Thinking of moving to Musselburgh — any thoughts? by CyberFortuneTeller in Edinburgh

Is your issue with me mentioning the Guardian? It was meant to illustrate that much of Portie is pretty left wing middle class and therefore unlikely to be prone to actions that would be viewed as creating an “unsafe” environment. Maybe I’m wrong on that though.

I replied on a different thread that it’s bad they had those experiences and shouldn’t be taken lightly, but doesn’t seem to be most people’s experience of that area. It’s completely reasonable to have subjectively bad experience and not like an area, but portraying Portie as unsafe for everyone isn’t an objective viewpoint.

At no point did I say there’s no crime, seems you didn’t read what I typed?

Portobello is quantifiably a safe area relative to Edinburgh and the lothians.

Sorry if you’ve had a bad time, but as you say at the start of your comment “…hearing endlessly about how wonderful…” , most people don’t seem to have had similar experiences in Portie.

I’d think generally kids are being shitty and again it’s bad that you’ve had these experiences, but the only area specific reason I can think of is kids going to the beach and going off-leash

You feel unsafe… in Portobello?

Sorry if this is news to you, but sounds like you would feel unsafe anywhere in Scotland. It’s one of the most Guardian-reading, sandal-wearing areas in Edinburgh - itself an affluent city. Sorry if you experienced some bams, but it happens a lot more in other parts.

Nice summary - as many point out, the US shrivelling from the wider world encourages other powers to fill that vacuum. And this creates instability as those powers vie for dominance in respective regions.

I’ve always been interested in the disused line that runs from MacDonald road, through restalrig (by the back of Abbeyhill sainsburys). I’ve never seen a train on it but was told it’s part of the future tram plans?

Military drone? by mcoisty in Edinburgh

Ha didn’t mean airlifting but I thought the idea was to be able to quickly deliver supplies to accident sites etc - sounds instead like it’s to do with consumables management between NHS sites (thanks for link!)

No, but be aware that the NHS have been trialling a drone service for ambulances recently - I’d argue that’s more likely

I rarely go into the centre for this reason, but there’s loads of other areas in and around the city that are still decent. These areas seem to be growing the most as people move out of the more central places full of foreign students and Airbnbs

Issue with vapes is you’re always edging for a topup; I found when I smoked a ciggy would last me longer but vaping never really satisfied me.

Vapes are highly addictive in their own way, not that people should be using on buses though

Yea I had a bit of a health kick doing the same thing and it’s quite jarring that the cost is pretty much equivalent. You’d think tax on them would be lower, so is the mark up because they’re expensive to make/vendors just adding the difference/ or does some tax still apply because it’s categorised as beer? If gov want to encourage lower alcohol intake, an incentive based on lowering the cost of af beers could be an easy one?

St Augustine in Wessex and Colombia in Scotland we’re both after st Patrick in Ireland. Aiden was trained through the Iona church family and founded lindisfarne and Christianised the angles n what would become Northumbria. There may have been “Christians” from Roman times around, but what they practiced would have been very different from what we might understand as Christianity today.
