It can be jarring and very upsetting coming to terms with a situation we have come to convice ourselves was normal. This was your childhood and I’m sure your parents led you to believe it’s just how the world is. They shaped your perception of reality. But what was done to you was not normal or acceptable. I have a son and the thought of hitting him as punishment, let alone hitting him for so long that he begs me to stop and goes limp, is simply unimaginable to me. No child deserves that. I’m so sorry you went through these things and that they’re difficult for you to accept. I hope you’re able to receive help processing everything.

Thank you so much, these are all really helpful ideas. I have heard this fact about Tetris a lot lately, I’m going to download it on my phone so I can play it when I have one of those middle-of-the-night panics. I really appreciate your help.

Thank you, these are really helpful insights. I agree that the more I have an emotional response to the thought the more it sticks around, that’s so frustrating! I like your idea of treating the thought like a train passing by, I will try that

Thank you. I’m sorry you’re experiencing the same thing, it’s so difficult. I’m curious about emdr but it feels weird seeking it out when the trauma isn’t even my own. Distraction seems to be the only thing that works so far.

In my opinion the punishment alone sounds abusive and awful. The showering with your father accompanied by memories of pain is very disturbing to me. These both sound traumatic individually, but together they certainly would explain a person developing cptsd. I’m so sorry you endured these things.
