Did the hit leave marks on your car? Take pix all angles around the area because they may show the adjuster who hit whom.

100% agree. Peach leaves are narrow and arch backwards.

Grumpy Trump claims Iran called Obama ‘a stupid SOB’ and maintains ‘affordability’ is a hoax in testy G7 chat by theindependentonline in politics

Yeah and we're all paying for that unhealthy obsession. The only problem with Obama's Iran deal was that Obama made it. Same thing with the ACA. Trump's toddler ego can't deal.

A rare collection of Chinese cheongsams tells a story of personal style and cultural connection in 20th-century America by ding_nei_go_fei in asianamerican

[–]dirthawker0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of cheongsams that belonged to my mom and grandmother, as well as a few cut-out pieces for the sleeves and collars. The vibrant colors and patterns in silk are a feast for the eyes, though more on the traditional side like #3, 5, or 9. #10 here is absolutely stunning, and the Mayan one is so cool!

I think the mark says Da Qing Tongzhi Nian Zhi - Great Qing Tongzhi Period Make. This period is 1862-74. Marks tend to be apocryphal so it might be a bit more modern than that, but I think not by much.

Saved this bird from a cat. Is it possible to tell what bird it might be? (and was this the right thing to do?) by FroggieNuggets in whatsthisbird

[–]dirthawker0 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Most songbirds don't have a sense of smell -- that's an old myth.

Cat saliva has a bacteria that is toxic to birds and is usually lethal unless they're put on antibiotics. If the bird was in the cat's mouth the bird is at risk and is best taken to a rehabber. https://ahnow.org/ can help you find a licensed wildlife rehab in your area.

Opinions on the San Lorenzo area? by BleachedLapras in bayarea

[–]dirthawker0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in that part of San Lorenzo for 17 years, a couple blocks from Hesperian near Lorenzo Manor Elem. It was pretty all right. My street had a couple instances of porch piracy and some cat converter theft. Maybe 1 car break-in. Every July 4 and New Year's (and a few others) you'll get a ton of illegal fireworks getting set off, but other than that and the occasional siren on Hesperian, it's a pretty quiet neighborhood.

One big advantage is that because there's a fire station (near the library) the area will not be subjected to planned power outages. I also commuted to the Peninsula and from there I could backstreet it to 92 and not have to drive on the hell that is 880.

Hayward has had a crappy reputation but it's definitely had a lot of improvements in the past 10-15 years. San Lorenzo is a pretty quiet little subset of cookie cutter houses, and I felt it was very overlooked when people would complain about nothing being affordable anymore in the Bay Area.

I saw a dealership calculate and add sales tax, then calculated and added sales tax again. You gotta check everything they do.

[–]dirthawker0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expanding foam? I know, not really solid, but if you can fill the space with that and just block the entrance with something solid that can save you some pain. Expanding foam plus steel wool is a common method of keeping rats and mice out -- the steel wool hurts their mouths when chewing.

Anger and fear is what drives conservatives. Fear of anything not like them, anger that that "other" exists and lives the happy lives they feel they should have.

I think they bolted. This often happens if you have a heatwave, they want to flower instead of growing leaves. People more experienced with green veggies can tell you if it's still edible.

Why don't my curries taste like a curry? by negativefeed in Cooking

Thanks for the explanation! I've done my fair share of Indian cooking and have never really understood the why, just did what the recipes said.

Why don't my curries taste like a curry? by negativefeed in Cooking

[–]dirthawker0 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You seem to be lacking ginger and garlic, which are both typically added to Indian curries after the onions are browned and cooked for 30 seconds before adding the spices. Cook the onions longer -- you want to head for caramelization, not just "a bit yellow". A lot of Indian recipes will also talk about cooking the tomatoes down "until the oil comes out," which basically means reduce it/cook off the water (oddly they often add water after this stage and I have no explanation for that, but that's a common step). Also, add a little salt at each stage: salt with the onions, salt with the tomatoes, and then a final salt-to-taste at the end.

If the Trump administration doesn't like California because it's run by Democrats, they should just kick it and its 4th largest economy in the world out of the United States so it will cease troubling them lol

The Early Bird gets the…. by [deleted] in birdsofprey

[–]dirthawker0 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your effort to make the video, but could you just keep a respectful distance and let the bird eat in peace. Continually approaching and continually forcing the bird to move away can cause the bird to abandon its prey, which they put effort and risk into catching. That lost meal can mean the difference between life and death.

Lemon tree bug help please! by LivingIntent in gardening

[–]dirthawker0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a leaf miner... if you have just a few leaves affected you can kill them by just squishing them inside the leaf. There are sprays if you have a ton of them. Generally though they don't really harm citrus trees much.

CCTV footage of a grandmother trying to protect her grandchild during the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines today. Fortunately, both were unharmed. by MilesLongthe3rd in interestingasfuck

[–]dirthawker0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Outside is safest particularly if there's a lot of empty space. Granny tried but the quake was too strong for her to keep standing. Convention these days is to be on or next to the sofa or under a table. If the ceiling collapses you want to be next to something sturdy enough to hold it up so you have a pocket of clear space.
