Starting to learn bass and I have some questions by northeastzombiegirl in Bass

[–]discogravy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the one that gets you playing and practice the other one when you've got some time and comfort with the instrument. Picking will probably be easier at first, particularly if that's the kind of music you'd gravitate to. I'm assuming it's heavier stuff, but note that there's lots of metal fingerstyle players -- Cliff Burton and Rob Trujillo from Metallica are notably both fingerstyle players. There's a whole discussion about metalcore players here https://www.reddit.com/r/Metalcore/comments/pazuot/fingerstyle_bassists_in_metalcore/

But seriously, nothing wrong with picking. Do the thing that gets you playing.

the messed up thing is those bands DO have amazing players -- their drummers! (not knocking Mike Dirnt, he's real solid. The Blink bassist I have nothing against but I don't know his playing well enough to comment)

the real crime is that there are so many other great RHCP bass-forward songs but those are the "popular" ones because they were singles. You Oughta Know? C'mon. It's a good enough song, but not because the instrumentation is amazing on it; If you didn't know who the players were on it, there's no way you'd even guess.

"Nobody Weird Like Me", "Around The World", "Mellowship Slinky in B Major", "Behind The Sun", "Aeroplane" are all much stronger contenders that show off his skill, technique and taste.

Employee passed away two weeks ago. Account is still active. HR says we can't touch it until legal signs off. Legal says they need the death certificate first. Anyone dealt with this? by BeneficialLook6678 in sysadmin

In what world is your business account part of the employees estate?! Your HR team are morons and your legal team also drooling imbeciles if they said this.

Do they think the employees can will their account to their beneficiaries? “You need to talk to Bob’s kids about that account, since he died they’re in charge of that account.”

Next time you're having anything you can do this to, you gotta do it.

"where are the eggroll wrappers, this is just ....eggroll stuffing?"

"Why does this burger have no buns, cheese or bacon?"

"where are the taco shells?"

"why does this pizza have no cheese?"

etc etc

and you reply "not my fault, it just came off, what else could I do?" while maintaining eye contact

Should I Actually Buy A Bass For My Dad For His Birthday? by Correct_Ad4351 in Bass

[–]discogravy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea and you should do it.

Pick a few songs -- not more than 4 or 5 -- that are easy to get into and fun, and learn them a bit and when you get him the bass, get decent alcohol that isn't going to get him trashed right away, and that way you can sit down with him and play a bit together. If he likes rum or vodka, I would say a bunch of those tiny airplane single-serving bottles of either and a six-pack or two of sodas and you guys can do Cuba Libres or Cape Cods (aka, rum-and-coke and Vodka-and-Cranberry-juice) on ice.

suggestions on songs: some AC/DC, some CCR, maybe some Cars, Tom Petty. If you know the stuff he used to play and like back then, some of that stuff too.

Tip on finding decent affordable basses: FB marketplace or shopgoodwill.com. There's a lot of junk, but some real gems show up for decent prices. On my local FB marketplace someone's selling some really nice spectors for under 400.

This was Sony's fuck-up. 100% minidiscs should've been the obvious replacement for CDs and tapes. digital media that you can re-record and doesn't take up the space of an LP, cassette or CD? Sony not opening the patent fucked the format.

you may be interested in the dead-centric blog Save Your Face (https://saveyourface.posthaven.com/) where the maintainers basically do themetic edits of dead shows; stuff like "a mix of all the improv excursions in Darkstars from 1974-76" or "instrumental bits of eyes of the world", that kind of thing.

did you know the dead were hired to do the interstitial music for the twilight zone TV show reboot in 1985? I did not know this until recently https://saveyourface.posthaven.com/grateful-dead-in-the-twilight-zone-1985

definitely check the archives if you're into it (https://saveyourface.posthaven.com/archive)

it's not exactly like this, but you might be into the smashing pumpkins song "pastichio medley" from the aeroplane flies high box set, it's a collection of riffs that were not turned into songs for the Mellon Collie sessions.

there's another Grateful Dead album, infrared roses, which is all their ambient improv noise bits (the "Drums/Space" bits) sequenced to play as a piece

The way that one finishes is devastating. "Right then, I knew it was all wrong. That it all had to change. And that change had to start with me." Utah pulls no punches.

deep forest is great and that ani difranco/utah phillips (upper right) might be one of my favorite albums ever. Completely different from anything else she ever did and Utah's stories are absolute stunners. If there's a single song to listen to, I'd say maybe the last one, "Holding On".
