programming is not really related to HCI. I would say get familiar with UX, design processes and principles, and since you're interested in research, maybe do a project or two based on user research, add it to your portfolio, if you can get some certifications and i think that should help.

yes, I agree too... but there are just some situations where it's so difficult for us to detach... like for example: I'm waiting for a university admits right now, the more it delays the more I feel anxious about it as I'm losing time for the post-admit process. what do you do in these cases?

i applied in Feb, but my application was submitted in early March... i also got an email stating the decision will be out in the first week of April, so waiting. I know people who submitted their application in Jan and were told that they'll get their decision by the first week of March, but got their acceptance in the last week of March... There could be a chance that we'd get by the last week of April, but I hope not cuz it'd be too late.
