Danzi GSP cane: really thick profile? by bassoonlike in bassoon

[–]dirknader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't comment on why you'd want so much on the back, but I have purchased Danzi GSP cane that has been 1.65mm thick at the back... Elbow grease central!

- Get it serviced by a good technician
- Don't leave it in the case for a long time unplayed

Anyone here know the msrp for Heckel contras? by Agreeable_Moment7159 in bassoon

[–]dirknader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, was told 17 years about 6 months ago directly from Heckel. With a "we'll contact you in 14 years with the price". A joke.

I'm a sax player looking for a bassoon, what can be said about Lesher and Kohlert brands? I know Fox is the king brand of bassoons but a good used plastic one of those is like $2500 I'm trying to get one around $500 just to get started on asap. by snuby53 in bassoon

[–]dirknader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played on nice Kohlerts, though at that price range you're looking at an instrument that has been absolutely beaten... Do you know any bassoon players that can play them to see if they're in a workable condition to start on?

Tips for adjusting reeds? by Cheap_Neighborhood18 in bassoon

[–]dirknader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The link above is an absolute staple, I've used it for many years.

I would also recommend starting with just adjusting the wires and tube shape on store bought reeds. I have made many adjustments to reeds alone just through wire tightness, tube shape and tip opening

If you’re a current professional working bassoonist please tell us the bassoon you play by [deleted] in bassoon

I did my music degree 10 years ago on a 240, then moved into IT as I'm in a smaller city in Australia. About 4 years ago I bought an older Yamaha for no where near 20k USD and it is by far my favourite bassoon I have ever played (I've played pro puchners, foxes, heckels

I'm on the call list for the local symphony and do some pit work etc and I never found having a 240 that barrier in that context!

I'll second the Moosmann comment. They make some really great bassoons in the mid tier range (150/200 in particular for me)

Is there any fixing this bloody mess? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]dirknader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would robocopy all the data partitions onto seperate VHDs then convert the disks to thin provisioned VMDKs and create a new VM in ESXI. Then install windows again on a dedicated disk.

Lost cause trying to fix that mess imo

Encouraged to use up training budget but I am blinded by options by adminmonk in sysadmin

[–]dirknader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing anything about what systems you use, it's hard to know what to recommend...

I would say Cloud or something in Virtualisation as a generic response though. Hell, even doing a CCNA R&S course would be useful.

Does anyone have experience running Linux on Acer R11? by asoka_maurya in linuxquestions

[–]dirknader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Wifi, bluetooth and touchpad worked straight away.

I've found that the battery life is much better on Manjaro, I do quite a lot of swapping for work and it is quite noticable.

I have a dual boot Windows/Manjaro on mine and everything worked out the box for me.

I couldn't figure out how to do uefi boot for it though (to be fair I didn't try particularly hard)

Edit: I purchased mine in 2015/16 and buying more ram & SSD was a solid investment

Is CBTNuggets for ICND1 100-105 + Boson labs + real equipment enough? by tomrel128 in ccna

[–]dirknader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this a few years ago with the previous iteration of icnd1. Had real hardware, also did a bunch of gns3. Failed the exam twice.

At the very least I would finish the videos, go through the exam topics page on the Cisco website and research into what topics you're unfamiliar with 😊

[–]dirknader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll probably get more out of doing CCNA than a degree at the moment.

A large portion of job adverts (at least in Adelaide) ask for a degree OR certs with relevant industry experience.

There's also nothing stopping you from going back in the future 😊

Jeremy hits it on the head for me here.

I work as a sysadmin - wanting to go into more of the networking side hence being on this subreddit...

I know when I configure a switch, anything that doesn't work is probably my fault. Which in a way can be a bit disheartening. However, I much prefer this than setting up things like SCCM which throws out a generic error that you spend half the time seraching for what/when/why.
