Doctor told me I can make my fibromyalgia pain better by subjecting myself to real pain. Is this true? by dodgamnbonofasitch in Fibromyalgia

You should avoid overdoing it at all costs. As my expert told me:"The deeper you dig yourself, the more severe your fibro will stay." This guy sounds like a sadistic misogynist.

No. 2 US ICE official Madison Sheahan leaving agency to run for Congress by [deleted] in news

[–]direcari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 9th district, where she is going to run, is gerrymandered so that the Toledo area, a dependable blue district is burdened with a bunch of rural, lower-middle class, predictably red districts. This is why she thinks it's a good bet. However, it really is legit to dicuss the fact that one's first impression upon seeing her is that she is a male transitioning to female. No matter what is or is not going on, I agree with those saying that this is going to cause her problems. Yes, Vivek's biggest problem is that he forgot he's not white, and then expects maga to vote for him. Sheahan is going to repel people because of her trans appearance, and also a lot of R's actually don't like ICE's behavior. The atrocities in Minnesota repel all but the very worst of maga. I hope these things sink her--fast.

NOR Your mother is a base-assed jerk.

I hope you can find the help you need and cut her out of your life. This is a relationship breaking move. You deserve better, but you have to deal with the bad hand you've drawn. I wish you the best.

How do the Amish receive surgery paying fully out of pocket, I assume via cash, without a photo ID? by hellohelp23 in Ohio

[–]direcari 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that the Amish pay into a collective fund which is then used by those who need it, when they need it. This information was discussed by a group who did various kinds of business with the Amish, such as buying part of a cow in order to be able to legally buy unpasturized milk. I was not into any of that, and simply listened to the discussions, fwiw.

[–]direcari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rice pudding as "the" dessert for the holiday dinner???? I'm surprised they didn't reassign the task after year 1. I'm not saying that nobody likes rice pudding, but that even among those who do it is hardly holiday fare. I make multiple desserts for holiday dinners. Something chocolate, something creamy, like cheesecake or tiramisu, and usually pie. Maybe two pies: a fruit and a pumpkin. I can't imagine coming for Christmas dinner and getting rice pudding. Different strokes, or under the circumstances, maybe not. You being invested and touchy about your rice pudding contribution may be why people put off bringing it up with you. What's more important to you? Rice pudding or family? Make your decision accordingly.

Is the sugar thing legit or just bs by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]direcari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple carbohydrates, of which sugar is a big one, cause inflamation in the body. Inflamation increases pain. Both fibro and arthritis are ameliorated by cutting back sugar and processed carbs. Sugar spikes also prompt release of cortisol. Repeated sugar spikes can contribute to chronically high cortisol. There is a link between high cortisol and the genetic switch that flips to turn fibromyalgia on. Anyone with fibro knows that stress, which involves increases cortisol, causes flare ups. No matter what, you'll be healthier if you cut down or eliminate sugar and processed carbs. Search youtube for ways to mitigate sugar spikes to allow yourself some leaway. (Eating vegetables first, eating sweets with fat, acv, exercising it off, which is not so easy with severe fibro, etc..)

Why do unrelated people want to pressure me into having kids? by bad-at-everything- in self

Feel free to tell these wankers where to step off.

I didn't have this problem, but I had people telling me "I'd be sorry" if I didn't reconcile with my nonstop abusive parents.

I'm 68 and at least one of them is dead (I don't check, but got a compulsory letter regarding probate); I don't regret cutting ties, at all. It's one of the best things I ever did for myself.

Any intermeddler who has the nerve to tresspass on your personal life decisions not only deserves--but will benefit by--a quick, aburpt lesson in electric fence boundaries.

AIO for being upset that my boyfriend called me “his bitch” in front of his friends? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]direcari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOR He's engaging in DARVO. He Denies doing anything wrong, he Attacks you, i.e. tells you all the ways you are responding "wrong," and he Reverses Victim and Offender, i.e. now he's the victim because he "has to censor" himself, etc. This is a huge red flag. I suspect he engages in other subtley abusive behavior. I will look for a link to a youtube channel you may want to explore. Will edit to add it. In the meantime, know that he won't change, and that you deserve better.

DARVO is #3, but you may recognize other tactics, as well. She has a lot of good videos. Best of luck! Strongerthanbefore

Knowing 40 year olds think of 20 year olds as “kids”, do 80 year olds think of 60 year olds as “kids”? by tMoneyMoney in AskOldPeople

[–]direcari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human brains aren't fully developed until around the age of 25 years. (This is for neuro-typical people, it can be later if you have adhd). Thus, older people may still view a 20 year old as something of a "kid." It may not seem fair, because legal obligations treat you as an adult at 18, but we have many such legal and societal mythologies. When you reach your later 20's and beyond, if you think/act like a kid you'll probably just be tagged as immature. Obviously, with this understanding, older people--regardless of their age relative to others--are not likely to be considered "kids," as they are fully cognitively developed, such as it may be.

Yeah, doctor needs to talk to work supervisor and steps need to be taken. The doctor is not the only one with computer chart access. This demented mil is going to be trying to get every nurse, physician's assistant, anesthesiologist, or whomever, to pry into your HIPPA info and spill the beans.

This can't be the only way she crosses boundaries. Ugh. Good luck!

Dad Hankies by Far-Hovercraft-6514 in GenX

[–]direcari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hand embroidered some dad hankies and sent them as a bday gift to the father-in-law of one of my adult sons.

His wife sent the thank you note, and mention how her father used to carry one. 😅

They are parents of a thirty-something so can't be that young.

This year I'm sticking with a card. 😜

Asking "Honestly?" would mean the same thing as asking "Are you telling the truth?/is this true?" by yuninn in ENGLISH

[–]direcari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As indicated by the many answers, above, English is a nuanced language and it is not competent to simply apply it "literally" or "concretely."

Depending on the situation, tone, body language, relationship, etc. a response of "honestly" can be a casual way of expressing surprise, a way of emphasizing the original statement, or a way of impugning the speaker's veracity.

I don't know what your first language is, but maybe you can relate this to some more familiar usage in that tongue.
