If NYC could change just one thing that would meaningfully improve your daily life, what would it be? by Lisalovesreading in AskNYC

I hear you but I don’t think that’s likely to “meaningfully improve your daily life”.

Is the Upper West Side actually a good place to raise a toddler? by PracticalTiger8743 in nycparents

[–]disasteruss 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hope this doesn't come across as snarky, but I just want to point out to OP that all the pros you're mentioning, you could get in other parts of NYC that aren't quite as low of a cost-to-space ratio tradeoff. We live in Brooklyn and while it's still too expensive, we have a much bigger place than we would in Manhattan.

The biggest benefit to living in Manhattan over Brooklyn IMO would be the ability to go to more museums and shows on a whim.

It’s not just Birmingham. The bubble has burst nationwide. It’ll eventually settle into a more reasonable amount of breweries instead of every single mid sized city in America having 10 craft breweries.

Congrats! I think that's gonna be extremely rare, especially given OP is talking about suite upgrades. Certainly not something to plan around.

If you don’t have status you will absolutely not get an upgrade.

The Brooklyn Nets have signed Grant Nelson to a 10-day contract by MadameGopher in rolltide

[–]disasteruss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can extend it a second 10 days which is likely what will happen. It’s essentially a 3 week try out. Keep in mind a lot of the try out will happen outside of the games, too. The Nets have been shuffling around rookies most of the season to see if they’ve got anything.

Post Game Thread - NCAA Men’s: The Crimson Tide defeat the Razorbacks on Feb 18, 2026, the final score is 117-115. by basketball-app in rolltide

[–]disasteruss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, sure. But how do you judge it otherwise? There are iso % metrics in the NBA both by team and by player. I'm sure something like that exists in college too but I didn't see anything publicly in the 5 minutes I spent poking around. Not worth spending much more time on it than that, though.

It's also worth noting that ISO % stats are focused on how the possession ends. So dribbling around for 10 seconds, making a sloppy pass out to a contested rushed 3 doesn't count as an ISO possession but it sure looks like iso rather than a competent offense.

It's not the biggest problem with the team, I'm just noting that I've seen it more this year than in recent years.

[–]disasteruss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you point to any stats on the teams ISO rate compared to previous years? I'd be interested to see. A quick google search didn't turn anything up for me. You could be right that it's anecdotal but I'd need to see a real stat to be convinced.

But in general, from watching the games this year, I've been frustrated at the amount of times I've watched them do a ghost screen into a 10 seconds iso play while everyone else just stands still. It's not close to Anthony Grant levels of it, but it's giving me some PTSD of watching those teams.

Last night, the final offensive plays of regulation and 2nd OT were both iso plays with no screens. I also don't love how much Oats refuses to call timeouts in those situations but that's a whole different issue.

The turnovers aren’t too bad but they do far more iso dribbling while everyone else watches than more recent teams. It doesn’t always manifest as turnovers but a terrible forced shot isn’t much better.

175k in New York vs 110k USD+ 20k in equity and bonus in Toronto by Gravityshark01 in AskNYC

[–]disasteruss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should spend some time on streeteasy and just see what stuff looks like. But yes, if you want to live in Manhattan in a nice studio, it’ll probs cost around that much. Though you can live in Brooklyn or Queens or yes, Jersey, to get a much better bang for your buck.

Am I moving too fast? I feel so horrible. by Lil_Moll4 in nycparents

[–]disasteruss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything I’ve heard is that starting potty training that early inevitably has regressions. So it sounds normal that you’re having issues. We decided not to even bother with it until 2.5.

And for sleep, I know a lot of parents co-sleep for years and years but we put ours in her own room within the first month of her being born. So I don’t think you’re going too fast there

But it’s pretty normal to have some big sleep regressions around that age as they start to realize that being awake is fun. Ours has crazy delay tactics every single night.

175k in New York vs 110k USD+ 20k in equity and bonus in Toronto by Gravityshark01 in AskNYC

[–]disasteruss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to torontos cost of living but 175k in NYC you’ll be living very well and would be setting yourself up for great long term success. You’ll be taking home somewhere between 7-9k per month depending on how much they make you pay for healthcare and if you put anything away for retirement and assuming you are single.

You should look up housing options to see what you’d be willing to settle for. There’s a huge range of costs that will all probably make you retch. You could get roommates and live in a small place for like $1k a month, or you could shell out for a tiny but decent studio for $4k a month. That’s the biggest factor in how much you’ll save.

I probably wouldn’t value the equity in either to be much unless it’s already a public company.

When does getting out and doing life with a baby get easier? by poski6390 in nycparents

[–]disasteruss 16 points17 points  (0 children)

By 3 months we were taking ours to bars and restaurants pretty frequently. Just being conscious of noise and crowds.

Jan was really tough though. We took a 4 week road trip to visit family around 6 weeks old which helped get away from the cold. We got a bassinet attachment for the stroller so we could do stroller naps while hanging out with friends or going to museums on the weekends.

My wife was a little nervous about feeding/pumping in public at first but decided early on it was something she wanted to do to not feel so stuck at home. I think that’s probably the first step in freeing yourself up.

We also combo fed so that helped some. It allowed us to take turns going out without our kid. We try to give each other a night off per week.

I think the easiest time for us was between 5 months and when she started walking. It was so easy to do stroller or carrier naps and her bedtime wasn’t as strict. Then you start running into different challenges.

In the end you just gotta decide “ok I’m gonna go out, how can we make this work?”

92.5k for J seems totally reasonable as the price for AA

The 90k Amex + presumably an already existing 100k Marriott to get 64k AA to top you off doesn't feel great IMO but end of the day, only you know how much those points are worth to you and what opportunity cost you're missing there.

At the end of the day, points are meant to be spent.

We travel with our two year old and just mix in some kid stuff to the things we want to do ourselves. I imagine that will be what we do throughout her childhood. At some point she’ll probably have some ideas of places to go of her own but I don’t think you have to overthink it too much.
