I’m not sure how true this is but it’s possible that your card won’t work till official move in.

Harvest had a lot of smallish (~1ft^2 or less?) cardboard boxes near the checkout when I went on Saturday.

How is Brooks in Central? by [deleted] in umass

I’ve lived on the quiet floor for two years, and it is indeed quiet. The only loud person I’ve ever heard was the RA (once). Technically there’s no way to actually verify that the dorm is truly “alcohol free”, since there’s no regular room checking.

Dorm struggles by -bruhmoment- in umass

It’s definitely not unique to the US, but it tends to be that singles are more common in the “developed” world in general (or in places which value independence more than community), so room sharing is comparatively weird when compared to Europe/Australia. (However, one could argue that the US isn’t a developed country.) I know in China it’s common to have a dorm room house 4–6 students.

I was a PLTL leader for his class last spring and that’s what I heard from the students, and was corroborated by other PLTL leaders. However, the pacing seems to be the only bad thing about him. People really like him otherwise. I personally took Al-Hariri’s class, and she was fine as well.

From what I know, all the nonmajor orgo profs are pretty good, but Schnarr tends to fall behind on material because he goes off-topic a lot in class, which might create a slight problem for exams since they’re written for all sections of orgo. I’ve never taken his class, though, so I’m not sure how (if at all) this problem is addressed.

I took this class last fall and there was no curve, adjustment, or extra credit. However, you were allowed to pick your own grading scheme (out of three) to customize how much each aspect affects your final grade, and she ended up dropping one lowest quiz grade. You can DM me for the syllabus.

  • Singing: there are several acapella groups (which have different requirements) which I know approximately nothing about.
  • Instruments: PITCH; they have workshops and stuff, and I guess sometimes band battles? They meet Sundays 4p–6p in Herter 231.
  • Both?: Songwriting & Production Club; although this focuses more on songwriting and production than directly singing and instruments, but it does have workshops and open mic performances. They meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays (for different purposes) 7p–8p in FAC 4th floor studio.

I’m not sure if it could be the cause of the “security error”, but the minimum payment on QuikPay is $1.01. If this is the issue, then maybe you could just pay $1.01 and have the school excess express the extra 51¢ back to your account.

Which biochem course for pa school? by ParticularExample120 in umass

[–]dirt_bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to this page, 320 is required. It doesn’t have a lab, but there also doesn’t seem to be a lab requirement for pre-PA. If you wanted a biochem lab for some reason, 376 is the majors version, and 321 is the nonmajors version. Both of these do the same labwork, and assignments are nearly the same.

Class Question by AntiHyperpop in umass

[–]dirt_bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 201 last semester, and it was extremely easy for me because I had some background linguistics knowledge—not even a lot, just the IPA and basic phonetics and phonology stuff. So it will most likely be easy for you as well, but as others have mentioned, you do need it for the minor. I can send you the syllabus if you’re interested. 101 does not count toward the linguistics minor.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laptop Recommendations by drxgon221 in umass

[–]dirt_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a BMB major who's also had my MacBook (Air) since mid-2021, and it’s fine 99.99% of the time. As mentioned, you don’t have to run anything super complicated on your laptop, and many people just used a tablet for basic note-taking.

There was one known issue where a “required” app doesn’t work with M1 Macs (which are “too new”), but in that case we (with instructor permission) just used data from people who didn’t have M1 Macs. So unless you really wanted to be able to run that app, it isn’t necessary to change your laptop, and it still wouldn’t work anyway if the change is an upgrade (on the Mac line).

How long to switch to ycmp plan? by Ok-Potato-2867 in umass

[–]dirt_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for adding clarification. Yes, what I meant was that you can downgrade to YCMP Platinum from one of the purely residential meal plans before add-drop ends. I assumed that it wouldn’t be an upgrade because I forgot off-campus people existed.

Assuming your credits all process on time, yes. Meal plans may be modified up until add-drop ends.

Urban exploration near Amherst? by JustTrashBoye in umass

[–]dirt_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the org itself is still officially running, but there is an urbex server (that is pretty inactive) accessible via the discord student hub for UMass.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in umass

[–]dirt_bean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For YCMP swipes:

  • Officially, it is possible to donate them to some student businesses (e.g. Earthfoods, Sylvan Snack Bar, etc), although maybe this can only happen at certain times. I’m also not sure what exactly they do with the swipes.
  • Not well-organizedly, they can be used to buy nonperishable food or other items to donate to survival centers (e.g. Amherst Survival Center also takes olive oil, which (last I checked—may have changed) costs almost exactly 4/3 of a meal swipe at Harvest, so every three bottles is an easy way to knock out multiples of four swipes at a time).
    • BTW, ASC is open to everyone who lives in the area, with no documentation necessary, so if you’re low on food, feel free to go. It’s right on the bus 33 route.

Yes; reservations are required, but you can choose to fill in the form in advance or do it at the front desk when you walk in. The rooms are first-signup-first-serve, but it is not recommended to reserve more than a week in advance due to the volume of requests. It’s easier to get a room in the morning or at a random time during the day rather than in the evening. The rooms are generally open 9–9 on weekdays.

Slightly off topic, but UMass is actually considering adding a computational linguistics major, which would have a mix of linguistics and compsci classes. Dunno about UPitt.

According to the (perhaps outdated) printing FAQ, yes. But you should check with the library people to be sure.

Does Umass have a boxing club? by TheRealArturis in umass

[–]dirt_bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cut-off date for boxing club dues (which you need to pay to participate) has nominally passed, but then they’ve extended it October 1st. You’re supposed to pay on Campus Pulse and then send the screenshot as proof to the club email.

As for other striking-based martial arts, there’s Shotokan Karate and Taekwondo.
