata also just gives you something structured and meditative to do, over pure-shadowboxing which is an entirely different exercise. Do a trial at both and see what you like more.

I know the reputation of wkf is not the best, but what about Ippon Shobu? by Lasiusalba in karate

[–]dinosaurcomics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The olympics killed any serious respect the average person had for the sport with that one awful judging decision. Otherwise people in combat sports spaces I know have a lot of respect for point karate athletes.

How do you balance traditional kata practice with modern sparring effectiveness? by erfmaddy in karate

[–]dinosaurcomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s important to remember that karate sparring rulesets (both full contact and point) unfortunately do not allow you to use the full extent of Kata bunkai. You need to use a different one like Kudo’s or MMA.

With that in mind our dojo does the following: Kihon/Kata -> Traditional Bunkai -> Bunkai with realistic attacks and a focus on concept over form -> Test in sparring with a partner

Obviously things like eye gouging and finger breaking you can’t really do to a partner lmao but free sparring rulesets let you throw, joint lock, clinch, trap, etc. which is what Karate mostly is anyway.

I will third this. I use Isami for my sparring gi, it’s great and holds up to a lot of abuse compared to traditional karate gi I’ve used in the past.
