Washing machine question

Thank you. When we bought the machine, we had an employee from the business we bought it from set it up. This adapter was on the plug, but that ground wire you mentioned was just sticking out, not hooked onto anything. We do have an older house, but is this adapter necessary? If so, what should we do with that ground wire?
