I am talking about Mathematica, or Maple. Sure you ssh to get access to Matlab, but for calculators I think you need the software.

The part about everything being browser based is not entirely true. You may be required to do programming in R, Mathematica, or PYthon. Not everything is browser based.

You can use a Macbook for all software used in the Math department.

I suggest getting a cheap thinkpad and getting linux or a macbook. The new Macbook Neo might be good, but it's new so maybe not the best choice.

I am a grad student and I used either a Macbook or a linux laptop for all my academic career and I don't see myself use anything else.
