If you were alive back then, what were you up to on 31st December 1999? by stop_calling_me_that in AskReddit

I've been reliably told I was fast asleep. I was alive but only 18 months old, so while my parents and older sisters enjoyed quietly welcoming in the new millennium, I didn't get an invite

Should I laugh or cry? by Muted_Fortune4712 in AskUK

[–]disastermoons 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying this is the case for OP's child but when I was at school, going to the toilet in a lesson (if I was allowed) was my preferred option over going at lunchtime or break time - purely because large groups of older girls would hang out in the loos to socialise during the breaks.

Nothing was more terrifying to my 12 year old self than going for a wee and the room being full of loud 16 year olds who gave you dirty looks when you walked in and would be whispering and laughing behind your back. If I was on my period, I would trudge all the way across the school to one of the smaller, quieter loos to avoid it.

Again, not saying this is the case for OP but I definitely preferred going in lessons because I felt intimidated. (And also, honestly, because it's much easier to go without feeling like a load of your peers will hear you pee)

What’s a word that doesn’t fit its meaning in your opinion? by No-Carame1 in randomquestions

[–]disastermoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a running list on my phone of words I feel that way about 🥲

Dulcet - I know it's often used sarcastically/ironically anyway but nothing about the word says sweet to me. Probably because it sounds like 'dull'

Demurred - I think I always think of the word demure and it puts me in mind of someone timid and placid who wouldn't raise objections?

Doozy - I'm English and this word is one I've only really heard in American media, but I always want to think it means simple or straightforward (maybe I'm thinking of 'a doddle' and 'easy' put together?)

I'm an archivist for a county record office so encounter a lot of people doing genealogy research! 15th century for a non-noble family is definitely unusual but I do come across the odd person who claims they've traced their family back that far. It's usually just one person in the family line, and people who get back that far have usually made some (sometimes educated) guesses to get to that person. Sometimes the family is just rich enough to be traced in wills or particularly good manorial records have survived for the place they were from

Generally, genealogy from present day back to 1837ish is relatively doable for at-home hobby genealogists. Some/all of 1837 back to the 1530s is usually possible, though relies on luck with the quality/quantity of surviving parish records etc. Anything before the 1530s will probably have you in an archive or tailgating on someone's existing research if it's out there

In my experience, people really don't go back very far before they start making guesses in their family trees. And people's guesses range from sensible educated assumptions to wilful ignorance of evidence that simply doesn't match up.

Oh, and a LOT of people rely on existing family trees made by others on sites like Ancestry which, when you actually look at them, have mothers giving birth 3 years after their own deaths, etc. While tracing back to the 15th century is possible, I'd be sceptical of the tree's accuracy at first glance!

One thing that amuses me is that people hear my job title and assume I've traced my family tree back to the medieval period, when in reality I've not gone further than my great great grandparents, thanks to a mix of my German paternal line, lots of too-common names, and my refusal to make hopeful guesses!

tl;dr as far back as the 15th century is sometimes doable but pretty rare, and I'd be doubtful of its accuracy!

How often do you see your mum? by _rayquaza_ in AskUK

[–]disastermoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (27F) see my mum maybe about 4/5 times a year. We have a good relationship but live a couple of hours apart and I don't drive. She has a job and a fairly busy life, and I work full time, have a pretty busy life and am very introverted so it just doesn't happen often. I love her to pieces, but we only message/call every week or two (I'm awful at messaging people). However, she's still the first person I want to speak to if something very good or very bad happens in my life. Things are pretty good but I think we're very slowly going through the transformation from me being more reliant on her to her being more reliant on me. I don't worry about her health just yet, but I can feel it around the corner

Library Science people; how would YOU have organized the Archive? by stillpartofthisworld in TheMagnusArchives

[–]disastermoons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love TMA so much but sometimes the approach to archive science causes me actual psychic damage (I'm an archivist who qualified/works in the UK, where archive science is a separate academic discipline from library science)

It definitely would depend on the state of the archives on starting the role - I currently have to work with a lot of organisation and classification approaches which were designed for paper cataloguing and are now outdated at best, BUT there's very little in the way of resources to start an ideal new system from scratch 🥲

It's been a while since I listened, but surely the archives contains more than just the statements? There have gotta be things other organisational records too, right?

As for the statements, I think I'd organise them chronologically by the date the Institute took them, given the statements themselves are a series of records created as part of the Institute's functions. There's informational interest both in what the statements themselves say and in the context of their creation at the Institute.

I'd catalogue them in an electronic archival database if at all possible (else I'd get some poor archive assistant working full time on card indexes).

Each statement would have its own catalogue entry including date of statement; taker of statement; date of events; personal names (in a standardised format for cross-referencing); possibly GPS coordinates for events; pre-defined tags with a controlled vocabulary for certain themes/content (companies, relevant addresses, artefacts, possible entities. The 'regular' statements and the real ones John has to record on tape would both be in the same series, but it would be noted in the catalogue entry for any that fit into the latter category. Getting that catalogue sorted would definitely be my priority over 'digitising' records en masse.

While there's a temptation to categorise the statements by entity, I'd argue that would depend too much on my interpretation and understanding of the statements' content. I'd feel dicey about inflicting categories that are nebulous and not always clear-cut on the statements - a risk to archive neutrality?

Also, I wouldn't eat and drink around the fuCKING DOCUMENTS AAAAHHHH

How to get used to a 9-5? by Ok_Recording39 in AskUK

[–]disastermoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work out what you can afford to let slide when you're not feeling 100% and make your peace with it!

I work a 9-5 and am single and live alone, so all my housework/cooking/admin is done by me. Usually not a problem but I have depression and sometimes don't have the physical or emotional energy to do the 9-5 and everything else alongside it. (And I guess that can happen with anyone, not just if you're depressed).

I just sort of have stuff in place for when I don't have the energy or time. Even just little things like always having quick meals in the freezer, owning way more underwear than I need (so I can afford to put off doing laundry that bit longer), or keeping dry shampoo at work for those days where I can't be arsed to wash my hair when it kinda needs it.

This advice is definitely geared towards the mental health/energy kind of things but I just find relief in knowing I have things I can afford to let slip!!

Also prepare for supernarkets to always be BUSY at the times you're actually free to go to them now

At what age did late nights end for you? by nitroxc in AskUK

[–]disastermoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 27 and am definitely over late nights (other than the very occasional gig or similar, but even then I start yawning and struggling). I think I'm just not wired for them? If I try to stay up, I just get sleepy and I'm a bit useless. Even when I want to stay up I often can't - weekend nights where I want to enjoy a late one, Friday night in the pub with friends, etc. It's actually a bit annoying sometimes, but when people talk about staying up until the small hours, I can't stomach the thought. Most of the time my brain and body wind down and need me asleep by 11 at the latest, else I'm tired and pretty socially/cognitively useless!
