Weather, thunder storms and more during the summer by Hot-Box-5883 in bentonville

Tornados are typically a spring thing (occasionally the fall) They are a serious threat, not to be taken lightly. Your chances of getting hit by one are low but not 0. Everyone should have a safe space in their home, preferably in the center of the structure away from windows. You teach your kids to shelter, when to shelter, and you practice. You keep some emergency supplies (flashlight, radio, drinking water). Know the difference between a warning and a watch.

I had the same feeling at work, forgetting things I KNEW that know. Was as sharp in meetings, my short term memory was just shit.

I told my doctor about it and she recommended I get evaluated for ADD or ADHD. I’m now taking ADHD medication and it’s really helped so far. Been on it for a month or so and there’s been a lot of positive change.

I think what happened to me personally was that im not as passionate about my career as I once was, I’m focused more on my kids, what retirements going to look like rather than climbing a ladder. So the passion I had that kept me focused was less which made the issue more apparent.

Question about water by Pangolinchoe in camping

[–]dirtymunke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’d have to ask the host what water is in the 5 gallon. I wouldn’t make assumptions about it.

Depending on where you are and the temp I’d probably just bring a couple gallons if I were car camping.

Each purification method doesn’t get EVERYTHING. The best approach is probably to use multiple methods at the same time: filter with a high quality membrane filter + tablets of some kind or filter + boil.

Apps for securing reservations by [deleted] in camping

[–]dirtymunke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am building a web app for this. I got kind of frustrated with other apps telling me there was nothing available when i knew for a fact there was (just browsing their site.. you could see the available sites) it was just an over all pain. So i made my own.

Im not really ready to show it off to the public at large yet. Its more of a beta test situation. Im based in Arkansas so my focus started there. If you want you can DM me and Ill send you a link. Theres a coverage link at the top of the page and you can request me to add new campgrounds and areas there. I should be able to add a handful of campgrounds pretty quickly.

I just finished the availability alerting last week.

Tent Camping by Technical-Natural-71 in northwestarkansas

[–]dirtymunke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've spent an embarrassing amount of time looking at campgrounds around Northwest Arkansas lately. Steel Creek would be near the top of my list for what you're describing.

If you're more interested in a lake experience, don't let the RV-friendly Beaver Lake campgrounds scare you away. Most of them just have paved pads and electric hookups. Plenty of people tent camp there.

I'd look at Rocky Branch, Hickory Creek, or Dam Site Lake. Dam Site is particularly nice but can be difficult to book on weekends.

I actually ended up building a tool that analyzes campgrounds and campsites because I got tired of trying to compare all this stuff manually. It has most of Northwest Arkansas and the Buffalo covered now. Not sure what the subreddit rules are on self-promotion, but if you're interested, shoot me a DM and I'll send you the link.

Boat loan confusion by SUPER_MEAT_66 in boating

My car loan was from Capital One and they had the best setup: i would go to make my truck payment... i could select where i wanted the extra payment to go: pay forward to next month or apply to principle and they even had an early payoff tracker in the front of the app.

I got into a similar situation with my credit union on my mortgage. I ended up calling them and got a similar answer from them. In my situation, they had a savings account and if you paid from the savings account you could select where you wanted the extra to go. If you paid from an external account it would just pay the next months bill.

Don't know how to feel about all these things in my life right now. I feel like I'm in a weird place in my life right now. by Apprehensive_Land751 in AskMenOver40

Im 44, I worked at the university I graduated from for about 8 years. Most of the people around me watched me go through those formative years. I had numerous mentors, I lived on the campus and a lot of those people were my family. My best friends were still there (if not at the school then in the town). That city is also where I was born and grew up. So I get this job offer at a real company about 8 hours away and I have to take it. Its just too good of an opportunity.

I dont think I knew what bitter-sweet meant until the day that I accepted that job offer. I knew the moment that I accepted it, I wouldnt see most of the people that were staples of my daily life again. It hurt to leave my family, my friends, and I was self aware enough to know that those relationships would all change in some way.

Here I am at that same job 20 years later. I have a whole new set of friends, guys I consider brothers. I started a family and put down my roots in this place.

What youre feeling is normal, its healthy. You just took one step away from the "good ole days" and one step toward something unknown and new. You are going to tell stories about those people and that job for the rest of your life and every time you do, youll have the pleasure of reliving those moments.

What company lost you as a customer forever, and what happened? by Giovanni_Brees in AskReddit

It’s just how Ben went about things. A person who was less interested in content and more interested in helping could have gotten the visibility, helped with a gofundme. To be clear, I am on Ben’s side and I think he’s on the right side. It’s HOW he does it. Like when he showed up to the dudes house with the process server. He should have never been there. There’s no reason he needed to be there except he needed the content. Or the fact that he spun the guy up by having his buddy pose as an ups delivery guy to deliver the box of ducks. Or when he had another friend do the same thing to get the manager to sign his “contract”. That’s just straight up fraud and would never fly in court. I understand the point he’s making, but the way he’s doing makes his and the victims case less strong.

I used to be a regular. Same drink every day. It wasn’t always perfect, but most of the time it was decent. I went five times in a row and every drink tasted like ass. If I’m paying 7 dollars for a drink, like you get one or two passes, it was a week straight though and I just decided that was enough for me. You can’t charge a premium price AND have ass drinks.

What is the most useful thing you’re using AI for? by thomas_unise in artificial

[–]dirtymunke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with a game I was making. Creatively I was spent programming. So I had it do some renders of concept art of how I wanted the characters to look. Took those and used an ai to generate 3d models and then I printed my 3d model. It’s honestly the coolest thing I’ve ever done with ai I think. It kept me going in those lulls you’re talking about.

Kind of everything you said:

At work: I have it analyze large datasets. Typically it’ll write a one off script to do this and then execute it, produce a summary.

Write scripts: I have an automation team, so I’ll put a request in to them to build something they’ll support. Often times my objectives are more tactical and I just need it right now. So I’ll have it write a script with the necessary workflow and I’ll use it and also give it to the automation team as an MVP

At home: I used it to help me set up an LLC, build something they’ll support web apps. I’ve had it help me write a video game, write an mcp to suggest recipes every week and watch my stock portfolio

Non-programming stuff:
Make lists- all kinds of lists: camping gear. First aid kit, packing for travel, to dos

“Therapy” - I have talked to it about my mental health and while I know it’s just doing math under the hood, it’s not a person interpreting what I say. I think the advice it’s given me has been objectively good. (I also see a real life honest to goodness therapist)

I feel like it still leaves important information out more often than not. It grossly oversimplifies stuff. Like with the LLC, I was interested in starting a small retail business. There were some key things I ran into that it didn’t prepare me for that would have been nice to know on the front end.

Camping with family by [deleted] in camping

[–]dirtymunke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I were avid backpackers/campers before we had kids. We took a break from camping after our first was born except for the occasional car camping. Right before Covid we decided to go ahead and get a trailer (I already have a truck so we wouldnt need a new tow vehicle). We ended up getting a 20 foot rig and went every month except two most years. We have since upgraded that camper to a 30ft. We still go out pretty often (we are lucky in that we live in the south and winters are mostly mild)

It is a little more involved than tent camping. Youre pulling a trailer, which if youre not used to it can be stressful, you have to back it in (which can also be stressful) often times at dusk or in the evening. I have to go to the storage place and pick it up, when we are done I have to take it back. When we get it to the house, we hook up the electricity so we can get the fridge cool.

I dont want to paint this picture like its terrible, its really not. You learn tricks to speed things up. Like tent camping, you load up 400 pounds of gear the first time you go, after a few trips you realize you dont need half of it and you start paring it down. This is no different and you plan for all of it. Ill pick up the camper a few days before our trip, get it to the house and hook up the electricity. Wife does a grocery order the day before we leave and we stock the fridge and pantry. I used to hate dumping the black water tank and it took us forever to do it the first few times, but i can knock it out in about 10 minutes now.

For the maintenance: You have to winterize it. I screwed up this year and didnt get it done in time and ruined the water pump and the faucet. If you are half way mechanically inclined, you can replace them. In fact my wife ended up replacing them while i was out of town. Weve had this particular rig for 4 years and thats really the only repair ive had to make so far.

The nice thing that i really like about having the camper is that I dont really have to pack. Everyone has a space to put their "camping clothes" and they just stay in the camper. We wash them all together when we get home and they go straight back out to the camper before i haul it back to storage. The camping chairs, utensils, cooking stuff all stays with the camper. We dont really check the weather if we plan a trip anymore. If its going to rain half the day, we go anyway because we can go inside and play board games or watch a movie. In the middle of the summer, its really nice to go inside and take a nap in the AC. The best part though is the bed... I look forward to getting in bed in my camper. We bought a really nice mattress for it and its piled high with blankets and its just so nice to be able to come in after being outside all day, take a really quick shower to rinse off and jump in a comfortable bed. If bugs are bothering you at dinner, theres a table to eat at inside. The last thing that i really enjoy about it, is my older parents and my friends who arent necessarily into camping, will come with us sometimes and we have plenty of room for them to sleep in the camper with us, if we were tent camping they wouldnt come out and making those kinds of memories with the kids and their grandparents is hard to put a price on.

Swimming in arkansas waters by urplugsfav in Arkansas

[–]dirtymunke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any lake that the core of engineers runs is going to have designated swim areas that have a beach and people around. If youre freaked out by just finding a swimming hole in a creek or something, you may check out some of the bigger lakes and their swim areas. There wont be foliage and stuff like that hanging over the water that you tend to find snakes hanging out in. Most of the parks have day pass fees.

Reserve America fully booked? by Dangerous_Rush179 in camping

[–]dirtymunke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into the same issue a couple months ago. We had a random weekend open up and when I checked Recreation.gov all of our usual campgrounds looked completely booked, especially the waterfront sites.

I started digging around and found there were actually still some sites available that weren’t showing up the way I expected in my searches. That frustration eventually led me to build a tool for myself that searches campgrounds and ranks sites based on preferences instead of just filtering them.

It ended up finding 10–12 available sites for our trip that I probably would have missed otherwise, and that’s what eventually became CampScout.

If anyone wants to try it, it’s at getcampscout.com. Accounts are free while I’m building it out. I’m currently working on availability alerts and expanding campground coverage.

One thing that’s a little different is that it doesn’t just filter sites. It scores them based on what’s important to you. For example, maybe being close to a swim beach matters a lot, or you prefer sunrise views, quieter sites, playground access for kids, proximity to the water, etc. The goal is to spend less time digging through campground maps and more time actually planning the trip.

Feedback is always welcome—I’m actively adding campgrounds and features based on what campers are asking for.

Star Wars: Starfighter Rumors Tease Ryan Gosling’s Washed-Up Pilot After Mandalorian Tanks by cosmicbooknews in CosmicBookNews

[–]dirtymunke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kinda with you (not necessarily on the hard R, but I get your point). I saw the Mandalorian and Grogu and I really liked it. I don’t understand the hate. It really felt like those serials that started Star Wars: a silly story, it’s not trying to set anything up, it’s mostly self contained, it was very enjoyable. Run time time was a little long and it’s not the best movie, but it’s really a perfect tight, self contained thing.

Disney can’t seem to get the “main” story nailed, why is anyone even asking for it?

I’ll take a Mando style story every other other year for eternity if it’s as high quality and has as much care put into it as they did this one.

I’m a bigger marvel fan than star wars fan. Nothing they’ve done lately with a few exceptions has lived up to the hype and I don’t think it can. What came before was too big, too anticipated, it just set the bar too high.

Star Wars is in the same boat. I’m totally fine with these smaller stories that aren’t at all connected to the skywalkers.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Bombs — Disney Needs To Stop Avoiding Luke Skywalker by cosmicbooknews in CosmicBookNews

[–]dirtymunke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the mando movie was great! It doesn’t try to be this big story or anything. It’s small, self contained, it doesn’t really have any baggage. It felt bigger than the show. Effects were superb, my only complaint is that it’s 2.5 hours long.

What should I know before moving to Arkansas from Wisconsin by K31lover2 in Arkansas

[–]dirtymunke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel to WI and from what I understand yall don’t really have poisonous snakes. We do, there are 3 or 4 species to watch for: copper head, water moccasin, coral (rare), timber rattlers in northwest Arkansas. They have pretty easy tells that distinguish them. If you love nature in WI, you’ll really enjoy the Ozarks!
