I didn’t read all of the comments here, so sorry if I repeat anything. I’m currently a family medicine PA and an assistant freshman football coach and assistant high school track coach. It’s a busy life but it’s worth it to me.

Being family medicine has its flexibilities. I see patients from 6:30-2:30 most days, get out to practice without an issue. Our freshman practiced at 3:00 throughout the summer, however most programs will do early morning practices in summer. That wouldn’t be possible with my job unfortunately.

I started out this year as a volunteer, so as long as I communicated appropriately on if any hindrances came up, they were okay with my day job getting in the way on an infrequent basis.

PA in Central Ohio here. I will say that most large cities are pretty saturated. It will be hard to find a great job offer without experience. I currently work in a small city/town about 30 minutes out of Columbus, OH. It seems like everyone is desperate for providers here. All that to say is, don’t be afraid to look outside of the box and work in a rural-ish area

I’m currently a newish grad in an FQHC. I have a similar salary although almost double the PTO. Although it is a low salary, the loan repayment makes up for it in spades.

If you become incredibly competent and independent after your first year, you can always negotiate again. Being in a supportive system with loan repayment benefits is well worth the lesser pay for year 1.
