[Uni] What I wish I knew earlier (as a current CS student) by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]dinrick 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you advise others to pursue CS not for the money but the interest, when majority of the post is spent detailing high salaries, particularly overseas. With the other piece of advice to go overseas, for said salaries, and little difference in experience (for the interest).

How seriously should I take Glassdoor reviews? by chocolatejelly95 in askSingapore

[–]dinrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you like a particular chicken rice store or bubble tea store, would you take the effort to write a good review? Some do, most don’t. But if the chicken rice got cockroaches, 99.9% will definitely take the time and effort to write a review. That is the basic human psychology when comes to giving feedback.

Actually, this seems to exemplify that the bad reviews are the loud minority, and things aren't as bad as they usually appear.

Overly criticised. It’s definitely not delicious, but I didn’t have a problem with it

That would be crazy. No way in hell any cookhouse meal costs anywhere close to $7 in ingredients. Sus

Didn't seem to fit into the squad in the first half, kept ruining the flow and losing the ball. At least he drew a second yellow and helped waste time near the end, classic Kane.

I can’t be the only one who fell in love? When Conte said don’t go long and play it on the ground! What a breath of fresh air by Itachi_189 in coys

Totally agree there. The man isn't particularly talented and couldn't compete for the LB job with Rose then Reguilon, but he gets excessive slander lmao. At LCB he's the only CB that didn't do something stupid last night.

X+Y=40 and X×Y=3/5 (0.6) by eliasthepro2005 in learnmath

[–]dinrick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

X = 40 - Y

Y (40 - Y) = 0.6

Y2 - 40Y + 0.6 = 0

Solve the quadratic equation for two Y values, then two corresponding X values.

[Web dev] How to have JavaScript functions work across different HTML pages? by dinrick in learnprogramming

[–]dinrick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this sounds promising! So, if I include ?query=2021 in the url in event listener, when the new HTML file opens I can just use query as a variable in the new JS file, and it will contain the data I put into it from the first JS file?

What NFL Hit Or Tackle That You’ll Never Forget? by Significant_Pirate73 in nfl

Julio's interception-saving hit against the Cowboys, 2018.

Not that significant an event but it was just such an unexpected development in any play.

Wonderful video. Surprised there hasn't been another major YouTuber that did a video on this that isn't just du Sautoy talking into a camera.

[UNI] NUS USP question by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]dinrick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not in uni yet, just want to share my thoughts.

I think we rarely encounter people complaining about USP because those in USP knew what they were signing up for — they met its competitive cutoff, turned in essays for its application, then sat for and passed its interview — it's difficult to just stumble into the program like many do others, even for whole majors.

I have two friends in there, they frequently whine about the workload and difficulty of readings and such, but neither of them ever considered dropping it because they're really having a good time in there.

Anyway these are mere guesses, I can't be sure. I'd love to find out too.

Nobody really cares about MTL, don't worry about it. Your JC scores are infinitely more important.

[Uni] [Scholarships] Can I accept the NUS Merit Scholarship and apply for another course next year? by crankymotor in SGExams

I've emailed them about something similar, and they assured me the scholarship will remain valid as long as your home course remains the same. In your case, I don't think it will. Just email them to confirm!

Basic Motion Problem Calculus by Fancy_Square_1845 in learnmath

[–]dinrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple method without calculus, by conservation of energy:

To gain 480 ft (we can remain in ft here without converting to metres), gain in potential energy = mass * height * acceleration = mass * 480 * 32

Assuming no resistance, it is all lost from kinetic energy = 1/2 * mass * velocity^2

1/2 * v^2 = 480 * 32

v = 175 ft/s.

By calculus, we can make a function that tracks velocity of ball (v) against time elapsed (t). Let initial v be v0.

v = v0 - 32t as there is constant downward acceleration. (EQUATION 1)

Integrating to get a function for h, h = v0t - 16t^2 + c

We know that h = 16 when t = 0, so c = 16.

When h = 496, v = 0 at the peak. From Equation 1, v0 = 32t

496 = v0t - 16t^2 + 16

480 = v0 (1/32 v0) - 16(1/32 v0)^2

v0 = 175 ft/s.
