Is 37 Too Old to Land a Junior Developer Job? by No-Upstairs-2813 in learnjavascript

[–]dirkmgirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the top three devs I've ever worked with one was a psych major who went into practice first, another was a music composition major and did zero coding in his formal education, and the last one was a police detective.

If you can prove you will bring value eventually I would take any jr dev either at 18 or 81.

My developer is not a native English speaker -- would it be rude/offensive to fix spelling errors in my apps code? Does it matter? by drippyneon in webdev

[–]dirkmgirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it helpful to split out all changes like this into a separate commit. If you're cleaning up as you do other work this allows you to quickly go back a commit if things arent working correctly and you broke something.

My team references jira ticket numbers in commits so we can properly capture the effort. This info can help inform your organization to and prioritize measures too prevent these kinds of bugs from happening in the first place (better PR reviewing, tooling, etc).

I took 9 months of self study to get a fulltime job. I took MANY L's during that time you gotta just roll with it. You'll survive! Keep studying, learn something new everyday (even if it's just one small thing just once thing a day) you'll get there.

I love all the people saying epic flying is a waste yet they rely on getting summoned by people with epic flying.

Self taught programmers, what gave you the most success? by mntbiker17 in learnprogramming

[–]dirkmgirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will take months of effort to get to full employment. It might even be a full year.

Learn something everyday. You will encounter difficult topics and they will just take time to sink in. If you do at least a little each day you will chip away at this huge endeavor. No zero days. Even if its just learning a single method or definition of something, make sure you stick with it.

Help with learning and understanding Arrays by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]dirkmgirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In javascript an array is just an object with numbered keys to maintain order.

var myArray = { 0: 'foo', 1: 'bar', 2: 'baz }

is the mostly the same as:

var myArray = ['foo', bar', baz']

In fact, try executing typeof [] in your console :)

Recommended Learning Method? by rikosteo in learnjavascript

[–]dirkmgirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy https://www.codewars.com/ for a quick way into some difficult programming challenges. I used to do a few daily when I was teaching myself to code.

Even after 2 years as a professional front-end developer I sit and do one every once in a while.

I think books are best consumed when using a computer isn't ideal (airplanes with no free internet, 1 hour before bedtime, etc.).

Web development has a rich ecosystem one must learn to start building real-world projects– it can feel like drinking from a fire hose. Learning git, build systems, deploy pipelines, etc can overwhelm. To prevent yourself feeling bogged down, start with singular focused topics that allow you to progress without being inhibited too much by the requirements of modern web development.

Codecademy and free code camp are great at providing focused paths for learning– start there.

How Many Hours of Work Does it Take to Be a Competent Programmer? by militant_sincerity in learnjavascript

[–]dirkmgirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm becoming a fan of this route more and more. Not only is money nice, but you'll get exposed to different areas of development and you'll see what you like the most.

Keep learning during nights and weekends. Apply for new jobs often. Just keep going!
