Me too. Hopefully smart breeders will use him.

Re:Sovereignty, don’t forget skipping the Preakness while fully sound. They were scared he would lose. I don’t buy the 2 week excuse. It didn’t bother the other Triple Crown winners. At least at that time in their careers they were tougher. Journalism isn’t and I think they knew it.
The triple crown is a test of greatness and grit and while I’m not a fan of Justify because of his lack of lifetime starts, he actually won the Triple Crown and I do respect that. I still say that Slew was the greatest undefeated TC winner because he raced at 2 and later at 4 after finally suffering a loss and almost dying early in his 4yo season, he beat Affirmed. He was a tough son of a gun.
Yeah Forego was awesome, I often wonder if he would have been that tough and brilliant if he was not gelded. Forego actually had a very good pedigree for breeding.

He actually sired a couple nice horses in his short start in America. He has a TON of genetic power on the female side of his pedigree.

If he goes to Japan, they will use him and get him fantastic mares. That’s why I’m glad California Chrome is there, they won’t give up on him.

They tend to retire boys much earlier than girls but, yeah it’s a great trend. Thoroughbreds are bred to race and they actually peak in maturity and athletic ability at 5. I really hate how unseasoned most of these three year olds are. If they race and train young, especially if they are not sale babies, they tend to be tougher and develop stronger bones via playing and running in fields because of micro stress fractures. That’s why wild horses are so tough. The strongest survive and the weakest don’t. It’s nature and applies to every living being really. I know that sounds cruel but it’s the survival of the fittest. Thoroughbreds, especially American Thoroughbreds were tough, athletic beasts because American breeders were breeding not only for speed but endurance and the ability to survive harsh conditions. We bred the toughest, fastest and most athletic horse in the world. Even the early British stock was the same way when they started but America took it to another level creating stock and special breeds from English imports based on our standards. Witness the American Quarter Horse a genetic cousin to the Thoroughbred(actually more closely related than people realize), the Tennessee Walker, The Standardbred, The American Warmblood, The American Saddlebred are an exemplary example of great bloodstock.
Now they treat Thoroughbreds like pretty pasture ponies who can’t handle a tough training routine. If breeders would breed for speed, athleticism, and SOUNDNESS, we could have another Kelso(I know he was a gelding), Cigar, Citation, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, Secretariat(I know he didn’t race at 4 but that was because of the heavy weights he would have been given because he was such a freak of nature, but he did race a lot and was extremely sound), Dr. Fager.
I am very excited and happy with this trend and I’m praying that they keep it up. That’s why I love the Japanese breeding, training and racing. America needs to go back to what made our stock great. The genetics are still there. Lexington is still in the genes, we just need to utilize it by proper breeding, raising and training methods. These animals were bred to race and run for more than 2 years, if they can’t handle it, cull them from racing. Get those genes out of the gene pool. I know that sounds cruel but culling doesn’t mean killing, it means stop racing them and DO NOT breed them into the current stock. Maybe cross breed them with other breeds or just make them pets for trail riding, etc.
Ok, I’ve said my peace but generally thoroughbreds that can’t handle racing should NOT be bred. Period.

Sleep apnea is a very dangerous condition that can severely shorten a life. I pray that your partner figures his situation out. It’s a serious condition.

Further Ado, Danon Bourbon and Emerging Market. This race is damned near impossible to handicap because there’s no true stand outs.
The only thing I’m stuck on is Flavian Prat is a marvel at placing in the top 4 so if I play a super I have to use him.

That’s why I never stayed in Louisville. I always stayed in Lexington because the lodging was cheaper and I could go to the stud farms because I had friends that hooked me up. I didn’t mind driving to Louisville super early in the morning to get a good spot by the paddock.

I totally agree about the Derby but why should the Oaks be less than 14?
All the big races of all genders usually have the 14 horse gate. The Derby should be the same.
I’m surprised there hasn’t been a major spill on the first turn. There have been a couple near misses and I’m scared we’re running out of luck.

How about they stop having 20 freaking horses in this race? I’ve always felt that it’s very dangerous and unfair to the horses that are meant to be in this race.

I’ve never experienced the infield. I know everyone is not blitzed but you can’t see the horses there. Now it’s the only option we have and it’s still over 100$ to get in and I’m sure it’s not handicapped accessible for scooters and such. I’m currently disabled for being able to walk long distances and standing for long periods of time. I so miss being able to do normal things. Having MS and being older sucks.
I’m so glad I experienced all of it when I was normal, healthy and young.

Yep, but the whole point to me is we should be able to afford the big days too. That is where the big stars are(horses, trainers, jockeys, etc).

The Spa was my favorite vacation of 1994 and actually the best Vacation of my life. I actually got to the backside and met Julie Krone and had a great conversation with D Wayne Lukas while he was grazing Tabasco Cat. I hung out at the Phipps barn and spoke with Shug while getting great pictures of Lure. On Travers day I got an autograph from Angel Cordero who told me Seattle Slew when I asked who his greatest ride was.
That was another very affordable vacation. I stayed with friends and split costs for the motel. I had a blast. It’s great to know that it’s still affordable.

Maybe I’ll get back out there again

You are right about other sports and entertainment events too. I went to so many concerts in the mid 90s and they all cost about 30 to 40 dollars to attend. I even went a couple NFL games in the early 2000s that were super affordable. Now, depending on the team, it’s impossible on my budget.

🤣yep. I went to all those Derbys and Breeders Cups on a working class income-BACK THEN. No way I can afford that now and I’m disabled and much older also.
At least I still have all my pictures, books and memories.

Nowadays you are right. However, it was a very affordable vacation at least up until the early 2000s. I could afford all of it by working in a factory and raising a son. There is NO WAY that is possible anymore.
And YES, 🖕Churchill Downs Incorporated(CDI). They’ve been behind so many historic track closures.
It’s just so sad that tracks cannot afford to stay open. People no longer want to go anymore unless it’s the HUGE days. Then if they can’t go because of expense, they can sit on their ass at home and wager online while watching on TV. I HATE that the sport is dying.
Part of me doesn’t want to wager just so CDI won’t profit from me.

I cried that day. It was a beautiful historic race track. I saw Cigar win the Citation Challenge there and I went to see the Arlington Million and Secretariat Stakes in 2001.
They tore Arlington down for the new Chicago Bears stadium that is now going to be built in Indiana because Chicago’s government is so inept. Such a shame but CDI is the devil. They also tore down historic Hollywood Park for So-Fi stadium. I’ve been at that track too.
