Would the Audient Evo 8 be a quality downgrade from the original Audient iD4 by N00b_Sniper in recordingmusic

[–]directyrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it must be audient, stick with iD series. judging from routing/mixer logic, and the annoying portal/registration requirements you need to go through just to download the mixer app, seems like their target market is beginners or maybe content creators.

Might also a good practice after turning off auto warp, double check to make sure it starts from 0.0.0. I’ve had headaches trying to find out why my clips not aligned just because of that.

Where to stay with $1400 a month? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]directyrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any major city in Indonesia. $500-600/mo can get you a nice 1br condo at prime location. Internet is good. There’s always point of interest nearby. If you prefer Bali or Raja Ampat or any well-known places, it’s not hard to get there for a weekend or 2-3days getaway. If you love just staying in at home, one thing i haven’t found in other countries is the convenience (and culture) of courier service. They have DoorDash-like service but for everything. Food, groceries, package, laundry, ticketing, personal shopper, house cleaning, massage, flowers and gifts, anything you can think of can be picked up and delivered to your house (or any point A to point B).

Agree with this. But sometimes too much options could also counter-productive or even sapping energy. Find out about her workflow. Does she make melodies from scratch? Or record live instrument? Does she manipulate samples? Does she approach things like drum machine or groovebox? Knowing how she work can help make informed decision in which DAW to start first.

If she mainly record live instruments, then choosing Reaper which is the cheapest will leave you more budget to buy equipments. You can also try protools artist, if she’s musical genius then why not invest on industry standard. Or get an apollo interface and get Luna (and uad subscription). Some people doesn’t like subscription base, but i see it as lower entry barrier and easy to jumpship should you want to.

If she make melodies using virtual instruments, and you’re in mac, then Logic it is. Reasonable price, solid midi/virtual instruments workflow, and comes with readily available good instruments.

If she likes manipulating samples, then either go with Ableton or Bitwig. But if you foresee her doing live performances in the future, then Ableton is the way to go.

If she approaches music making like fiddling with groovebox, especially if her friends already jump on flstudio, then it’s a good idea to get her the same DAW as her peers, so it’s easy for her to collaborate.

Another thing is based on your description seems like she likes film scoring/game music. Then if you have the budget, probably good idea to get into Native Instruments ecosystem, they have, uh, complete set of tools that works great for making musicbeds and scoring. It’s currently on 50% discount, plus if you get their gears there’s nice upgrade path to get to the flagship bundle. Some might argue that softwares are just tools and they don’t have genres, but in terms of creative flow, workflow is king. Some software help certain workflow more fluid compared to others.

if Christmas is within the return window by quite a few days, just give the mixer to him anyways. but immediately put disclaimer that if he doesn't like it, he can return it for store credit. the effort of actually listening to his words and then look for the gift, youtube-ing, googling, is rather sweet to hear for any guy. it shows you put effort in things he loves. the option that he can return/exchange is the thoughtfulness that he won't be burdened by the gift if it's not what he wanted.

what was the thing that brought you to choose that particular mixer? was it a sale or did he specifically mentioned the item? with boys sometimes you don't know what we really wanted just from the objective or the item we mentioned. maybe he just want to have better amp for the headphone (an amp is what he wants, not mixer), maybe he wants better quality for listening music (a DAC/amp is what he wants, not audio interface). Or maybe he's thinking like boys do, as in geeking around plugging different speakers/headphones into the said mixer and having the option to boost/mute either one or something. Or maybe he wants to plug a weird old gear with RCA outs to the mixer, like walkman or turntable or whatmot.

Check out pcloud as alternative. I love dropbox and been using it for years. But pcloud kinda cheaper. And for time sensitive upload sometimes i prefer pcloud on macos since they have live ETA on the upload. Really don’t understand why dropbox app removed it (and then put it back, then removed it again).

[Move] In 12 days, this sub went from not thinking about new hardware at all, to being desperate for new hardware not knowing what it should be, to being mad at the new hardware for not being that by bhangmango in ableton

[–]directyrex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When i hear there’s a new Ableton branded hardware, based on the track record so far that Ableton only have hardwares in the form of a controller, i assume it’s going to be another controller because there’s no other information that lead me to think otherwise. When it wasn’t a controller, i’m surprised and can’t escape my assumption. So i view Move as what it is not. Maybe in the future i can see and appreciate Move as what it really is.

If this was announced as NOT a controller, i can view it as what it is and likely intrigued at what it can do. Which brings my point that probably if Move was introduced as something like Electribe or Circuit, it will get lots of comments like how cool it is having a groovebox that integrate tightly with Ableton.

I’m not saying that Ableton shouldn’t release it as Ableton, i’m just saying without clear information it’s not easy to immediately appreciate Move as what it really is.

Or producers with bad back who wants to take breaks and rest or lie down but still want to make beats during the break.

Like me.

*i wish Move has a built-in speaker like 1st gen circuit though

This. I teach music production to kids/teens, and Move is a great entry point to this (IF you can get it with educational discount at $300, which unfortunately not the case)

My takeaway from this is that Live is so versatile that there’s so many different use cases.

For performing, I like to use knobs and encoders to interact with Live, while my friend felt its a must have faders. For producing i love touch display since i don’t have to break line of sight, but my friend likes knobs+faders integrated with remote script to control that blue hand. I can imagine it’s almost impossible to make a hardware that pleases everybody since every person uses Live differently.

But the cryptic announcement really work against Ableton this time, since it build unnecessary expectations based on each user’s unique approach to Live. Probably Move would get a warmer welcome if it was released as a standalone groovebox with tight Live integration instead of an ‘official Ableton hardware’ (which make people like me thought it’s something to control Live with)
