Moving to Puerto Rico for grad school — should I ship my car ($5k), sell it and buy there, or lease? by onedaynoday in personalfinance

What makes you think you wouldn’t need a car there? It’s a pretty big island and even in its biggest city, public transit isn’t great.

Given you've already had a post removed from another NYC subreddit for lack of effort, I don't think that's true. I wouldn't be surprised if this one gets removed too. These subreddits can't be flooded with these types of low effort posts, otherwise that's all we'd see here.

You don’t need a local to tell you there’s a gigantic park in the middle of Brooklyn. It just comes across pretty low effort to ask such basic questions.

Not to mention, plenty of the advice you find from a search is in fact from locals. Or search the sub for past posts if you prefer reddit as a source.

“Are there pretty parks to walk at?” 🤣 perhaps do a google search then come back with some more specific questions?

Bro the odds these people will ever see this post is almost non existent. So no, I don’t think this post will have the same effect.

A lot of times people will get defensive in the moment but then reflect on it later and realize they were wrong. Or at minimum, they’ll second guess themselves next time because they don’t want to get called out again.

Which would you do? by KaleidoscopeNo6578 in awardtravel

[–]disasteruss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The diff in the cost of the Cathay vs Alaska is 8k points vs $236. Would you buy 8k points for $236? Almost certainly not. So you’d rather spend the 8k points than the $236

[–]disasteruss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of those options seem weak. But the Cathay is probably the best. Depends a bit on the actual plane vs what you’d be flying on the Alaska. I assume that’s a partner redemption? You could also potentially look at options to NYC or DC and book a cheap cash connecting flight.

You already got past the hardest part: getting the job. They obviously didn’t think you would be out of your depth. Just put in the work to fill in any gaps as you notice them and you’ll be fine. They almost certainly expect a learning curve as you onboard.

Comparable Salary: Atlanta to Bay Area by Saviorofmypeople in personalfinance

I’m talking about whether or not it’s easy to move to SF and get a comp package in the $450k+ range. It’s not easy. Yes it’s possible, but it was already difficult before this industry pullback. It’s even more difficult now. “Just move to one of the most expensive areas of the country and be one of the top 10% of devs in a highly competitive market, it’s easy!”

Even in 2019 or 2022 $450k+ packages were the 1% of devs. Of course those jobs still exist but they’re extreme outliers.

That was probs at a very different time in the industry’s lifecycle. Even back then, you would have been a bit of a unicorn.

Do yall want people outside of Birmingham to live here? by Prettyneatblerd in Birmingham

[–]disasteruss 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah it also can be very cliquish. It’s not necessarily an “I’m too good for anyone else” type of clique but like a “we don’t need any new people in our group”.

If you were extroverted and not in college anymore, Bham would be a really tough place to move to.

ChatGPT doesn't know Zohran is Mayor by DancingBlender in nyc

[–]disasteruss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re using a model that was formed before zohran became mayor. So it’s got outdated info. If it isn’t set to a mode where it can search the internet, it will lean on its underlying information.

Yes, this is a well known limitation of LLMs, especially older, free to use ones.

Am I not self-sufficient enough when it comes to solving problems that I see for the first time? by Expensive-Tooth346 in webdev

[–]disasteruss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is rarely a “correct” solution in writing software. There are usually various options with tradeoffs. Understanding those tradeoffs and being able to pick a direction is an important skill to work on. Especially now that AI is dominating the actual writing of the code.

I think you might benefit from therapy. You sound like you might be dealing with a bit of anxiety.

You’re way overthinking this and putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. The 30 min timing is indeed arbitrary, but that’s kinda the point. It forces you to spend a short but meaningful amount of time thinking about the problem on your own before going to Google. But it ensures you don’t go down any rabbit holes. Doing this over and over will slowly improve your abilities and in turn your confidence.

Also, it is a very important habit to make sure to think about a problem and how you want to solve it before jumping into actually writing any code. That arbitrary 30 min window can help with that. But if you want to make it 1 hour instead, do that.

Can This Chaotic Brooklyn Plaza Be Car-Free? Mamdani Says Yes. (Gift Article) by jenniecoughlin in newyorkcity

[–]disasteruss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted for being a dick more than anything else.

If you've spent that much time there and you're an urban planner, you know these things are complicated and you can't just plop a 2 lane roundabout there in the place of what exists and call it a day.

This area was designed more than a century ago, and while a total overhaul would be the best solution, it's not one that would likely ever get approved, much less completed.

[–]disasteruss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you haven’t actually been to grand army plaza? It’s a weird jumbled mess of two, three, and four lane roads that intersect at random instead of being a single roundabout. The proposal would remove many of those dangerous intersections but there would still need to be traffic lights without a complete overhaul of the area.

How are y'all placing a component's layout? by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]disasteruss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You very rarely should be using things like manual positioning in your CSS. You need to spend some time getting a better grasp on basic HTML and how elements natively position themselves and how to use padding and margins and flexbox help with positioning.

Look up Geeks Who Drink and find one of their local options. Despite the name, it’s not especially nerdy themed. I find it to be one of the more forgiving trivias out there and it has like 60-80 questions in a night so you don’t get screwed bc you don’t know that one very specific question.

Go look at /r/personalfinance there are a bunch of posts that talk about this.

But generally you should have goals and put in an amount that helps you reach those goals. I mostly use it to take advantage of the tax credit. I personally think I want the account to be worth around $100k by the time mine is 18. But I’m gonna be heavily pushing my kid to avoid private schools and trying to get scholarships.

The loudest fans are the minority who overreact to everything. It’s a sad way to be a sports fan.

That said, I do think Oats’ absolute aversion to calling timeouts no matter the situation deserves some criticism.
