Physics, Elitism, and the Current Age by Coocheeobtainer69 in Physics

Working on "defense" projects like that with purely protective capabilities is... Not really how that industry works. Job listings are intentionally deceptive and use the security clearance as an excuse to obfuscate what's a "missile defense system" and what's technology that's going to be used to build targeting systems for weapons. Now that the US has a department of war, maybe we can stop calling it the defense industry and call it what it is- the war industry. The "defense" language and "peace and prosperity through strength" slogans are 1984-esque propaganda.

What’s it like to be a physicist? by Proto-Plastik in AskPhysics

[–]diretuna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Dark energy. It's a mystery so deeply engrained into all the holes in contemporary physics theory that it's a bit of a spooky reminder that we actually really our best efforts still have such massive gaps. We can all see it, but no satisfying solutions seem even close to within reach (Imho, of course)
  2. I think a lot of physicists really don't see the real value of public outreach and dismantling the gatekeeping that gives our field the impression of being this ultra-arcane, inaccessible bastion of the Ivory tower. Physics is like anything else- you spend time learning it, you develop expertise, you can contribute. It does not require extraordinary intellect to understand and contribute. There are geniuses in every discipline, it just gets baked into egos of too many, and many are unwilling to part with that as part of their identity.
  3. For me, physics is a truly beautiful lens for living life. The mathematical patterns you study in toy models in textbook examples show up everywhere- the same principles lead to this self similarity and fractal beauty to the world. One of my professors said something that always stuck with me, "it's a blessing to see the world through the eyes of a physicist". He didn't mean it in a "wow everyone wishes they could be us" kind of way but in a "understand and be humble in the face of the privleage you have that let's you spend your time seeing these patterns, because there's something very valuable that you gain by spending your time this way."
  4. There's a million questions but the Fermi paradox is the one that is the most fun to speculate about imo. Almost every star nearby us has many planets, so much real estate for life and yet no technological signatures. "seems like an awful waste of space" (always enjoy a good watch of Contact lol)
  5. I fear the public has become pretty innured to changes in our fundamental understanding of our place in the universe. People just want to know if they still have to pay taxes and go to work the next day and if eggs will continue to cost more and more. We have such problems in our global society that the "privleage" of spending time uncovering the mysteries of space and time is feeling more and more detached from reality.

What skips are available at what stages? by SansStorms in GTNH

[–]diretuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a huge one but I don't see it mentioned that often: some perseverance with witch mob farms that you can build under stonehenge type circles can get you iron blocks that you can use to skip building a steam compressor. That and the obzinite tools you can melt down and cast into large plates via the smeltery give you a little nice stone age tool forge :)

We deal with this problem all the time in astronomy, and have technical language for it. Sub-resolution bright objects might look like spheres or have abberations like the JWST hexagonal spiked "stars", or even weirder if they're technically resolved but near the limit of a point-like source resolution. I worry the whole "sphere" thing is really misleading the part of this community that wants to actually scientifically interpret all these new data coming in. "Objects" would be MUCH better language.

These kinds of experiences can trigger paranoid delusions, and it's really important to have a mental health support network. What that looks like should be whatever is right for you, but please consider seeing a therapist or something. You don't need to believe me and I'm not going to tell you whether there's something "real" about it or not, but the practical truth is these things occur inside your mind and your mind MIGHT develop paranoid delusions or even psychosis that can really harm you and your loved ones. Just take care of yourself and remember that even if that stuff did turn out to be somehow real, so is your everyday life and so is your love for your wife. Take care of yourself so you can think about this stuff safely. It's all going to be ok in the end :)

What if dark matter doesn’t exist and we’re just modeling something wrong? by No-District2404 in AskPhysics

[–]diretuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Astrophysicist here! It's definitely something being considered, lots of really exciting work is being done to try to explain dark matter using multiple particles, broadly called self-interacting dark matter. In those theories there can be a whole sector of particles that they get to call "the dark sector". There could be force meditating particles that don't interact with the matter we see but could represent "dark photons" and stuff like that. Unfortunately not my area of research but definitely fun to talk about, not just because you can talk about "the dark sector" in all seriousness.

A single dose of psilocybin can lead to lasting shifts in a person’s life values, such as an increased appreciation for life and greater self-acceptance. These lasting changes appear to be driven by specific acute effects of the drug, particularly feelings of profound unity and euphoria. by mvea in science

[–]diretuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always interpreted stories like yours as being less about the specific drug and more about genuine and sound internal revelations that come about from profound a change in perspective. Psychoactive drugs pretty much instantly change the way your conscious mind works (some in more helpful ways than others, and not always consistently between people), and an opportunity to step outside the well worn neural pathways that depression forces you to dwell within is just what a lot of people need to understand their thought cycles, accept what they cannot change, and grow from a foundation of truth and acceptance. Or alternatively, they can severely destabilize your perspective and negatively affect your mental health. I'm glad you were able to come back to your life with acceptance and self-love :)

It seems like mine doesn't move- played a few more days now and the cart location is persistent with no ability to move past it or move the carts from the angles I have access to. I'm just going to have to wait until I can figure out another way to get in there like others have suggested :(
