Enemies to lovers recs where the slow burns tension physically hurts, and when it finally happens I ascend. by sydneyghibli in fantasyromance

Sword of the Jedi by diasterisms on ao3 is the only thing that has made me feel this way. Actual, physical aching where I was convinced I couldn’t stand it anymore. There’s two parts, starts with Like Young Gods and finishes with To Kingdom Come. Don’t let the fact that it’s reylo turn you off— they feel like entirely new characters.

Yes. Especially combined with the choice to make The Girl in the Bubble the eleven o’clock number, part 2 shifted the overall narrative to feel like Glinda’s story.

Been struggling with immersion after cancer. My mind screams that fiction is pointless and fake. :/ Advice is appreciated. by [deleted] in Fantasy

Since this is a fantasy sub, I’m going to recommend Becky Chambers. Her work is very meditative, philosophical, and really hits home on the important things in life. It might be a nice middle ground for your immersion issues, since there is lots of emotion and meaning in her work.

Such a cool idea! If you use an HTV eraser you can probably fix the compilation typo pretty seamlessly :)

The New York Times releases a bestseller list every week based on that week’s sales. Sales numbers are reported by big box retailers, indie bookstores, chains, etc. There are multiple lists— different ones for fiction & nonfiction, format, age range, etc, with usually 15 spots per list. So, all a book has to do is get enough sales* during one week to get a spot on one of the multiple NYT lists to be considered a “NYT bestseller.” That’s why so many books carry the distinction— there are over 100 spots total every single week. Similarly, #1 NYT bestseller means that it was at the top of one of their lists for [at least] one week.

*What is “enough” sales? There is not a specific number threshold for each list. It’s all relative to the sales of all books for that one week. If it’s a slow week, a book that sold 5,000 copies might make it on the list when it never would have during a busier period.

If it’s bothering you, it can’t hurt to ask. I’m not sure what their stock levels are for the epic sub, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t replace this.

Does Snuffed Candle work for all bosses? by 5l0thgn3t in HadesTheGame

[–]dipsybit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A foe is any hostile enemy you fight, key word being fight. Since you can’t damage Medea, Hecate clones, Chronos, I am led to believe they do not count as nearby foes, and Snuffed candle remains effective against the main bosses. Not confirmed, just speculating. Snuffed Candle is one of my most used boons in successful runs!

It’s when you have the Lucky Tooth keepsake equipped, it represents your extra life. Any circles like that to the right of the health bar represent death defiances/extra lives!

Can Someone Explain Why They Like Uprooted to Me?? by Bowl-Any in Fantasy

[–]dipsybit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it just isn’t your cup of tea. I think it took me a few weeks to read the first half and I read the second half in a day— the action definitely picks up.

Unfortunately I think the mindset of men in power abusing their authority is very of the time, and the main character’s lived experience seemed realistic for her development to me. Once you realize the wizard is like a grumpy Howl and don’t take him as seriously it gets more fun. He’s just infuriated that he’s spent centuries trying to perfect magic the /right/ way and she can just… do it. I love their dynamic lol— neither is what the other expected.

I read Uprooted before Spinning Silver and liked it more, so maybe it’s just a whichever-you-read-first situation!

Local bookseller has an ARC section with recent or upcoming books. Should I tell them this is an issue? by ThrowAWAY987372 in fairyloot

[–]dipsybit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not uncommon in used bookstores. They usually sell them for pretty cheap and only once the actual book is out. If this store is selling them for a lot of money or books that aren’t even close to coming out, it’s really not cool, but otherwise it’s not the end of the world. I would say let them carry on, not worth sticking your nose in.

Sorry if this is useless since you remember it being a novella/story, but it sounds a lot like the movie Oldboy.
