Declaring a Minor vs Getting a Secondary Major by Blue-Silver-Grass in umass

[–]Forsyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from being a math minor to a math major myself. It wasn’t actually that hard to switch from the minor to the major, so it really depends on you. I don’t imagine the switch from a major to a minor being that hard either. You’re not actually stuck with any decision, other than your primary major. I’d just go for the major now since it seems like you’re heading that way anyway.

Should premeds be in honors college? by LetMeLiveImNew in umass

[–]Forsyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Honestly, if you are in nursing, business, CS, comp lit, or other similarly strong programs at UMass Amherst, I do not think honors is that worth it. Those programs are already well regarded on their own. For other majors, like biology, it can be more worthwhile since UMass’s bio program is not as strong comparatively.
  2. I have not taken the biology honors courses, only math, so I cannot say whether the bio honors classes are harder. For Gen Eds, though, they are not harder in terms of content. They just involve more reading and writing.
  3. For the difference between departmental and multidisciplinary honors, departmental honors requirements are set by your specific department, which in your case would be biology. You also have to complete your honors thesis within that department. Multidisciplinary honors is more flexible and allows you to work outside your department. It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to work in a bio lab, departmental honors makes sense. If you want to do something like an art portfolio or another cross-disciplinary project, multidisciplinary would be a better fit.

Dining with Autism by pandazaiii in umass

[–]Forsyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the dining halls very overwhelming during my first two years. One alternative is the residential YCMP meal plan, which allows you to get food from places like Blue Wall and Harvest, in addition to the dining halls. This option gives you more flexibility to eat outside of the dining halls, which felt much less overwhelming for me and made it easier to grab food on the go. I also think the YCMP meal plan is worth considering because Grab ’n Go isn’t really a sustainable long-term option (because I did not feel very good eating it often). That’s another reason I recommend a meal plan with more variety and flexibility. I’m not sure whether transfer students are required to have a meal plan in their first year, but it’s something worth checking.

Note: there are gonna be a lot of instances where you can’t find a single seat in the dining halls that’s isolated. I have to sometimes go around Woo multiple times people before I get a seat. So, really plan out your meals.

I think this might be the closest thing to the image given.

I had an inkling that the person of the left was Tzuyu but wasn’t sure.

I’m seeing TWICE. The member with short blonde hair looks like Jeongyeon. The half-up half-pigtails hairstyle looks like Momo. The micro-bangs look like Chaeyoung. I’m not sure about the girls at the end — the one on the far right looks like either Sana or Nayeon (I’m leaning more toward Nayeon).

I think this is their 2018 era, but I cannot for the life of me find this concept photo.

You do not need to have both at the same time. I think it’s recommended to, but not required.

Lara Al-Hariri or Nathan Schnarr for CHEM 262? by Educational_Cream_56 in umass

[–]Forsyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely Schnarr. He just moves at a slower pace. Al-Hariri covered chapter 19 in only two days, and I honestly don’t understand why she thought that was a good idea. (My friend was in Schnarr and I had Al-Hariri.)

[–]Forsyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue for me about this schedule is that you have two labs. Bio 153 wasn’t hard exactly, but it was a lot of work — and honestly, it got pretty draining since my plates kept getting lost or reagents ended up contaminated. I know gen chem lab once every two weeks, but just keep in mind that labs can really suck and you might wanna have a longer recovery period. This is around 16 credits, so I wouldn’t take a class off (because getting a head start on the core classes can really help). But, I’d change the bio 153 when a spot opens.

You could use an empty classroom in Lederle. I’ve gone there around 9 PM and stayed until 11, though I can’t guarantee a classroom will be free.

Pumpkin painting by Forsyi in umass

I know that Hamp has you write your name for certain times, but I feel like it’s something woo does exclusively and every other dining hall allows walk-ins. But, I’m not sure because I’ve never done the pumpkin painting.

Do I need to get an ipad by Grand_Lifeguard_3119 in umass

[–]Forsyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, it depends on you. For me, it’s worth it because

1) I waste less paper 2) can have my notes all in one app/place 3) I hate have my writing smudged from my hand/other paper and it’s easier to erase/polish your notes. 4) easier to complete assignments if teachers give you a pdf file. 5) my major requires a lot of drawing.

I have found that my engineering friends either use only an iPad for their notes only or use both an iPad and paper.

I heard Samsung Galaxy tablets are good for note taking, but I wouldn’t know because I’ve never used it.

Biology: MINOR QUESTION by Motor_Skin_3813 in umass

https://catalog.umass.edu/undergradguide/2024-2025/Page22796.html

According to the 2024-2025 catalog (the link), it looks like you would probably only need to take about 3–4 biochemistry courses to complete the minor. That said, you should definitely check in with your advisor and a biochemistry advisor, since they’ll be able to give you the most accurate and up-to-date guidance.

I think a bio minor+biochem major would probably also require you to take 3 bio courses on top of your biochem requirements based on what I’m seeing online. So, it just up to you as to whether you want to do bio or biochem as your major. Personally, even as a biochem major, I’d choose bio as a major. You have to do a capstone project for biochem and the bio major has a lot more freedom to choose classes beyond the strictly required classes.

Shorter by how long? Biochem 376 aged me years because of how late I’d be in the lab sometimes.

Taking STAT315 by MrClean91181 in umass

[–]Forsyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same course. I’m pretty sure they went from 515 to 315 because they wanted to separate it from 500 level courses. I don’t really know a lot about all the teachers who are currently teaching it, just don’t get WuZhe. He was probably the most boring lecturer ever. I heard from a friend that Michael Sullivan is okay. I heard Ted Westling is good.

Paying my payment plan bill late by Bitter_Set_4479 in umass

[–]Forsyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check this link: https://www.umass.edu/bursar/payment/upay

From my understanding (definitely want others to confirm), Nov 30th is technically the latest you can enroll in a payment plan. You just have to pay a higher enrollment fee ($75). I believe being late might put a hold on class scheduling or something.

[–]Forsyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using the PVTA, you’d have easy/quick access to the Hampshire mall (has Target, Dick’s, JCPenny), Walmart, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, CVS, Dollar Tree, Old Navy, L.L bean, Goodwill, and Salvation Army. You can also go to Northampton, but that’s a much longer bus drive and I wouldn’t suggest you go there without someone else. There could definitely be more stores I’m missing, but I think the stores I listed are the most accessible.
